The Russians/Soviets took one look at our Space Shuttle and started testing autocannons in space, all because the Space Shuttle had a robotic arm and cargo bay. Everything the US does in space scares them because they know US space stuff works and does what its supposed to, so anything that vaguely could be a weapon may as well be a highly effective weapon system in space to them.
