if you play any of the modern naval sims, it takes multiple harpoon hits to knock out a surface combatant let alone a fuck huge oil tanker

real question is why didn't they use LRASM
>>
Unless the cargo consists of gasoline products, the oil tanks act as massive shock-absorbing layers or floating bodies against explosions. However, the ship would likely be doomed the moment its stern was accurately struck and destroyed.
>>
>>65486237
You're not using that ship any time soon. What's the problem?
>>65486244
Lets see that shit work from 60 miles away.
>>65486246
Are you retarded? Harpoons exist to slow things down, set them on fire, bloody their noses so you can catch up with them, bomb them, or simply divide and conquer a battlegroup. You've been playing those games wrong. The navy's tactical manual has been available to the public for a long time and you people still get so much of this stuff incredibly wrong.

Why are they trying to destroy the ship instead of just disabling it like previously?

For reference a Ticonderoga is only 173m long and 16.8m wide.
Tankers / cargo ships are just so much larger than military ships you are going to need a lot of bang, also missiles are fired in salvos rather than hoping 1 does the job.

You can see the laser illuminator dot, these are not harpoons, they are hellfires launched from a MQ-9.
>>
>are harpoons just not that powerful?
The purpose was to disable the tanker without creating an ecological disaster. Damaging the stern with the engine room accomplishes the task without sinking or causing the cargo to spill.

Even civilian cargo ships have watertight bulkheads to isolate flooding and prevent total loss of the ship from one leak. Military ships have more bulkheads and better damage control systems that make them very difficult to sink, even when hit multiple times.

Honestly this war is too big-brained for me. It is a mix of what appears to be many dumb decisions, of which some may have been smarter or known calculations.

If you're an oil producer or refiner that doesn't rely on Hormuz, your margins have improved from the higher global prices.
>>
>>65486429
Given the constantly changing statements out of the oval office I think they expected civil war to break out not realizing all the likely insurgents were killed in Jan after Trump told them to fight while the US navy was at Venezuela snatching Maduro.

It's just a massive fuckup and Trump is left in the same position as Putin was 4 years ago, walk away embarrassed or keep going hoping the enemy collapse.
>>
>>65486237
No use using new inventory for old ships. These are the use it or lose it models, they work just fine on tankers.

I thought the Navy's goal here was to damage the ship's engines not send it to the bottom of the ocean in pieces. And wouldn't that also cause it to leak oil all over the place? Sounds kind of bad.

Anyway it's a good thing Iran has forced the US to retreat and broken the blockade by (allegedly) hitting an aircraft carrier and another war ship, causing them to "flee". War's over. Source: Iran

They killed the rudder engine with that Hellfire so it had no steering but then they set fire to the gas fumes in the ships tanks with another Hellfire so it blew up anyway. I dont think they planned for the ship to just explode from a single tiny Hellfire. Call it accidental Death Star Syndrome. Because the ship blew up instead of just being temporarily immobilized the iranians spazzed out and retaliated against muttoid aligned tankers. If it had just been a tiny inconvenience it could have stopped there. Upon CENTCOM inquiry as to why this happened the amerimutt zoomers in drone control responded with #yolo #rekt #boomer tears #fr fr #on god. CENTCOM final statement is delayed due to lack of zoomerspeak interpreters.

Problem is, Iran collapsing wouldn't solve it, either. Now best case you got a dozen warlords fucking with the straits instead. Worst case, the IRGC decides that misery loves company and blows the desalination plants along the gulf coast on the way out. That means the whole region collapses and the strait being open or not becomes meaningless because all that oil, gas, fertilizer, aluminium etc. just got cut off at the source.

FTFY. If America was in any position to dictate anything, the current iranian government would be gone and replaced by an american puppet regime. Why would the US ever do that? The blockade is working. Iran hasn't gotten any oil out to sell for 2 months now. They have no air force or navy, but they do have an army. Why would the US invade Iran and risk lives for when they can just sit back and let Iran's economy continue to crumble.

Retards today are so used to instant gratification they can't wait a few months for happenings.

The iranians said that they were going to sink 6 mutt aligned ships in retaliation for mutts blowing up 3 of their oil tankers.

I dont think the mutt plan was to explode these ships because they shot a hellfire in the rudder compartment first which is completely pointless if you intend to explode the ship with your next missile. I think they tried to disable some oil pump or connection point or whatever on the deck by hitting it with a hellfire and it ofc had pipes connecting it with multiple oil tanks and these happened to be filled with an explosive air-gas mixture from offgassing short carbon chains in the oil residues so kaboom.

The actual intent was probably to just disable these tankers with minimal damage but as you can see they completely fucked it up and exploded them instead. The hilarity never ends with Trump & co.

