I just got some kind of an agency trade in Mini-14. So let's talk about the Mini-14 and Mini-30 . I have some dumb questions I'm hoping some of you more experienced owners can answer.
First off it's dinged up at the top of the barrel. Will this effect performance at all?
Also it's been marked up by hand with "MSP 114177" on the receiver above the factory serial number. I'm assuming this is the agency it belonged to and their inventory number. Any ideas what agency that could be?

I have to say this points a lot more naturally for me then my ARs which I really, really like. It's like the sights are aligned naturally just by shouldering it. I also like the very simple sights, the rear sight is just a large circular hole and the front blade is very visible through it. I'm assuming I'm supposed to line up the top of the front sight with the center of the rear sight hole?

For starters stick with factory Ruger mags, you can get spare 20s and 30s no problem now. All other mags kinda suck or are at minimum hit or miss. Lastly because you have an older thinner barrel model(I'm rusty on the series of these things) I would at least look into a accu-strut. They seem fairly easy to install and usually increase the mechanical accuracy. But I wouldn't immediately rush into that.

Truthfully I'm not the most practiced shooter so I may not even notice the inaccuracy issues other people report. Also I have 2 more Ruger 20s and a 10 on the way. It came with 1 20 rounder. I've had a 20 year or so love affair with these things myself but never bought one because I couldn't justify the price of a new one when my ARs are (at least on paper) better. I just said "fuck it, I want it!" last weekend when I found the trade ins for cheapish.

I've been waiting like 2 months for Ruger to exchange the scope rings that came with my mini-14. They're scope rings bro it's not that hard. Gonna put a trijicon ascent 1-4x on it whenever the right rings do arrive.Anyone know why it takes so long for them to exchange scope rings? Or why they send out ones that don't fit 30mm tubes by default?
>>65504009Forgot to add, I installed the smaller .050" gas bushing from Accuracy Systems because minis come from the factory horrifically overgassed. I felt it made a big difference. Only shot ~120 rounds with the smaller bushing though so can't truly speak to its reliability yet.

Before you shoot it and its shit and you think you need to buy an accustrut to fix it. Take apart the gas block and retighten those 4 screws evenly. If those are wrong like 1 sides really tight and the other is a huge gap the accuracy suffers.

I like the wear on the stock and the agency markings, that gouge out of the barrel is a little much, but if it doesn't effect how it shoots I'll live with it. It sounds like there's plenty still in stock so you could grab one. The bore does look to be in perfectly good shape and I imagine that's the most important part. I got distracted from disassembling it, but I'll do that and post pics tonight or tomorrow as long as the thread is still up.

Police surplus '14 gang represent. You don't "need" an Accustrut unless you're target shooting. It was designed as a minute-of-coyote gun and the aim doesn't start walking until you've fired a few shots anyway.

If any of it feels wrong just redo it. Having the gas block wrong was a really common issue with minis. The more its off the worse it strings as the gun heats up. Its always going to string to some degree but its much worse if the gasblocks not even.
since you have the pencil barrel you should get an accu-strut. really helps with the harmonics and follow-up accuracy

I also have a King Cobra, but it's back at Colt with a broken trigger return spring. Overall, I like them, and the fit and finish is really good, but it doesn't inspire confidence.
