Is this better than the FAL?

Nah. Better ergos and more controllable but the FAL kind of shits on it in every other metric.

FAL is easier to load, has a much better selector, is easier to field strip, arguably a better charging handle and a more durable front sight. The M14 accurizes better and has a much better rear sight. Overall I prefer my M1A to my FALs.

In 2026? Yes.

For me, yes.

I would say no, overall. It was a decent rifle but as a select fire automatic rifle (adaptation of Garand) Beretta's BM 59 is better.

as this anon >>65477040 said, the M14 is probably a better semiauto rifle for DMR/sniper use along the lines of the M21, M25

If you have to "re-bed" your rifle to make it accurate again after taking it out of it's furniture and even go as far as glass bedding, it is just not even a contest. C stock upper and lower receiver combo is just unmatched. Even if otherwise it is a great rifle and wins in other aspects. Also the action reciprocates which is just a big no in modern battle rifles. I think this is seriously an understated flaw of many rifles including the AK.

Just look at Forgotten Weapons Ian at Finnish Brutality this year. Short stoking a high end AK on a barrier he is using to stabilise off and not even realising that he is doing it. in the heat of combat and even in gay larp competition it is imperative that stick go boom no matter what its pushed up against.
>>
>>65477260
I thought the issue he had was poor magazines
>>
>>65476982
It's better than the FAL it was in trials with.
>>
>>65477260
I think the rebedding after disassembly is neo fuddlore. I've removed my national match from its stock for cleaning, put it in an EBR chassis, and then back into its original stock and it still groups roughly 1MOA.
>>
>>65477275
This also, it is the reason he did not realise he was short stroking it against a barrier in one stage since he just thought it was the mas fault.

You would know this if you had an attention span. (Subscribe to Weapons of War)

>>65477291
The national match already has glass bedding from the factory. That is why you are not having issues.

The Army preferred the FAL and was on the verge of adopting it until it shat the bed in the 53 Winter trials. Then domestic production FALs began suffering manufacturing difficulties and by the time a choice was to be made the proto-M14 had surpassed it. >Why is the m14 touted as a boomer weapon? Boomers were just reaching adulthood when the m14 was filtered out for the m16, its the silent generation clinging to the m1 garand

Boomers were sent to Vietnam with the M14 briefly before being handed an M16. The military completely mismanaged the M16 and as a result it became permanently enshrined in Fuddlore that the M16 was an unreliable hunk of junk with no stopping power that was guaranteed to jam on you and that it only replaced the perfect in every way M14 because of military-industrial complex corruption. Then Ruger came out with the Mini-14 in 1974. The survivalist types in the 1970s and 80s viewed the Mini-14 as basically perfect: It was a smaller, lighter weight version of the "reliable and accurate" M14 and it was made in America. The only way it could be better was if it was in the "hard hitting 7.62×39 mm" so you could take ammo off of invading Soviet paratroopers. Then the Mini-14 was exempted from the AWB because noguns boomers saw that it had wood furniture and was therefore a hunting rifle. To this day, boomer fudds usually jerk off the M14 & Mini-14 and shit on the AR15/M16. So it's a matter of self association, the M14 is a boomer gun because the boomers were the primary user and they embraced it.
>>
>>65478528
Sullivan is the only reason the AR-15 wasn't dogshit. Imagine being such a terrible rifle your main adopter replaced it in less than 5 years and the nation that produces it would rather buy foreign made rifles instead. Either both the Portuguese and Dutch were getting paid off by big BoOrd or maybe the AR-10 sucked
>>
>>65478568
They used it general issue for 15 years, kept using it in their "elite paratroopers" even afterward by cannibalizing general issue parts, and the only reason it left general issue was due to political fuckery / embargo from Holland.

Is there any particular good dive into the characteristics of the M14 design in the abstract?
Some ppl say it was just sloppy build quality.
Others say no, it was inherently heavy for some reason and won't be saved by build quality (why?).
I saw full auto demos, and I get without help needed why that was a dumb feature without a bipod.
>>
>>65478591
The G3 would've been the best choice but it showed up way too late to have been a serious contender. But if you want NATO integration the G3 had more adopters in the far more relevant ground forces (let's be real, Germany, Greece, and Turkey would've taken the brunt of a Soviet offensive while England fucks off to their island again)
>>
>>65478563
Oh and I forgot to add, this is a gr8 poast.
I look forward to oncoming generations approaching these designs without the baggage, and maybe giving a more fair appraisal.

