geometry doesnt change with technological development.why did nobody try this in medieval times?
>>65511994because they didn't have compound bows tardo.
>>65511997You could probably do this without any gears and pulleys by just having very aggressively recurved armsOf course the downside would be a stupidly heavy draw weight for honestly not that big of a return
>>65512063learn basic geometry and come back
>>65512063no you can't, the string would slip back onto the bow without the pulleys. they are essential to redirect the draw force from the direction that wants to shear or snap the limbs off to pulling them together like a normal bow.
>>65512063>You could probably do this without any gears and pulleys by just having very aggressively recurved armsI do not think you could.I do believe it /could/ have been invented earlier. Cams had been used since ancient times and it is not a huge leap to think perhaps an eccentric pulley could have been fabricated but without mass manufacture cost per bow would have been quite high.
>>65512072I think the geometry of compound bows is anything but basic>>65512075Yeah, fair enough, I only skimmed the image and sorta misunderstood how it worked
>>65511994More of medieval crossbow design was about minimizing the chance the thing snapped and cut your arm off than you realize. Getting the materials to cooperate is more than half the battle.
>Why didn't people back then just do what we can do now with materials and manufacturing precisions we have after centuries of steady development?!?!I hate you people so fucking much.
>>65515759Is there really anything that would prevent one being made with medieval technologies and materials? Sure we have carbon fiber, nylon strings and precision bearings but laminar wood, plant fiber string and greased brass bearings should be fine enough. All a modern bow would be is lighter for the same power.
>>65517314>Is there really anything that would prevent one being made with medieval technologies and materialsLargest problem would be string, silk string would work good I believe, but it's not easy to procure.Pulleys can be hand carved from hard wood, or mass produced cast bronze. Made from bronze would be heavy but whatever.Main obstacle is lack of inventions oriented minds to invent such thing, medieval people were extremely conservative and inept.
>>65517597>Main obstacle is lack of inventions oriented minds to invent such thing, medieval people were extremely conservative and inept.you say that like they didn't also develop breech-loading guns shooting metallic cartridges
>>65517597oh yeah also>ineptas if an average person didn't have to be competent at planning and various practical skills to not just starve/freeze to death over winter
>>65511994>why did nobody try this in medieval times? If it ain't broke don't fix it
>>65517314>>65517597I wouldn't say it's the lack of innovative capability but that regular bows and crossbows worked well enough and later guns became the much more effective replacement for them. Compound bows would be much more of a pain to maintain as a battle weapon too.
>>65517314>Is there really anything that would prevent one being made with medieval technologies and materials?yes, the cam geometry and the ultra lightweight materials are necessary to reduce friction and weight of all the junk that'd make the whole idea worth it.>Main obstacle is lack of inventions oriented minds to invent such thing, medieval people were extremely conservative and inept.said the guy dumber and more worthless than the shittiest medieval peasant.
>>65517597Yes anon, they were so inept that after centuries of absolutely nothing happening they somehow emerged from the dark ages ready to conquer (colonize) the world with technology superior to anyone else.Don't let the "enlightenment" cunts gaslight you, they stood on the shoulders of giants and the first thing they did was a take a massive shit.
>>65517609>>65517931Read how about Minie ball (you probably know) and Nessler ball (your 100% don't know) were invented.First inventors were high society men who had plenat of income and and time to spare. Usually these men (high ranked military) just spend all this on fucking actresses and prostitutes. These dedicated their life to art of killing other men.2. Second both could be made in like 16th century, but they weren't because people were busy fucking girls and drinking beer.3. Minie found his form by bruteforcing experiments with dozens different bullet fromw, Nessler just loaded Minie ball into smoothbore musket
>>65517597>Largest problem would be stringNot at all, a compound bow is pulleys cams attached to a bow, so the string actually experiences less force or tension than an equivalent normal bow.
>>65518004Problem with strings thick string adds friction and is waste kinetic energy if its high mass Synthetic strings can be made very light and thin to evade these problems. Natural string are thick and heavy.
