This is a weapons (/k/) thread, not a politics (/pol/) thread. This thread is for discussing weapons used in the American Civil War from 1861-1865, it is not for discussing the politics behind the war, slavery, morality, rights, so on.

With that out of the way, feel free to talk about anything from cannons to bayonets!

Would you prefer spring locks for your barrel bands, or screws? I'd personally think screws are the better option but Hickok45 (Officially approved /k/ e-celeb) who has personally fired both the M1861 and the P53 describes the screw locked bands as jumpy and loose, this could of course be attributed to the quality of production (and it's over 160 years old), but without firing one myself it's hard to tell.

Probably wouldve seen a lot more of them around just from no longer being flintlocks.
Percussion caps were better and cheaper to make so they probably wouldve just advanced to the 1861 anyway
>>
>>65479364
It would be ideal. The US wasn't too keen on spending money recklessly back then. Having a way to convert 1816 springfields into a theoretical 1842 tubelock would save some money in the long run.

I'm a Europoor who is new to this subjecty so my understanding is rudimentary. I'm aware that the Confederacy was doomed to lose anyway, but could anybody enligthen me what the most major misssteps by them were whose prevention could have decimated the Union Army more ot at least prolong the war?
>>
Lurking fa/tg/uy developing an interest in the period and frankly I'm more likely to get a good answer here than /tg or (god forbid) /his. There's a tendency in games to make a distinction between the Union in the Eastern and Western theatres. Generally an Eastern force has slightly more guns, Western more cavalry. The Confederacy has no such (artificial?) split. Is there any basis to this? Or simply 'fuddlore'? If so, why did the Confederacy not exhibit a similar difference?

Slavery is key to any discussion of weapons in the civil war, one of the major advantages the north enjoyed was its more modern industrialised economy which allowed it to decisively outproduce the slave based economies of the south
Pound for pound I would argue slavery did more harm than good to the southern war effort as a result

But in all seriousness, what do you guys do at reenactments? Obviously the costumes and such are a big part and I’m sure the highlight is being around people as dedicated as you are to your particular niche, but what do you actually do during the reenactments? I know people fire blanks and march but is there more to it? Like, do you recreate the movements of certain battles or do you do mock battles against the opposing side? If so, are those battles predetermined or do you guys roll dice to determine outcomes or something.

The Colt revolving rifle had its defaults. I still would've hated to be on the receiving end
>The 21st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It saw action in some of the war's bloodiest battles including Stones River, Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, and Sherman's March to the Sea.
>During the Tullahoma and Chickamauga campaigns, the eagerness to embrace new repeating technology manifested itself in many units in the army receiving repeating firearms. While some Union units received Spencers and others got Henry rifles, the 21st Ohio opted for the five-shot Colt Revolving Rifles.
>The regiment first found how well their new weapons would perform when during the Battle of Chickamauga. On September 20, the Confederates made their first assault on the 21st O.V.I. around 11 a.m. They continued to attack throughout the morning and afternoon, but each attack was repulsed by a murderous fire from the regiment's five-shot Colt Revolving Rifles. So heavy was the volume of fire that the Confederates were convinced that they were attacking an entire division, not just a single regiment.
Plus I always thought it looked cool
>>
A lot of people don't know that the Gatling wasn't the only nor the irst machine gun of the Civil War
>The Agar gun (or Ager) was an early rapid fire machine gun developed during the US Civil War. The weapon was nicknamed the Coffee Mill Gun, and was also called the Union Repeating Gun.
>In 1861, the hand-cranked machine gun was demonstrated to President Abraham Lincoln, who was very impressed by the weapon.
>Throughout the war, Agar guns were used, though not extensively. In January 1862 the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry were said to have used the Agar Guns in a skirmish by Harpers Ferry. In another skirmish at Middleburg, Virginia, on March 29, 1862, a captain by the name of Bartlett recalled Union soldiers firing an Agar Gun at attacking Confederate cavalry at a distance of 800 yards, inflicting many casualties and causing the Rebels to flee. The "Coffee Mill" gun was also used somewhat by the Union during McClellan's Peninsula campaign in 1862.
>The Union Army was not the only one to have used the "Coffee Mill" guns. In September 1862, Confederates obtained seventeen of the machine guns when they captured Harpers Ferry, and used them sparingly in 1864.

Not necessarily. They could have got Britain on side overtly or otherwise and that would have been a game changer.

>>
>>65505323
Corn was coming from the North, not the South. Also, British cotton weavers basically told the British government "Nah, we'll be fine" in the period between Confederate imports falling off a cliff and Britain finding other sources. They would rather stay home and suffer than deal with slave cotton.
>>

How fucking dare you. Dolly Parton was a National Treasure and a wonderful human being.
>>
>>65505365
I just wonder if maybe if there were still British revanchists or just imperialists hoping to kneecap the US's westward expansion to leave the door open to expand the Canadian territories into the modern American west coast. Cotton wasn't a major concern for England, especially after the value crashed, but I wonder if there could be an ideological impetuous for supporting the south. Sadly I'm not that well versed on Anglo-American diplomatic relations in the 19th century, anyone more well versed in the subject willing to educate me on the topic? Actually now that I'm on the topic, is England ally #1 strictly because of WWII or was there a point in WWI or even earlier where British diplomatic ties significantly strengthened?