>>65476982
No. The FAL is better, especially today when you consider all the modern upgrades to both rifles. The biggest design flaw of the FAL is the terrible iron sights, which gave it a reputation for poor accuracy. The front sight is attached to the barrel/receiver while the rear sight is attached to the lower trigger housing. This was a recipe for disaster, but is thankfully mitigated by modern optical sights which also solved the problem of rifle barrels needed to be absurdly long to increase sight radius (ironically this didn't even matter for the FAL because the front sight block is integrated with the gas block). The FAL was much more forward-thinking and innovative compared to the M14 which was already obsolete from the moment it was adopted.
>>65478445
The M14 got adopted because unlike the FAL it has a conventional full-length rifle stock which is better for drill exhibitions (that gay rifle spinning shit they do in ROTC) that make mouth-breathing milfags cream their pants.
>>
>>65476982
It can be made into a way more accurate gun, bug the FAL is more reliable and more durable.
>>
>>65477024
OOOHHHH shit!
>>
>>65478681
>modern optical sights
Which the FAL sucks at mounting. It's the same problem as AK dust cover mounts but FALfags are too delusional to recognize that. The M14 isn't much better but at least there's a way to solidly mount it. Of course the G3 kicks both their teeth in because you're not beating a rail directly welded to the receiver in terms of stability
>>
>>65478769
The FAL is never going to be a precision rifle but the DSA dust cover mount is good enough for 1-4x or 1-6x combat style optics.
>>
>>65478769
In a military context where you don't mind permanently modifying the guns I see no problem with adding a receiver bridge to the rear part of the upper (going over the sheetmetal dustcover) with like 2-3 inches of pic rail. Enough for any red dot, 4x prism sight, or compact NVD like PVS-14. A compact thermal sight would fit too. The fact that nobody did that has probably more to do with the guns being really old/too expensive to make new/already replaced by other stuff in every military that might want to actually do such modification.
>>
>>65478591
mediocre or on par with war production standards of the time?

Nobody seems to have a legit rant.

>>65478681

And then comes the fan boys who cry about the overlooking the FAL like it's sub MOA and rabid.

Most people in the military never watch drill videos of any kind. By the way.

"My FAL" maybe you are the milfag you describe.

My estimate of the situation

The M-14 is a Vietnam relic. It uses heavy ass 20 round mags that only a bench shooter, safe queen could love.

30 cal rifles went out of style in combat arms and then made a comeback in mountain open field warfare. Thus the EBR-14, and (you) fanboys with tears in your eyes saying its not that good.

Truth be told you're better off researching long range shooting YT channels like Texas Plinking, and building yourself up a budget rifle that is rated sub MOA with a nice big scope.

The FAL, M-14 are for fun. I'd love to have a EBR-14 with a scope and a can on it, but why spend 2000$ when it's meant for at most 500 yards? Other than true C&R purposes.

Military rifles have got better but how often are you going to practice beyond 500 yards? You'll be lucky to get proficient with one gun if you're a serious shooter.

AI Overview The FN FAL battle rifle typically delivers an accuracy of 2 to 4 MOA

The standard military M14 rifle had a service-acceptable accuracy requirement of about 5.6 to 6 MOA

Or you can get this for 900$ and be more credible

No, it doesn't. Stop lying on the internet.
>>
>>65478815
Same can be said of all the AK railed dust covers too but it's universally accepted that those are unacceptably loose mounts. FAL doesn't get a pass because it wobbles a wee bit less, it's still a bad solution
>>65478816
That would connect it to the rear sight, no? You'd prevent the gun from being opened for cleaning. I think if you want to solid mount a scope to the FAL you'd need to permanently affix the dust cover to the front and sides as that won't mess with the opening mechanism. That or just make it all one solid piece like an AR upper instead of having the dust cover be a separate removable part
>>
>>65479067
The FAL dust cover mount from DSA uses ten screws to keep the thing in place. It's fine. Modern Western manufacturing is a lot better at precision machining than poorfag commie manufacturing that's used to make regular AKs with loose tolerances. Even the IWI Galil ACE dust cover mount is fine for things like red dots and LPVOs.

From personal experience I like the G3 more. From an acquisitions perspective it's the most cost effective option, being possibly the cheapest option available. From a logistics perspective you have parts commonality with Swedish, German, Greek, Turkish, Spanish, and Portuguese equipment (and that's just limiting yourself to NATO and NATO-aligned operators). From a soldier's perspective they're much more reliable than either the FAL or M14 with excellent sights, possibly the best but that's up for debate. And from an upgrade perspective it's dead simple to make it compatible with optics and give it a modern, solid handguard for mounting accessories. Really the main limiting factor is lack of LRBHO which is honestly not the end of the world, but seeing as the MP5/10 was able to add the feature I'm positive it could be done to the G3 if such a change was truly necessary. Another, more minor limitation is that it mangles brass, which from what I understand the military does collect and reload brass to save on training ammo costs. But also it's the US fucking military, we can just buy more ammo, it's not that big of a deal
>>
>>65478169
I was giving an explanation for why boomers like it so much.

