To the North and West are miles of mountainous terrain and the Southern road is a dirt path that winds seemingly endlessly through nothing until connecting to some main roads. I originally pegged the Eastern valley as being the most likely avenue of approach for a motorized/mechanized force, but it appears the John Day River does not have a bridge. Regardless, I'd expect it to be pretty crossable for any amphibious vehicle. The airport might be a potential beachhead for any airmobile force.
