Homework: Talk about what you have learned about knives recently.

For me; The Sebenza is the Jack of all trades, Master of none.

...
talk about knives here

that people still post about the selamenza
>>
>>65532415
Do you really want to put it on your belt?
I carried this today and it was not so comfortable, and there's a noticeable print in summer wear and it is heavy and a 2 hand opener.

Alternatively, damn, the buck 117 is up to 94.99 now. I bought it 2 years ago at 75 and it was the same price as a 119.

You could get a fixed blade cheap mora and be good to go for 12.50 or 25 or whatever they charge these days, but I've never been in a city or suburbs anywhere where carrying a fixed blade is normal..
>>
>>65532432
It's functional art for the obsessive knife perfectionists who have $500.

>>

>>
Honestly sebenzas and Chris Reeve in general are pretty over hyped
>>
>>65532597
it's a fine knife and I'm sure back when it very first released it was the shit. There genuinely wasn't anything else like it. But we live in a world now where there's a whole hell of a lot like it

But it really is just a normal folding knife. I kinda expected to have some "wow, I get it now" moment but no, that didn't happen.
>>
>>65532415
How big?
>>
>>65532614
I have three. It takes opening and closing the knife 1000+ times in order for it to become smooth. Then the best part about the knife compared to others is that you can take it apart and put it back together wihtout having to adjust anything other than the main pivot a little bit. Just tighten everything else down and it will feel just the same as before. I have a bunch of knives I've taken apart and can't get them to feel the same as before. Spydercos are notorious for this. I have a bunch of PM2s and no matter how much I adjust them, I can't get them all to feel like the best one of them feels.
>>
>>65532415
very loose criteria anon, almost any sub-$100 in the world will do both of those..
I probably go with the kabar 1266 "modified tanto" thing, but that's me

I got all 17 swords + 1 wootz katar finally in & unboxed. Doing an initial triaging of them through the weekend to stabilize any rust or whatnot before I put them away to focus on my current projects. All of them but the Katar are British made, all but 2/3rds or so are made by Wilkinson and the rest various other English cutlers. All of them except 1 are very unusual in various ways between the physical form or provenance. Some really interesting handling on them.

The katar has razor sharp edges and a swollen tip. 2-bar grip helps keep it straight. It feels like an extension of your forearm naturally. This would fuck someone up even today but it gets ludicrously thick for a knife at the tip.

I just took a new group photo. As far as I can tell it's the first time I've taken a big one since 2017. It's not every single knife/multitool I own but nothing significant is missing. The Sebenza is about 10 years old and has been my most-carried knife for most of that time, but I got the Leatherman Arc as a gift last month and have been carrying that almost every day since.

Collector/researcher. I do clean most of them to at least non actively dangerous territory. Some I clean further. I have a major research project that has to come first over anything beyond basic steel wool for any of these unfortunately. I did just win an 1892 patent solid hilt rehilted for 1895 that had a shitty varnish on it. Removed that and it is basically in mint condition. See picrel.

The handles for most of them on average are 14-18cm long. The longest to the right there actually has a ~101.5cm or over 40" long blade but only a 14cm grip. Sometimes they can get longer depending on officer tastes or nationality [IE French grips are usually shorter like Italian grips, but sometimes the pommel could be really long and elaborate]. Currently using a shitload of #0000 steel wool on the rightmost while renaissance de corroder on the unetched sections. Grip is gutta percha and I believe paint got on the blade and grip. Gonna take a lot to clean it, the hilt is solid orange aged rust but the blade is coming along at least.
>>
>>65540054
I'm interested in them but the ones that appeal to me are always expensive, and they're harder to justify because I'm in a state with retarded laws about carrying them. (Even with my CCW.)

>>

They were absolute trash, made from budget ball bearing steel for a premium price. But last i heard they were releasing some in magnacut, and at the time their priced for magnacut were competitive. I'm not sure what hey are doing now, but don't pay $300 whatever for a little fixed blade made of ball bearing steel.
>>
>>65540160
Yeah, and I've also got a decent hatchet that can do a lot of what you'd want a fixed blade for, better in many cases. I've always wanted a nice "bushcraft" style fixie or two but I think for most purposes I'd rather have the hatchet (and maybe a Silky saw) for heavy work and a folder's fine for the little utility stuff.

