If I was some poor indian peasant without any armor and some dude came to my village waving around a bunch of razor sharp coils I would just fucking leave everything behind, izzat be damned. It's probably not even effective but fuck that I'd rather just take my chances with a spear to the gut.

I think they're overrated, personally, considering how mexicans liken them to proper weapons of steel in effectiveness, but that's not to say they were bad
>>
>>65512151
Maybe I'm dumb but I never understood how or why war clubs existed.
I don't really see why some groups never seemed to develop good organic armour, or why the spear and formation fighting never caught on, or the shield, or the bow.

Because what use is a war club if there's a ball of 20 guys throwing fist sized rocks at you. Doesn't everyone adopt wicker shields, at which point you war club doesn't help you much and a spear becomes a really good weapon all round.

I wouldn't say they were as good as steel but they were pretty much the most devastating a non metallic weapon could be without getting into goofy territory with poisoned blades and stuff(which they sometime did), anyone who's handled a proper obsidian blade knows that any soft tissue would be absolutely obliterated with just a light touch. Doesn't really matter how good they were for this thread though, all that matters is they were cool.

I also love their romanticisation of spear throwers. Opening a battle with a barrage of javelins, then having dudes in heavy armor with swords and shields rush forward and clash as formations of spearmen move in behind them to back them up is such a kino way to do battle.
>>
>>65512251
While I'm sure their warriors were as good as any others, and their military doctrine was perfectly valid, they still sucked.

If you have bronze tipped spears, but not yeomanry, you army sucks. Ancient greeks said that about barbarians in 500BC. 1000BC. Then renaissance sailors find these MFs living in the bronze age.

No hoplites, no wall shield. Still just skirmishers for days. No pike, no phalanx.

Their armour i imagine was far more complex then is generally depicted, they must have been fighting in gambeson with leather siding, cloth breaks and a mantle of hard wood. No way these guys were fighting in ponchos.
>>
>>65512276
Mostly a case of limited materials, there was some ritualized fighting between champions over matters of honour, shows of force and turning up to throw spears, insults and maybe beat the fuck out of someone once in a while. Lot of slave taking, people eating of the defeated and strike-raids on ocean canoes which turned up when there was some kind of need to do it.
Not a lot of shield or armour use in the Polynesian warriors, sometime woven coconut fibres and woven matting types of material. There was some bows but not many, unlike the Papua peoples who really enjoyed shooting each other with those and there was no metal use. Some of the Maori used jade clubs and 'cleavers' for a way of chopping up each other but they were pretty uncommon as its hard as fuck to work when all you have is rocks and sand!
>>
>>65512289
I think you will find bronze is far better then people think, which is why everyone adopted it, we got the bronze age, left all those loosers behind in the stone age.

The obsidian war club has a lot going for it as a club, but it's very heavy compared to a sword, the fragile edge means you're going to struggle to destroy shields with it, hence you see all these small maces which i assume were pretty much exclusively for destroying wooden shields, and great as berzerkers are, a two handed axe, mace, a great sword even, without heavy armour the enemies will just throw rocks at you. You still can't do much about their shields, your ass is getting stabbed with some kind of battle knife.

They conquered almost all of known civilization and created an empire of 15 million people. Their army was excellent.
>No hoplites, no wall shield. Still just skirmishers for days. No pike, no phalanx.
I can't believe im even typing out a response to you, you have no idea what their army and fighting style was like and you're just GUESSING and getting mad about your uneducated guesses!?
>>65512323
>I think you will find bronze is far better then people think, which is why everyone adopted it
When exactly did I say their stuff was better than bronze? You're just making up shit to get mad about
>The obsidian war club has a lot going for it as a club
It's not a club, it was universally described as a sword by euros making first contact, and considering the fact you couldn't even bother googling the name I don't think you know a lot about this subject.
>the fragile edge means you're going to struggle to destroy shields with it
Swords are not good at destroying shields anywhere, that's why dedicated anti shield axemen exist. Even the few exceptions to this rule like falxes and khopeshes were designed to function like axes.
>hence you see all these small maces which i assume were pretty much exclusively for destroying wooden shields
Why the fuck would that be their purpose instead of axes?
>and great as berzerkers are
Berserkers were never particularly effective and these were not berzerkers they were trained specialists
>a two handed axe, mace, a great sword even, without heavy armour the enemies will just throw rocks at you.
They did not fight unarmored with two handed weapons, those heavy frontline troops almost exclusively fought with armor and with a shield and one handed weapon. You didnt even look at the fucking images I posted.
Also, just like with the other anon i replied to, THEY FORMED A GIANT EMPIRE with this fighting style, so clearly it worked.

Bunch of genuine sub 90 iq retards on this board jesus christ.

>>65511667
1. It doesn't
2. Often bronze age swords were designed more like axes and choppers than what you would normally think of as a sword. This had a lot to do with the limitations of the materials they had available. Bronze and copper alloys have to be made quite thick to remain rigid, don't hold their edges well, and are therefore pretty heavy and lose their cuttin ability before long. You just work with what you've got

NTA but conquering stone age tribes as a almost neolithic empire doesn't make neolithic armies excellent
>>
>>65512276
Well if you're a stone age culture, a paddle-shaped war club is rather good at braining people and rapidly disabling them by cleanly snapping through the bones of any limbs you land a good strike on. It's not a bad weapon at all.

Fiji also was pretty lawless and raids could happen anytime, anyplace so folks really couldn't carry shields everywhere and instead spent time on gitting gud at evading attacks. The Fijis specifically also like two-handed clubs a lot.
>>
>>65512373
>stone age tribes
Organized bronze age city states with armies numbering in the tens or hundreds of thousands.
But you're right bro, succeeding at the jobs they were assigned to doesn't mean they were good at succeeding at the jobs they were assigned to(???) they should have changed their incredibly successful battle strategies and designed their army around fighting things that didn't exist in their world and using strategies and tactics they didn't need. That's why Greek and Roman armies were shit, they didn't have good anti tank or AA capabilities.
You should consider using a tripcode so I can automatically filter out your retarded posts

If you conquered and occupied all of known civilization and also colonized hundreds of thousands of people living in uncivilized guerilla tribal units with that rock I'd say that rock was pretty fucking effective and improving it would be a pointless waste of resources that could better be spent elsewhere
