First Multicam and now this. Why does it have to be like this?
People fixate on ARs and ignore the SCAR clones building steam; obviously there's the Bren but the japs have one now too; plus as a third option the chinks now have a 416 knockoff in their own weird calibre. Just as multicam has its distinct sub variants (brit, spanish, australian) and countries that entirely ignore it, there will be a decent number of armies using SCARs and 416s instead
So aren't those all effectively AR-18s?

It's a tube that goes boom with bits of the tube you can hang gear off of and all of the controlly bits next to the boom switch so you don't gotta move your hand much. By the time we get something much different it'll either be because of some leap in technology that renders firearm ergonomics as we know them moot or because people just really get bored of shooting each other with ar-15 lookalikes.

One thing I don't get is why so many countries are going for piston AR-15s instead of AR-18-derived rifles. I thought the only benefit of a piston AR-15 is that it involves less retraining if your previous service rifle was already an AR-15. For everyone else, shit like SCARs and Brens sound more logical to me

Light, 5.56 is a very flat shooter, good penetration, wound channels massive internal damage, can easily carry 8 spare 30rnd mags, insane range of aftermarket parts making it highly versatile. I mean human anatomy isn't changing any time soon. What could even be improved, not necessarily about the AR but what would a theoretical "better rifle" even have that the AR doesn't have or can be modified to have?
