There is a modicum of higher cost involved in more stringent QC practices to ensure each round is consistently subsonic. Cheap supers can get away with less consistency, so QC and the reject rate can be lower (this is the same reason match grade .22lr is expensive). However at the end of the day manufacturers know people will pay extra for something that seems like a specialized product. I happen to have a thing for .22s.... I'm a bit of a fan.....
What's the most consistent .22lr for carry in a back up gun? So far I've found it to be federal subs but I'm open to recommendations

But I do have experience with Henry as a company. And if you are going to buy a Henry, inspect it like you would a used firearm. Check for all the things. Make sure nothing is loose. Make sure the trigger isn't garbage. Look down the bore and make sure it doesn't look like the rifling was chewed in by a meth addled beaver (personal experience on that one). If you've shot it for a while and it doesn't seem to be accurate, slug the barrel to measure the bore (mine was only giving about 2 1/2 thou of engagement because the barrel was garbage). In short, as far as I'm concerned, Henry is a gamble these days. They'll replace or repair your firearm if it's garbage, but why go through that?I've never owned a Rossi gun. For such a predominant and ubiquitous caliber, there really is a huge shortcoming in terms of rugged and reliable semi automatic actions used in .22 firearms. >>65486525I didn't mean to glaze Henry that much. Their QC has definitely dipped significantly since covid. My LGS once got a big boy from the factory with a broken stock. I mean, maybe it was dropped in transit or something, their boxes suck ass too. The last few plastic Rossi's I've handled have all been loose with gritty triggers and shit finish. They may put a bit more effort into their more expensive models, and I've handled some old Rossis that were nice. And to balance things out, the Henry is shit too. The finish is a little nicer, but they are usually loose with a rough trigger. At the end of the day though, if it is shit I'd much rather return the gun to the US for service than to Miami to then be shipped to Brazil. Henry customer support is much better than Taurus CS. Personally I wouldn't buy either, I'd look for a good, used gun. Marlin 39a's can still pop up for like $5-600 here and there. And that is on my radar. It would be the perfect compliment to the Winchester low wall, and I have a tendency to collect in pairs. >>65486564Yes it is! The guy that sold it to my LGS was the original owner and it spent its life sitting in a closet for decades. It even still has the stickers on the stock. I need to get more of my rifles threaded, and the 25 is one of those needing it for sure. I did get a spare remington 241 barrel to get chopped and threaded, but I haven't gone and dropped it off yet.

OP here, thank you to those who replied & saved the threadI've decided on the Henry H1 Bandit, its got what I want, along with a higher capacity. I know theres some QC issues & all, but theres really not much that matches my arbitrary criteria.

They made the frontier trim with a short tube and long barrel so it's possible to load with a can in place.

If you're seriously carrying .22 then you need to consider making up for the caliber's primary shortcoming, energy, with overpowered ammo like Stingers or similar. Remember most ammos are designed for a 16" barrel with 16" to burn slow powder, when you put it through a little .22 pissant it's nowhere near its advertised velocity because it's only got 2" to do its business. It sucks to shoot that stuff and it's terribly expensive but it is unquestionably higher quality (less to no duds or fart loads due to unburnt powder) and to a lesser degree provides a little more energyAlso I love .22 so fucking much it's unreal
