Now that the mods are asleep, do you prefer the 1851 Navy pr the 1860 Army?
1851 navy. The longer forcing cone just looks better.
navy
>>65494265>>65494292Based.
Steel frame London Navy
>>65494248I like the Colt 1848 Army (Colt Dragoon) and the Colt 1860 Army just on account of them being .44 cal.
>>65494248Navy. I like the more blocky, angular front end.1860 is too smooth for me.
>>65494248Navy is pure sex!
>>654942481851, preferably with a cartridge conversion and heeled bullets.>yep, it's me again
>>65496581I want one of those so bad but I don't have 500 bucks to spend on one+a steel frame. Also I'm not sure how buying ammo for it would go, since it's not actually a firearm nor registered to my name, and you need a firearm registered in your name to buy ammo in CA (but I'd probably just stock up at Bass Pro Shop in Vegas lol).
>>65496623>500 bucksDude, steel frames are only like $300.Just a quick search and came across this one. I think I got mine back in like 2017 for 3 or 350. Midway USA also has them in stock for like 317. I’ve never used pic rel, but they’re not that much at all. Also, I’ve never had an Uberti, but I own 2 Pietta’s and the quality is really good.
>>65496623Just realized anon that you replied to has a cartridge conversion. Mine posted here >>65496684is just a standard muzzle loading black powder one.
Anons, would it be retarded for me to buy a 5” barrel for my 1851, and load up 5 cylinders, then get a conceal carry holster and carry it?
>>65494248
>>65496623Don't do this specific conversion if you're planning on buying ammunition. My cylinder is cut for 38Spl brass using .375" heeled bullets. I'm not sure anyone even makes that. Even finding the right bullet is a pain in the ass, so I cast mine. You *could* get away with a cylinder in 38Spl using hollow base bullets (particularly with BP, which tends to upset bullets better than smokeless usually) and some did this historically, but in my experience it's marginal for anything past 25 yards or so. Heeled bullets were invented as a solution to a very real problem. >shitty ca ammo lawsCan't help you with that, sorry, but I do have an observation. Having driven from WA to San Diego a number of times over the years, CA is a soul-crushingly long state, but it's not that wide. What's keeping you from a day trip to Nevada or Arizona?>>65496692Yeah, a decent cartridge conversion costs more than the fucking revolver does. Such is the tragedy of cowboy larping. I like Kirst.
>>65496623there's a lot of ways to buy ammo for them thoughyou could get paper cartridges, cast it yourself, or just buy powder and bullets separately. I wouldn't put it past libtards to try to regulate any of that stuff though, but it generally seems like they can't because they already tried.
>>65496704I don't think so as long as you're okay with the ammo capacity
>>65496623Get a legally firearm gun in the same caliber
>>65497591There’s just something about it, anon..I’m beginning to think I may have a touch of autism.
I prefer the most popular colt percussion revolver
>>654942481860, bigger grip, bigger bore, improved loading lever.
>>65496704Id like to see you try to change the cylinder on a colt revolver without tools under stress If 5 shots isnt enough, neither will 30
>>65496758While I like the New Model Army, it would have benefitted from having a wider arbor pin.
Tell me why I shouldn’t get an Uberti Walker Colt, a second barrel reamed out for bird shot (perhaps a .410 choke), and a stock. Grouse are free but style points are extra.
>Halfway look into getting a black powder hand cannon>Seems like percussion caps are unreliable even with brand new onesIs this true? You would think that with hundreds of years of development they'd be a mature technology by now.I don't think I'd ever plan to use a cowboy blaster as anything but a range toy, but the idea of a gun not going boom on demand seems both lame and a potential safety hazard.I wonder if you could make a reliable black powder revolver that uses a pizeoelectric switch to fire the rounds
I REALLY like the look of the Whitney revolver. I wish those Italians would make a reproduction of it.
>>65498665
I prefer the army personally. The 1851’s by Uberti and pietta seem to be a little more polished from the factory, but really either or benefits from a good fluff & dust. Nipple upgrade goes a long way. I don’t bother with conversions. Caps are cheap and you can even make them yourself if so inclined.
>>65496704Yes - 1851 had no quick change cylinders, you are looking for Remington 1858. Also: >carrying 30 loaded barrels with exposed percussion caps in your pocket
>>65498500They aren't made for self defense anymore. Most of these repros are destined to be wall hangers or boomer fidget spinners.
>>65494248Navy cause no frame over the cylinder looks cool.
>>65498665I wish Pietta would make one. Just make the Spiller and Burr with a steel frame and I can file it down to Whitney size.
oh nice, a big iron thread
>>65497950I'm saving up for one with a six inch barrel. If Uberti made one in that barrel length I would have bought it already.
>>65497974why would you need a reamed out barrel? Couldnt you just make your own grapeshot with paper/string and have a birdshot equivalent.its not like the barrel needs to chamber .410. its the cylinder.you can argue the rifling would make the shot donuthole so you really needed to remove the rifling but really the shot out of a handgun was going to pattern like crap either way. and the twist rate on a blackpowder compared to a modern gun is really minor to the point where it might as well be smoothbore.
>>65497955You don't need tools to pop out the cylinder, just hammerfist the wedge out of place and then pull it the rest of the way with your fingers (let it hang off the screw so you don't lose it). Half-cock, ejection lever down and the entire barrel can come out with the cylinder. New cylinder along with the barrel and hammer the wedge back in the way you smacked it out.
