I like the looks of these planes. Note I said looks. Are they still Tumansky engines? I can't recall off the top of my head what the engine hour-rating is but I have read that they can't use the afterburners for more than 30 seconds or risk a fire. Like this one a couple years ago:

I kinda like the brutal Soviet aesthetics. I just love Cold War shit.

The MiG-21 and Tu-22 encompasses Soviet brutalist aesthetic well.
The MiG-31 is a fridge someone stuck wings to.

The more I look at this the more I see how much of a kludge this really is
>>
>>65498124
I think the 25 looks nicer but the 31 has it's own charm; It weighs as much as a T-72, goes mach 2.8, and shoots giant missiles, it's pretty unique.

I like the photo recon -25s

The initial MiG25 engines were cruise missile engines.
They eventually got real engines, but they don't fly much.
Normally that's a problem, but these are jets that you need no skill to use. You fly higher and faster than anyone else, you have the biggest radar and so you release your missile from 150-300 kilometers away and you go home. No need to train manouvers or whatever. It's a lot like an F14, but even bigger.
The MiG31 remains the single most dominant air to air fighter jet in the Ukraine war and for some reason I'm the only one who saw it coming because nobody else apparently understands basic aerodynamics well enough to guess that flying high and fast with the heaviest missile is more important than agility.

For me, talking Soviets, it's the early Yak-28 medium bomber.

>>65499731
No Tu-95 mention?

I could put up a triptych of MiG-21, Mirage2000, and HAL Tejas on a screen and give a short seminar on why the aesthetic of the MiG is good, the Mirage is meh, and the Tejas is uh-oh stinky.
