Well, let's just put it this way. Most of my videos of HIMARS aftermath are upload blocked on blue boards because what HIMARS does to human bodies is so fucking brutal on such a widespread scale that it's hard to watch.

So no I don't think anything can compare.

Is there anything special about the launch platform itself? I always thought the missiles were pretty much the only special sauce. And the ability to shoot n scoot is ofc a worthwhile feature. Btw are there any news about the Turkish batch of himars ammo in Ukraine? Afaik it was some atacms along with a large quantity of unguided (?) rockets

Outside of the targeting software/firmware suite, I don't really think so. The missile is what makes it so good

I think Ukraine pretty much put them to work immediately after they got them

I actually was curious enough in the past to look into this. Something about the holes being so uniform in distance gives a trypophobia feeling like the lotus seed edits of flesh.
>>
>>65488954
The missile itself is ultimately meaningless; any reasonably advanced industrial nation can make a equivalent or even better. The targeting system and support (satellites and remote sensing) are what make it useful.

HIMARS having the vehicle profile of a conventional 18-wheeler makes it more useful in peacetime for most nations to train with. Particularly reservists IMO; the vehicle part is no different than most other standard logistics trucks and can drive on most all public roadways unrestricted unlike the M270 or other tracked variants.

They might want it to be really stable as well as use existing vehicles, the new KN-30s that Russia just got apparently have 10 wheels. I would presume 4 pods compared to two missiles 2x the size of an Iskandar would weigh about the same.

>>
>>65491314
honestly, Algeria using it against Libya or Morocco is fairly likely, and while they aren't competent, neither are Morocco or Libya, so they would probably get their shots down range and on target, since the "competence" side of the equation mostly comes down to your ability to stay alive before and after the actual barrage, and since it's Morocco and Libya it's not like they're gonna get BTFO in the assembly area while they are still trying to get their shit together.

the reason why they wouldn't use it is because that would be a pretty major escalation, and also because Algeria is poor and GMLRS are expensive, and bombs stop having utility as a "fleet in being" when you actually use them.
>>
>>65490903
I expect it to be as good as their radar.
>>
>>65490446
>honestly speaking why would that be anyhow a surprised anyhow,
Seeing a very big boom followed by burning wreckage and/or a marked absence of the target (JDAM my beloved) is a lot more obvious than seeing a much smaller airburst boom and a bunch of dust kicking up. Any kind of inert submunition is much more impressive when you see the after-effects at ground level and it looks like every possible surface has been riddled with buckshot that's more than capable of going all the way through an engine block.

Fun fact: one M30A1 has the equivalent projectile count of of ~20,000 shells of 00 buck.

>>65490903
>How good is the SR-5? It's the Chinese Himars
Depends entirely on what's under the hood. The secret sauce behind the success of HIMARS in Ukraine that wasn't the result of the abject incompetence of Russian forces (ABM defenses, counter-battery fire, observation, etc.) was the hardened GPS and INS guidance systems that basically ignored Russian jamming measures and allowed them to drop on a dime. If the Chinese are exporting monkey models of their munitions then I'd expect them to eat shit pretty heavily against a capable opponent but if they're exporting the good stuff I'd expect them to do reasonably well. Considering that their most likely use case is brown-on-brown violence in MENA the safe money that we're not going to get a good look at anything besides the accuracy under uncontested conditions and the payload. The payload is a gimmie even for CHYNA and the accuracy is basically a nothingburger when the missile isn't fighting for its life.
>>
>>65491551
>Fun fact: one M30A1 has the equivalent projectile count of of ~20,000 shells of 00 buck.
And the projectiles fly at 7k mph. They'll go through anything
>>
>>65488954
HIMARS is the ultimate middle way. Long range, accurate fires without sacrificing mobility or concealibility.

While there are systems that beat it in any one of those categories, there are none that can beat it in all four.

This is why the Finns invest in HIMARS, despite having the largest artillery in the west.
>>
>>65488954
It's just a modern SRBM capable launcher, there are a shitload made by different countries and they are all about the same.

>>65488960
This is the only major advantage it has, the ball warhead is amazing on soft targets.
>>
>>65488980
The special part is how simple and flexible it is. The other option for groundbased missiles of simmilar type is a M270. Heavier, slower, packs doubble the punch. But that also means twice as many missiles are at risk when moving around. Turns out more mobile and more widely distributed assets are preferable in the type of war going on. I am sure the M270 was excelent in dessert storm. Dence firepower, no real risk of precise long range counterbattery fire.
>>
Just get both the HIMARS and the K239 Chunmoo, 2 different suppliers with varied weapons types for all purposes.

HIMARS for the surgical stuff and K239 when you just need to split something open.

I mean the CTM-290 has a fucking 500kg warhead.

That vehicle in the photo seems to be loaded with ATACMS pods, or perhaps they're PrSM? There's often been demand for a lot of ATACMS missiles in a single salvo when trying to oversaturate an S-400 complex or something similar. That one strike that was particularly well documented used like 10 or 11 ATACMS missiles, iirc.
>>
>>65488960
Metal rain isnt remotely new. The MRLS had flechette munitions in the 80s and pretty much any airburst shell for traditional artillery will produce similar effects going all the way back to WW1. Himars is the newest iteration of the concept, but its business as usual.
>>
>>65491653
Pretty sure the only reason the Finnish Army invested in M270s was that HIMARS wasn't around yet, and old M270s were available dirt-cheap from nearby countries.

They had an issue where the only munitions available for them were training ammo and AT-2 mines. But now with GMLRS and all the launchers being updated to A2-standard and refurbished, they're finally working as real artillery pieces.
>>
>>65491731

>Outside of the targeting software/firmware suite, I don't really think so
The self-loading crane is a feature.
You've seen ziggers using shells to hammer rockets into launch tubes.
Himars can swap out pods dropped ahead of time in unpredictable locations and then relocate to fire.
>>
>>65492416
>The self-loading crane is a feature.
>You've seen ziggers using shells to hammer rockets into launch tubes.

This is a big point. The reason the Nork and PRC versions look like HIMARS is they copied the loading system. Being able to quickly load a entire pod instead of hammering in individual rockets is a massive survivability boost, even if they are using the same rockets from a older system. Combining faster fire rates with increased survivability makes them several times more effective than older systems.

LMTVs are fixed body trucks. So they're actually far more common then tractor trailers setups. It takes maybe 30 minutes to license a dude to drive one. Eh make it an hour I forgot about the written test
>>
>>65491853
>produce similar effects going all the way back to WW1
In pre and early WW1 shrapnel shells were the default munition used in field guns. HE didn't become the norm until later.
>>
>>65491839
A single vehicle with 8 PrSMs seems like it would be pretty effective. A HIMARS with bigger, longer range missiles, and more of them.
>>

if you had something like an iskander (which has proper countermeasures against air defense) then you'd only need one missile to take out an AD battery. or maybe the the PrSMs are fine and the problem is that S-400s are are a lot better than patriots. idk

I mean, if russia's only functional ballistic missile (picrel) were inferior to an SRBM a fraction of the size, that would be a problem. But then again, russia also blows dozens of iskanders monthly with zero observable effect, so one has to wonder
>>
>>65490841
This. All the supply trucks just became potential modular MLRS launchers. With no turret, they have to be manually aimed by the driver in order to squeeze out the last bit of maximum range, but that's easy enough to do with the help of the same laptop used to operate the pods.