It's the only one of the 3 that's still in limited frontline service (by non-shithole nations).
And no, modernized M14 variants don't count. Rifles that got re-engineered from scratch in billion-dollar GWAT development programs, only to be imminently retired for being worse than expected don't count as cold war battle rifles.
>>
>>65479173
The G3 is not good. The rifle can be bricked by whacking the buttstock against something and bending the stamped sheet metal receiver out of shape. It also has the most ridiculous manual of arms and reloading process of any modern rifle. It gets credit for being very mechanically accurate but that's really its only strong suit.

Unironically a major factor in service rifles, since half the people using them will be bellow average intelligence.
If you'd ever served in the military, or worked a blue-collar job, you'd know that tools being rugged, simple, and easy to maintain is mission critical.
Handing advanced, fancy, and fragile high tech shit to your average grunt amounts to nothing more than an experiment to see how fast he and his retarded friends can break it, lose it, or "lose it" to sell for beer money at the local pawn shop.

>>
>>65479215
I know but it's just funny because it's the same logic people use when they say women should buy revolvers instead of modern autoloading pistols. Women are grunts are apparently too unga-bunga to understand guns.
>>
>>65479210
>G3's bolt and bolt carrier assembly are such a pain in the ass to disassemble and reassemble that they make special tools for it.
Never seen those. Never needed 'em.
But I will admit, it can be a pain in the ass to get the roller and stiff springs where they're supposed to go when it's pitch black outside, you aren't allowed to light fire or use flashlights, your hands are freezing numb and coated in oil.

That being said, just squirting some oil on the bolt assembly and wiping/brushing it off is more than enough in the vast majority of usage cases.
The G3 shits where it eats, but it keeps on running regardless. As long as you don't pack sand and mud into the action, it'll run with thick layers of soot and powder residue everywhere.
One positive feature of the G3 is that the lack of a gas system means there are no rock-hard carbon deposits to scrape off, and no gas system parts to keep clean and keep track of.
It doesn't have the exposed op-rod and camming grove of the M14. And it doesn't have the failure-prone locking lug recess of the FAL that'll prevent the bolt from locking into battery if a stray atom of dirt touches it.
>>
>>65479209

>It doesn't have the exposed op-rod and camming grove of the M14. And it doesn't have the failure-prone locking lug recess of the FAL that'll prevent the bolt from locking into battery if a stray atom of dirt touches it.
It still has a huge fucking slot in the receiver for easily letting in sand and grit, which is infamous for locking the gun the fuck up by the words of people who used them in Middle Eastern environments.
>>
>>65479228
>Women are grunts are apparently too unga-bunga to understand guns.
They used to say revolvers were ideal police service weapons for similar reasons. With age an experience, I'm slowly growing increasingly convinced that they had a valid point.

In high-stress situations, 99% people revert to unga-bunga lizard-brain mode.
If they aren't dedicated and well practiced, they're liable to fuck up in such situations.
In unexpected life&death situations such fuck-ups could very well cost them their lives.
I'd like to clarify that I'm not some kind of boomer misogynist that thinks women are all dumb, and thus incapable of understanding modern autoloaders.
But if any given person is unlikely to practice regularly and git-guud™ with their weapon of choice, to the point where operating correctly becomes instinct, it's unironically best to provide them with the simplest possible most retard-proof point&squeeze option possible, to minimize potential fuck-up situations.
>>

The M14, FAL, and G3 all have their high and low points.

An in-depth (though dated) comparison is in the book Boston's Gun Bible. He goes into detail about each one.

The question you asked is affected by use. Is it for a civilian or for mass issue to soldiers? Are these going to be scoped or left with iron sights? Historically or for actual use in 2026? Etc.

The M14 has the best sights and trigger. The FAL is probably the most ergonomic. The G3 is the most modular, probably the easiest to mount a scope on, and is said to be the toughest under hard use.

Extremely obscure reference; The first time that the Swedish military bought a batch of Kar98Ks from Nazi-Germany back in 1939/1940, the senior officer in charge of quality control for the Carl Gustaf rifle factory was suspicious of the weird new laminated stocks the krauts put on their rifles. He personally decided to test how good laminate stocks were by just grabbing one of the brand new freshly imported rifles by the barrel and repeatedly bashing it as hard as he could against an anvil. The stock got dented by it didn't break, and the rifle remained functional. The quality control inspector was impressed. Thus German Kar98Ks rifles, laminated wood stocks in general, were formally declared fit for military service in accordance to the strict quality control requirements enforced in the kingdom of Sweden.