Nasty is subjective and perhaps a meme. They did send a condescending and chastising list of "steps" to educate thier user (me) on how to keep my knife sharp (so they wouldn't have to). Note, this was my edc and a working knife, i was younger 20 years ago (more like 30) and the Endura had a molded Zytel pocket clip, if that dates it for you. Also note, a $60 pocket knife was a huge investment (for me) back then and likely relates to $597 in today's Biden Bux.

Here's a close up of the wootz katar. The 2 bars arent the most comfortable but it really makes it point naturally. Wootz appears in a way that makes me think this was a shorter bar that was stretched during hammering the way the grain goes down the length. Probably paid a bit more than I should have for it but I really liked the 15th century European Gothic hollow grinding to the blade. Plan is to clean the outer profile of the blade as much as I can, maybe sand the inside/fullers, and send it to someone to re-etch the inside. Sanding AFTER etching removes the grain but the higher grit/clean the steel is before etching, the nicer it will look.
>The horizontal 'bar' the blade is attached to is part of the blade itself mechanically, I think cleaning that and having it re-etched to show the pattern would look cool. It is brazed/welded at the corners to the other 2 bars which I am cleaning but dont think are wootz.

Is the micarta brown a good one? Is CPM CRU-WEAR a good blade? Is this the best and the coolest combination?
>>
>>65546608
Cru-Wear isn't stainless. It will rust. But otherwise, it's similar to Magnacut in edge retention and toughness. Cruwear and Micarta are paired up because both will take on a patina and change color over time. This one has fuller, more sturdy steel liners because of the flexibility of the micarta, so it's incompatible with a lot of aftermarket scales.

Forgot to mention, it is about 1/2" thick at the tip. Insert catgirl joke here. This ostensibly is a hunting one, combat ones are apparently smaller. About an 8" blade. Not sure how much hunting was actually done with a punch dagger, could be like the ostentatious hunting daggers of the Imperial age in Europe but knowing the wildlife in India maybe it legit was useful for a tiger attack I dunno. That being said, getting a gut stab with this as a human even today would probably be super fatal.

length and actual value
a 500 dollar knife isnt going to be significantly better than a 50 dollar one any task you tried doing with the 500 could be done with the 50 dollar knife.
a 50 dollar sword is a wallhanger or sword shaped object.
if you tried cutting a 2x4 theres a decent chance it snaps in half or bends. the 500 dollar sword wouldnt be destroyed by the same action.
for 500 you have a real sword.
>>
>>65551908
>length and actual value
$50 will get you knives of any sensible length
Knives worth thousands of dollars are made with expensive materials simply to make them more valuable
>a 50 dollar sword is a wallhanger
Whereas, like you mentioned, a $50 knife will generally do what you need it to. Sounds like knives are an exponentially better investment.
>if you tried cutting a 2x4
you'd be better off using a saw or an axe rather than a knife or a sword and you wouldn't have to get anywhere close to spending $500 to do the job with a worse tool
>>
>>65551979
The point of cutting an 2x4 with a sword isnt to cut the 2x4 its to have a target. A 2x4 isnt a good target but its easy benchmark.
>>
>>65551986
I don't know anyone who uses 2x4s as sword targets, they're almost exclusively used to test durability AFAIK and if they are using them as targets then you can use knives in the same way

>a 500 dollar knife isnt going to be significantly better than a 50 dollar one any task you tried doing with the 500 could be done with the 50 dollar knife.
Yeah, but a Sebenza will last and all the little parts that may wear out in 100 years are replaceable and CRK does it as long as they are still around.
>>
sebenza price is a tough pill to swallow but it just has things other knife makers refuse to do
>beautiful hollow grind that's a dream to use
>simple design for eays tear down
>big bolts with deep drives that seem very hard to strip, unlike the tiny T6 screws everybody else insists on using that love to strip
>all components highly stainless
>100% made in USA
all together these things aren't neccesarily $500 of value but it does make ownership really nice and there's not really a comparable package anywhere out there
>>
What's special to me about the Sebenza is the bushing pivot system; in that the 3 posts that hold the knife together: pivot, stop pin, and backspacer, are all the same exact thickness, and the scales are completely flat so that when you crank them all down, the blade moves freely, though snug and tight with no play. They lap the washers by hand to achieve it.
It's so much more of a manufacturing accomplishment than knives where you adjust the pivot to where you want it and loctite it.

