What makes a rifle cartridge a rifle cartridge specifically? What about intermediate or pistol cartridges? What's the line between them?Would a hypothetical select fire gun that could theoretically fire a pistol cartridge or rifle cartridge without modification be a submachinegun or battle rifle?
>>65512052There is nothing mechanical(specific) that can prevent you from firing cannon shell from your wrists. The lines are practical and conventional. Heavier and longer barrel rifle with a stock can fire bigger cartridge with more powder behind it.There will be a hypotherical name for your hyperthetical rifle for which the inventor and promoter will do their best making it stick.
>>65512052There's no line, and this causes boomers to make dumb range rules.>.454 Casull 1900ft/lbs>fine>5.56 Nato 1700 ft/lbs>not ok, rifle cartridge reeeee
>>65512631it's harder to stop a fast boolet tho
>>65512052It's up to the council of guntubersFor example, 6.5 jap and 6.5 grendel have the exact same ballistics when fired from the same length barrel, but the jap is a full size rifle cartridge while the grendel is intermediate. This classification is done by guntubers to discredit the fedorov as the first assault rifle because hating Russia is what pleases the algorithm
>>65512052according to US law, if there is a pistol chambered in the cart. it is a pistol cart. No, it's not enforced, its just another charge they would add if you are a bad person on the bad side of the law.
>>65512756No it's not an assault rifle you stupid nigger because it was designed and employed as an automatic rifle which is analogous to a modern LMG in role. Function defines class, for example- according to the people that developed it- the XM-177E2 and K1 carbines are both submachine guns as they're both meant to supplant the last generation of SMGs in their role and not serve as a general purpose infantry rifle. By the same merit the Sturmgewher 58 (Austria's FAL) is an assault rifle, because that's what they used it as and designated it
Anything is a dildo if you're brave enough
>>65512756>to discredit the fedorov as the first assault rifle because hating Russilol
>>65512052Cartridges that are typically fired in hand guns are handgun cartridges, and cartridges that are typically fired in rifles are typically called rifle cartridges. Are there .45-70 hand guns? Yes. But I can only think of a small handful. Meanwhile there dozens and dozens of types of rifles that shoot .45-70. It’s not concrete, but I think that’s a good general delineator 99% of the time.
>>65512052Doctrine. That’s it really. Ignore all the fake and gay legal stuff. For practicality, it’s doctrine.
>>65512052>What makes a rifle cartridge a rifle cartridge specifically? What about intermediate or pistol cartridges? What's the line between them?More so than case dimensions, bullet size and powder loads, I'd say "can it do the job intended for it" is best.Take .30 Carbine. It can be used in pistols / revolvers but it is a impractical quasi-handcannon that looses a ton of velocity and produces a big flash. In the M2 Carbine it is too accurate at distances beyond 100m to be a submachine gun but not quite accurate enough at 300-400m to be issued as the main service rifle so unfit to be a proper assault rifle. PDW is a modern and fairly accurate term that has come to define its roll but it has served on the front lines as a quasi-assault rifle in South Vietnam or many other jungle or city conflicts throughout the early to mid cold war.So is the .30 Carbine a jumped up pistol round, a PDW cartridge or an intermediate cartridge and the answer is all three work depending on the context it is being used in and to varying degrees of effectiveness. Pistol (Much better choices), PDW (good) Assault Rifle (Okay but far from ideal). So if you made a .30-06 pistol it would in that context make it a pistol round, just a very, very bad one. I doubt anyone would refer to it as such outside of that context though.
>>65513776>hit character limit>>65512756>For example, 6.5 jap and 6.5 grendel have the exact same ballistics when fired from the same length barrel, but the jap is a full size rifle cartridge while the grendel is intermediate.See, if 6.5 Arisaka was chosen as a NATO cartridge and loaded into say a FAL, you could probably make the argument either way, being an Assault Rifle or a Battle Rifle. Both 6.5 Grendel and 6.5 Arisaka are quite different from 5.56mm NATO and closer to 7.62 NATO in performance. There is line dividing Assault Rifle and Battle Rifle that they sit near, so you really have a few options, try and make a judgment call on exactly where the line is, make a new category for them all together or decide it doesn't matter and just pick one arbitrarily, it won't change how the rifle performs in battle. The Japanese Howa Type 64 pictured is an interesting case, it's a Battle Rifle that used full sized 7.62 NATO cartridges but with a reduced powder load making the performance more in line with an AK-47.A lot of the either or cases, the best way to resolve them is to just call them whatever the user nation calls them so long as they don't get absurd with it like calling a Lada a Tank.
>>65512052If I can fit it entirely in my urethra it is a pistol cartridge.

>>65512052Is this a thread to gotcha over 5.7?
>>65513776>it is too accurate at distances beyond 100m to be a submachine gunwut
>>65513864The M2 Carbine can hit reliably out to around 200-250m, SMG's aren't really all that practical beyond a hundred meters.
>>65512052Personally I think it revolves around if it's short and fat or long and skinny or bottlenecked. 5.7 walks the line. I don't think there's much of a difference between pistols in .380 up to .45 acp, or intermediate or rifle cartridges like .223 to .308, the recoil is about the same all the way through. I'd dare to say making comparisons is mostly pointless unless you're directly comparing something like .380 to .308 where there's an obvious extreme or the action being blowback or piston or some such which has nothing to do with cartridges
>>65512052>will it fit in a short action Intermediate>does it require a long action RifleYes .308 is an intermediate cartridge
Any cartridge that goes into a rifle is a rifle cartridge. Anything that goes in a pistol is a pistol cartridge. And same with shotgun. I never thought I'd have to spell it out for someone

>>65515435Not a pistol.So that would make the american-180 a battle rifle.
>>65515376If you put it in a pistol, it's a pistol cartridge. If you put it in a rifle, it's a rifle cartridge. I thought that was pretty straight forward
>>65515453I'm pretty sure battle rifles are rifles and not pistols. Any other term is gay to use..don't over complicate things
>>65515478It's not a pistol.And it's not a rifle.So what is it?
>>65515453>So that would make the american-180 a battle rifle.lrIt's a SMG but even if you put .22 it in a battle rifle, then it wouldn't be a battle rifle anymore, it would be a plinking rifle.
>>65515482There are only pistols, rifles and shotguns. Adding anyone names to them is just silly and you want to sound special. And it's a rifle. If you can't tell that, you shouldn't own guns