How the fuck do I keep my uberti from cap jamming up
>>65499222different caps different nipples or modifying the hammer by filling it in/filing off sharp edges.different ways to make it work
>>65498500It's true, but with a caveat: the alternative back in the day was a flintlock, and caps are way more reliable than that so the people of the era weren't dissatisfied. Even when metallic cartridges became a thing and everyone from the manufacturers to the local blacksmith were doing cartridge conversions on CB revolvers, it wasn't uncommon for someone to just stick with caps and loose powder. It was considered good enough for most people (especially those on a budget), and while the general store in town may or may not have a particular cartridge that you were looking for, you could buy lead, powder, and caps damned near anywhere. Like any technology it wasn't perfect, and most gun manufacturers provided features to minimize cap jams that the Italians may or (probably) may not have reproduced faithfully because they didn't understand what everything did. In general, if you use quality caps that fit the nipples properly and snap the barrel upwards sharply while thumbing back the hammer, you won't have many problems. (Yes, that motion of jerking the barrel vertical while thumbing the hammer that you've seen in movies isn't just to look cool, it originally had a purpose.)>they'd be a mature technology by nowIt is. We call it the metallic cartridge today. Some of the boomers bitch about not having their reloading presses installed on their guns but most people are pretty happy with the new format. Also >>65498746 has it right, the Italian low priced CB revolvers are fucking trash because they're built to a price point by third worlders that don't give a shit and wouldn't know how to if they wanted to. They have only a marginal understanding of how these things work and will gladly change or delete an important design feature for a stupid reason. Note how Uberti fucked up the Schofield gas collar. There are ways to do what they wanted to do but they did it the cheapest, easiest, and worst way, because they're fucking Italians.
>>65494248the 1860 army because i dont have the hands of a 7 year old girl
>>65496623I don’t think you need to have a firearm registered to you to purchase ammunition in CA. If you do have a firearm registered to you I believe the background check for ammo was $1. They may have increased that fee by now. However if do not have a firearm registered to you in CA, the ammo background check is/was $20. The requirement to purchase ammo in CA is passing the background check. This is my understanding anyway.
>>65499414Oh, and I think it’s only $20 the first time you do it without having a firearm registered to you. After that I think it’s $1 for you also. Check it out though, pretty sure you can buy bullets as long as you are not a prohibited person.
>>65499299Mine looks like it's just the cap falling back toward the hammer, I already have slixshot nipples. Does anyone sell anything that can block caps from doing that?
>>65499433Thats wrong cap size then
>>65499222the main spring is too weak and allows backpressure to lift hammer and blow the cap around hammer or into pieces and into hammer channel. Double springs and you get basically 100% ignition reliabilit and cap jams go away. You can also experiment with nipples and hammer face.
>>65499433Slixshot might make the problem worse: Ive understood that while the anvil face is better the fire hole is larger and gives the cap more backpressure, tearing it apart. CB guns are finicky and changing even the smallest detail might change things completely. It took me all summer of testing but now I think what all phenomena they have and how they function and my Uberti Navy now has over 100 shot streak with no cap jams nor failures to ignite or fire and I shoot CAS with it.
>>65499530So you're saying I should have gone with the Ox Yoke nipples instead? They're even less than half the price.
>>65499579It can be worth experimenting anything. What kind of cap jams exactly do you get? And do the caps go off reliably? I now use uberti caps(shitty italian manufacturing, they dont even all look similar to naked eye) and RWS 1075 caps.
>>65499586The caps go off and then if I'm not careful when I'm cocking the hammer either apart of the cap or all of it falls backward between the hammer and the frame keeping me from cocking it even halfway sometimes. Worst lockup had me using the loading lever on a small knife in front of the cylinder to get the barrel off and cylinder out before I could get to the cap.
>>65499600Ok so its the usual ones then. Ive seen someone have 4 caps under the hammer out of 5 loaded and fired lol. If you dont want to try double springs or 3rd type of nipples but you have welding gear something you can try is to weld shut the hammer's safety position notch and make the hammer face solid. What happens now is that as soon as backpressure lifts the hammer it pushes the cap in that notch and tears it apart. It also pushes the cap around the hammer face but that notch thing alone seems to fix jams for many people.
>>65499611Damn. Did the original colts have it this bad?
>>65496704no you would be a man of culture and very based.
>>65499222im so tired of you lazy zoomers. if you niggers werent so poor id make a business where you send me your replica revolver and i tune it up to fix the common issues and improve performance
>>65499623Almost certainly not but they did have stronger springs and both caps and nipples were different.
>>65499691The percussion caps they used back then were indeed different. The explosive used in them was mercury fulminate, which was more sensitive to impact than the lead azide based explosives used in primers and percussion caps today.Generally speaking, it's a good thing that mercury fulminate isn't used anymore, it's toxic as hell, sensitive to moisture, degrades over time, and leaves guns caked in toxic corrosive residue. The same sensitivity that made these caps more "reliable" also made them more prone to chainfires.
>>65499579Review on Midway from 8 months ago claims they are undersized.
>>65496704There's this open secret in rural areas where many 18-year-olds just bet a bp cap-and-ball revolver until they are 21 and can get a normal handgun. Is it ideal? No. Is it convenient? Also no. Is it practical? No, for the third time. However, it sure beats nothing if you are unlucky enough to get attacked by a wild hog.
>>654942481860 Army, but don't tell my mom
>>65499124>just disassemble your gun in the middle of a self defense shooting bro>just use your knuckle to knock out an extremely tight steel wedge broJust give up, your entire thought process is retarded.
>>65501068Oh this is why the shorter barrel Ruger Old Army is harder to find
>>65501222The under pressure part is the hard part. Just use it as a blunt weapon at that point.
>>65494248Obligatory
>>65494248It's the 1860 Army for me. The pinnacle of aesthetic refinement.
>>65494248Good or muh?
>>65502314Cylinder swapping is a meme, but I've heard it doesn't cap jam like a Colt