>During the War between the States, the U.S. Munitions Depot purchased approximately 165,000 Prussian weapons to equip the rapidly growing Union regiments, more than half of which were these converted Model 1809 muskets. The majority of these weapons saw service in the Western Theater, including significant numbers at Fort Donelson and Vicksburg. Only a small portion of these muskets appear in Confederate hands, likely through capture on the battlefield rather than official imports. Historical records show that a shipment of approximately 51,000 Prussian muskets, delivered by the Liège-based arms dealer Lemaire, reached the Confederacy (Dixieland) by November 1861, representing the only significant documented transfer of these muskets southward.

Sometimes I wonder how the outcome would be different if the Trapdoor Springfield and Snider-Enfield conversions, or even the Martini-Henry had been developed a decade earlier.

I figure either the early engagements would have even more lopsided Confederate victories to the point where the Union is forced to sue for peace, or if the war drags on, it results in an even more catastrophic Confederate defeat as a result of Union industry churning out more advanced single-shot rifles and eventually repeaters in greater numbers.

>>

>result of Union industry churning out more advanced single-shot rifles and eventually repeaters in greater numbers
The standardized Springfield Model 1863 and Remington Model 1863 Zouave were made like the improved Prussian needle-fire rifle and the needle-rammer Greene rifle using interchangeable parts, such as the needle pin and early bolt mechanism.

>either the early engagements would have even more lopsided Confederate victories
The Confederacy might have developed a trapdoor Richmond rifle similar to the Wänzl or Albini breech-loaders if their industrial focus had shifted away from cotton in the 1830s and 1840s, and if they had transitioned from an enslaved labor system to a serfdom-based economy.

I strongly recommend Hardtack and Coffee if anyone wants to know about the day to day life as a soldier in the civil war (and how little as changed really compared to being a soldier now)

For example, there a chapter just on the kinds of punishments that used for enforcing discipline. Such as:

>some would compel them to wear an inverted barrel for several hours, by having a hole cut in the bottom, through which the head passed, making a kind of wooden overcoat;

>I remember on one occasion-the last year of the war-that a large number of Spencer breech-loading rifles, the result of a capture, were turned over to the arsenal, and though greatly desired by the troops, could not be issued for want of ammunition.
>In the effort to make the cartridges for the Spencer rifles, in the first place tools had to be devised, with which to make the tools used for making the cartridges. Hence the surrender of Richmond came before the cartridges were made - Cap. William Leroy Broun, page 371 Confederate Ordnance During the War
The Confederacy would have turned the war into a stalemate as Richmond had not fallen and was being resupplied.

They were an agrarian economy depending on a singular cash crop. The monopoly they had was busted shortly before the war. On top of this they pretty much ignored all Naval problems and put up token resistance in the waves (which also happened to be it's best chance for industrial supplies). On top of this the Confederates by their very nature did not believe in unifying anything so their commands were split and on the home front the ability to raise economic surplus for the war was minimal.

Had they focused on reopening ports they might have been able to hold on longer with extra trade, but by design the North attacked this via the Anaconda plan.

Now we can also get into the lack of monetary policy. The Confederates had only one nationwide script which was paper currency. The North ran multiple counterfeiting operations at industrial scale (most printing presses were in the North), and distributed the notes throughout the South crippling their internal economy.

Finally with 1 in 3 of the population being enslaved they were never able to mass a total wave of men (keeping a large reserve in the South in case of revolt), which crippled their mobility.

At the end of the day they were classically bad in every aspect of prolonged war and the best they could hope for is a North captured by malaise (McClellan era), that made incursions into the South unlikely. If they had that they might have wrangled a working economy (but this assumes the Brits don't use Egypt as a replacement for Southern Cotton which was already in action by the Civil War)

>go to war because you don't want the gubmint to take your slaves
>now the gubmint is taking your slaves
I don't think that'd go over well, on top of the fact that they'd still be playing catch up but with completely untrained and illiterate workers that they would somehow have to keep enslaved while giving them the tools and knowledge to make all their military shit. The problem was not a lack of dudes to do untrained grunt work.

I agree with your points that technically it would improve their chances but in practice if they were able to see the writing on the wall and willing to abandon their current institution of slavery to industrialize and keep up with the times then the war just wouldn't have happened, or would have at least needed to wait for another reason.

The schedule usually runs

>two day event (Saturday, Sunday)
>two 1-hour battles per day around 12 and 3pm
>some events do three battles on Saturday (usually in the early evening around 5pm)
>8am-10am is breakfast hanging around camp
>11am is gun drills
>1pm-2pm is lunch/shaking down members of the public for donations
>2pm-3pm formation
>4pm and afterward hanging around/garrisoning camp (any event that's held in an open space like a park requires at least one person to do sentry duty to make sure members of the public don't come wandering into camp, usually operating in 1-hour rotations) or going back to your hotel, getting dinner, going to bed/jerking off
>wake up and be ready for formation by 9am on Sunday
>after first battle on Sunday, we hold a grand review where all of the regiments from both sides will march past the public together
>break down camp after second battle

This year we couldn't even hold Sunday battles because of the rain.