Also the US is currently being run by complete retards but they're not so completely retarded they think they won't hang if the entire world finally has enough of their shit. Fucking with energy markets is one thing, deliberately causing massive real world disasters is another.

They really aren't, not sure why you made that up

The first two are definitely Hellfires, but I think Kylo might actually have been a Harpoon.

They've been preparing for Israel to start this shit for 45 years and they've been so sanctioned that money is almost an irrelevant concept. What matters is how much stuff they have, not what it costs on paper.
>>
>>65490154
>money is almost an irrelevant concept
Yet when I try telling women this they all laugh and call me a loser. Curious.
>What matters is how much stuff they have, not what it costs on paper.
I'm sure the government that can't into water management has been stockpiling everything they need to run a functioning modern country so that even if the rial goes beyond what it is today, which is 2 million to $1 USD by the way, they'll find a way to afford all the things they need to import. Didn't Russia trade them a bunch of gold for Shasneeds?

It's because you don't have a giant pile of munitions in underground bunkers. Bitches love munitions.

The USD exchange rate is only relevant if you're trading in USD, which they aren't.
>>
>>65490246
Let's see the exchange rate to bitcoin or yuan then, if they're so much better.
>>
>>65490246
Thats not how money works.

No need to wonder, you are the dumbest person in every room.

Iran imports all their food. With what money will Iran import all their food?
>>
>>65490306
I think a lot of people in here are the sort who think that the guy who pays $100 for a box of 9mm is 10 times more killy than the guy who paid $10 for the same box.

>>65490277
>bitcoin or yuan
You mean USD with extra steps.
The point is the exchange rate only fucking matters if you're holding currency or selling handjob futures. If you're exchanging goods for goods in the way that let's say an extremely sanctioned economy is, it's completely fucking irrelevant.
>>
>>65490361
>if you're exchanging goods for goods
why would anyone exchange goods with you at below their monetary value?
>>
>>65490372
NTA but it's the mentallity of "i got something you need and you got something i need"
even if it has a lower value the two parties still WANT that stuff, so they are willing to make a sacrifice to acquire it, usually in that case they can also pair it up with a favor or a small monetary suplement
>>
>>65490381
who would sacrifice the goods they can sell off for more otherwise to trade with iran and what does iran have to offer than said countries would be willing to buy?

does your magical hypothetical savior only exist in your feverish dreams?

We have officially reached DPRK levels of cope. What would Norktard say if he saw the absolute state of (You)?
>>
>>65490388
>what does iran have to offer than said countries would be willing to buy?
oil, drones, terrorist groups, translators, cheap workforce, land, an entire territory considered "neutral" in trade zones allowing the russians to sell their goods from there using shell companies and many other things.

country leaders play on a economic scale that goes beyond money, they can also sell of their own debt toward an other country so they come in and invest to create jobs, france did that with the UAE during macron's first term and now the UAE is buying french carriers and planes, it's all into power play
>>
>>65490433
>france did that with the UAE during macron's first term and now the UAE is buying french carriers and planes
uh my bad, it was just macron unveiling a new aircraft carrier over there, but yeah

you get the idea.

Russians and their pets want to see Americans die by FPV drone so they can feel better about their inferiority. That's all the "boots on zee ground" spam is really about.
>>
>>65489360
Your mentality is that of a thirdie. When someone who agress with you tells you that you are being a fucking fool, a wise man listens to the criticism.
>>
>>65490433
Iran has very little transportable oil remaining, they're using their drones, no one wants to buy land in a warzone, and all of the countries Iran might look to buy things from also have cheap labor.
>>
>>65487105
>There's no way Iran can win without the US committing ground troops.
I'll take that bet.

>>65490472
As the IDF incursions into both Gaza and Southern Lebanon have shown, against a competent enemy drones are nothing more than a mild irritation to operations, akin to things like sniper fire and IED's.
>>
>>65491259
>a competent enemy
lmao

You ignorant fuckwad, the missile in the OP wasn't a Harpoon, it was a Hellfire. If the size didn't make it painfully obvious enough, you can even see the fucking illuminator. You can stop LARPing as a caucasian at any time.

can't export
>drones
blew them all to harass their formerly neutral neighbors
>terrorist groups
insofar as iranian state itself is a terrorist group they might receive aid from russia just to be a blight upon the world but given how broke and pathetic russia is this won't help much.
>ranslators, cheap workforce, land
lol, lmao even
> an entire territory considered "neutral" in trade zones
what would that territory be? because nobody considers iran neutral at this point.
>country leaders play on a economic scale that goes beyond money
this sure sounds like thirdie strongman bootlicker cope, could you at least try to fabricate a reality where a militant shithole like iran has anything to offer to support your cope about how money and economy aren't real as long as you can gun down the opposition and do terrorism, turdie?