That's the closest historical "trial" I know of specifically testing rifles bashed against hard objects.

Annoyingly the DTIC website is currently down for maintaince and every page that talks about this report doesn't bother rehosting it, but yes these were combat trials, with excerpt being:
>The Combat Evaluation (Annex “A”) shows that all US Advisors and Vietnamese Commanders who participated in the evaluation prefer the AR-15 to any other weapon with which the RVNAF are now armed. The lethality of the AR-15 and its reliability record were particularly impressive. All confirmed casualties inflicted by the AR-15. including extremity hits, were fatal (see photographs 7 and 8, Annex “D”).
>On 13 April, 62, a Special Forces team made a raid on a small village. In the raid, seven VC were killed. Two were killed by AR-15 fire. Range was 50 meters. One man was hit in the head; it looked like it exploded. A second man was hit in the chest; his back was one big hole.
>On 160900 June 62, one platoon from the 340 Ranger Company was on an operation vic. YT260750 and contacted 3 armed VC in heavily forested jungle. Two VC had carbines, grenades, mines, and one had a SMG. At a distance of approximately 15 meters, one Ranger fired an AR-15 full automatic hitting one VC with 3 rounds with the first burst. One round in the head-took it completely off. Another in the right arm, took it completely off, too. One round hit him in the right side, causing a hole about five inches in diameter. It cannot be determined which round killed the VC but it can be assumed that any one of the three would have caused death. The other 2 VC ran, leaving the dead VC with I carbine, 1 grenade and 2 mines.

ok thanks

I've lost count of how many cops I've seen accidentally hit the catch and drop their magazine under stress. I'm starting to think maybe the Euros had the right idea with heel releases on police handguns.

Non-zero chance he's just such a good shot he makes up for his rifle. Or his rifle really likes him and tries her best. Or she's accurized from þe factory, because she's not a surplus rifle, and actually is þat accurate.

I just like it. It's a 5 digit national match, and yeah it with 175gr match ammo is what I get groups like this with. I don't shoot from a bench, only using my ruck as a rest or the bipod when I till had it in the chassis. That's all to say I think the rifle is more accurate than I am.

Who the fuck would even use the wording "reddit spacing" except for a faggot that hangs out there like yourself. Fags can't stop thinking about sucking cock, and fags can't stop thinking about their reddit posts, just like your faggot ass self

Bitch everything mentioned was about shit that got brought up here in this thread and the bolt gun is a relevant suggestion.

(You) are in fact a sckizo shit posting faggot with mumbling nigger pictures saved onto your own personal PC. Congratulations on your being such a MASSVE FAGGOT little bitch ass faggot

I was gonna doubt you, because I though Germany only first began doing laminate wood on the 1943 Kriegsmodell variant, but apparently they began doing it around 1940 at the earliest, so maybe we did in fact get some rifles with such stocks.
I'd bet that it'd pass his test though, properly done laminate wood is very hard and rugged stuff.
>>
>>65480614
The laminate does fail though, and it's why I sadly sold my G43. The stock was just falling apart.

I still miss that rifle.
>>
>>65480619
That's not what I've seen.
>>
>>65480628
It happens, and it fucking sucks.
One of the handful of people I know who has a legit VG-1 had the same issue.
That being said I was a recent collector and what I was told was that my rifle was in a hot , dry climate for a long time (made sense, as I bought it at a SAR show in Phoenix).
I saw the same thing happening with buttstocks and other parts as people actually used these guns. Most of the shoots seem to be in the southwest, and I noticed degradition with a few Mp44's and a couple Mg42's.

>You'd prevent the gun from being opened for cleaning.
Nope, I was talking about something akin to the charger bridge on Lee Enfields, see picrel. And the sheetmetal dustcover could still be slided out for easy access for cleaning (one of the things I really like about FAL). If more finnicky cleaning isn't an issue, the DSA railed dustcover works, as >>65479079 said.
>>
>>65479865
Even comes with an invisible magazine
>>
>>65480628
It also depends on the type of glue used in manufacture. IIRC Germans used a phenolic resin glue to make aviation plywood and laminated rifle stocks but from some point in the war the supply of it got cut or seriously reduced, and not all replacement glues used afterwards were up to the task.
>>
>>65476982
No. In fact, it is shittier in every way.
>Exposed rotating bolt carrier group makes it much more prone to getting gunked up in inclimate climates, or having malfunctions while raining if oiled rather than greased.
>Clunky way of inserting mags is awkward even for those experienced with the platform in a serious firefight
>Accuracy is just simply not amazing at longer distances, even when bedding the action
>Does not come with an adjustable gas block, so when your rifle eventually shits its pants in muddy or sandy climates, there's no way of adjusting your gas to mitigate this without buying after market accessories
>Dated ergonomics that feel more akin to a hunting rifle and were outdated even by the 1950s when it was first fielded.
Need I continue?
>>
>>65480876
I could definitely see that being the case, a lower quality substitute from later in the war.

