There was a short time in 2023 when I was obsessed with HD; I made some mods (incl. a remote detonator for the remote explosives that you otherwise have to use the console for), some maps and was seriously considering starting a mapping project, though at that time people were still afraid of UDMF and ZScript, and since general IQ is dropping sharply with each passing year, I doubt something like that could be done today ;_;

There are new sets of community-made maps, some of them of stunning quality which far eclipses anything released commercially, being released on a weekly basis in the community. The only way to play Wolfenstein 3D on higher difficulties is with the mouse, and you'll have to play so fucking shitty and slow with keyboard only in Doom that it's sleep inducing. Final Doom is the best part, and you quite literally are Not Gonna Make It if you don't use the mouse.

Putting in my vote for Ashes 2063 series. Total conversion that now has a part 1, part 1 expansion campaign, massive part 2, a prequel part 3 game, part 4 in the works, and another part 3.5 map pack also in the works.

I'm a bit surprised noone's mentioned Brutal Doom yet. Easily one of my favorite mods and the E-day mappack is a lot of fun and pretty challenging. I've also been playing Brutal Doom with the VietDoom weapon replacer because blasting demons with an M16A1 or a Mosin Nagant is pretty kino, especially on the earth themed levels because it kinda feels like you're taking back your own neighborhood from a demonic invasion with weapons you could conceivably own or come across irl