>>65480876

"Red" glue was the strong stuff, "white" glue was weaker and used only short term.
Obviously it's pretty easy to tell which you have by looking at it

G3 is literally unusable unless you're literally an octopus with fucking tentacles for fingers. The fire selector is one foot away from the pistol grip and whoever designed it should've never escaped the aquarium. First time I held one I was blown away by how a gun could get past the fucking drawing board with such retarded unusable controls.
>>
>>65479067
>Same can be said of all the AK railed dust covers too but it's universally accepted that those are unacceptably loose mounts. FAL doesn't get a pass because it wobbles a wee bit less, it's still a bad solution
FAL picatinny covers don't wobble at all. It's only visually similar to how the AK cover is mounted but the mounting method is different

Kek there are hundreds upon hundreds of vids of pajeets doing exactly that. Cope and seethe and poo in the loo gupta
>>
>>65484542
It wasn't even that they abandoned it, it's that the proto-M14 that they had previously recommended be canned ended up doing better than the FAL in the cold so they couldn't justify disqualifying it. Over the next couple years the low-rate production proto-M14s would simply outperform the domestically produced FALs
>>
>>65483727
Is the concept of repeatably breaking your firing stance really that inconceivable to you?
>>
>>65483727
>>65484544
Oh boo hoo, the trigger finger has to be away from the trigger when disengaging the safety. Surely this fraction of a second difference will mean the end of me in a firefight compared to the FAL switch. Frankly all safeties which aren't the old fashioned bit of metal in the trigger guard you push forward to disengage are shit in terms of speed and ergonomics, which would mean the M14 has the most ergonomic safety
>>
>>65478591
Ngl I take the Galil out of all these options
>>
>>65486836
the galil doesn't really fit in that picture.

the other rifles are all proper 7.62x51, early cold war battle rifles while the galil in that caliber didn't come around til the 80s. by then everyone was going 5.56 and that big boy galil was used as a dmr sorta thing.
>>
>>65478591
>tried to sneak the galil in there
>>
>>65480614
Mauser Oberndorf started using laminate stocks in late 1937 in K98k production and spent a good portion of 1936 experimenting with laminate stocks to replace the walnut that they were using. Other manufacturers were using laminate by 1938.
>>65480876
>>65481587
White glue was weaker and didn't react well with people bleaching and cleaning stocks. It can still work just fine considering white glue was first implemented in 1943 and still considered suitable for service up until the end but didn't hold up to time and temperature variations as well as the red glue.
>>
>>65486850
So the SCAR-L and really any 7.62 caliber infantry rifle developed after the 1960s doesn't count as a battle rifle?
>>
>>65486899
Fuck the Scar-H, fuck my nico nico life
>>
>>65486899
not what i said. and a SCAR-L is absolutely not a battle rifle. you could argue that a SCAR-H is though.
>>
The H.C.A.R. is a battle rifle.
>>
>>65486899
the galil doesn't belong because it came 20 -30 years after everything else. not really comparing apples to apples. switch it out for the SCAR-H and it still doesn't belong in that picture.
>>
>>65486944
sure! just not a super good one
>>
>>65486956
Thurtee AWED stix powah.
>>
>>65486948
The pic is labeled "Cold War Western Counties Battle Rifles". 308 galil definitely fits the role of a BR, came out before the fall of the union, and- despite Jewish chicanery- from a western aligned country. It checks all the boxes even if it fails the vibe check. Unless you also think the Howa Type 64 would be out of place too and you want to restrict it to strictly NATO battle rifles, which would be fair
>>
>>65486956
It looks sick as fuck though. If I had a few thousand to just piss away on a range toy I’d 100% buy one.
>>
>>65486850
80s was still Cold War era though. What else is missing from this picture? I know there’s something else. Not the SCAR either.

It's ironic because the AR-10 also shit the bed in cold weather testing iirc and the AR-15 ended up replacing the M14.

It could easily have passed that. Problem is (with all the field testing not just cold weather) 1957 ArmaLite was not a thorough contractor, engineering-wise.