I stripped mine by using it. I think the green one would look cool with some patina, but the stainless blades are probably very prone to bending like the modern mercator ones are.

Nice
Mine seems prone to chipping, but hopefully it will get better as I uncover new steel on the edge

I have a thousand knives but I found this one on a beach when I was eleven and inexpertly cleaned it up then got a little better as I grew up. Recently got a real pro to make the sheath for it and he tided it up a bit but left some of the fuckups I did to leave it with the character. One of the best things I own.
>>
what do you guys think of this blade profile for edc?
it doesnt look too thick like these usually are. looks good at slicing (90% of edc usecase) and still has good piercing.
i also think it just looks better desu. 10in oal
>>
>>65558671
why have this over any 3 inch drop point if the point is "edc"
>>
>>65558711
idk ab 3in 4in seems good though
its longer swept length and stronger than a typical profile in sideways bending and if hit bone i think.
idk if the lesser width means anything but atl it looks nice
>>
>>65557516
that's cool as fuck
>>
Got one of these for $20

Cope. A $50 knife will never be a $500 knife. The machining will never be as perfect, the deployment will never be as smooth or satisfying, it will have blade blade play or lock tolerance if it's folding, it will never be an object that you can simply marvel at for what it is. The only thing it will do is cut just as well.

Some people make $500 in a day. So what you're saying is "anyone who pays a day's wage for a knife they'll have for the rest of their life is an idiot". You could have come up with a less roundabout way of telling everyone you were poor my guy.
>>
>>65559687
a 500 dollar knife can easily turn into a 50 dollar knife if you let a crackhead bash concrete with it for 5 minutes
>>
>>65559687
I make over $500 a day. I'd never buy a $500 knife. The reason a knife costs $500 outside of genuinely time consuming custom work (hand carving/engraving) or precious materials is solely because the manufacturer wants to make $500.

No, you knife does not have tolerances so amazing it takes $500 to make, not when there are firearms with vastly more exacting tolerances being made and sold cheaper.
>>
>>65559713
What other companies make a pivot bushing system like the Sebenza has?
>>
>>65551367
True
But some people just want a really nice knife
>>
>>65558671
I would like to carry a big ass knife for edc, but I don't because of all the attention it would attract.

High-end knives are like mechanical watches*. They're expensive mainly to be expensive in order to show off to other people who recognize them. Yes, there are aspects that make them more costly to manufacture, but in most cases it doesn't add anything from a practical standpoint and the difference in retail price is wildly out of proportion to the difference in manufacturing cost. Yes, a fine Swiss tourbillon is a work of art, but as a device for measuring time it does nothing that a $20 quartz watch can't do.

*There is one minor difference: high-end mechanical watches are actually difficult to make. Most modern high-end knives are not even remotely special.
>>
>>65559713
"why come the thing cost more than the materials"
>>
>>65559859
Because someone will pay for it, that's all.
>the tolerances!
Are again not particularly impressive compared to firearms which are cheaper.

Now, if you want your knife to be the best fidget spinner that's not a balisong, so actually second best fidget spinner, I'm sure it's great.
>>
>>65559835
>*There is one minor difference: high-end mechanical watches are actually difficult to make. Most modern high-end knives are not even remotely special.
Which is why a high-end knife starts at $500, while a high end watch is five figures.

Chris Reeve was a tool and die maker for the army in South Africa. He was into motorcycle racing and now builds furniture; all kinds of mechanical stuff.
You know those crappy hollow handled Rambo survival knives? He recognized they were crappy, so he made his own, the blade and handle out of one piece of metal. He invented the frame lock. One of his employees had formerly worked in the aerospace industry and said Chris Reeve's tolerances for knife parts were even tighter.
He's up there with Sal Glesser and Al Buck as top innovators of modern knives, although CRKs are much higher quality.
The way a Sebenza fits together is how I would intuitively think a folding knife should be on the inside, but pretty much every other knife isn't put together this way because it's harder than it looks to produce such a knife. It's harder than I thought it would be to simply pop the pivot bushing in the blade because the fit is so tight, and I never dealt with such a tight fit between mechanical components before. If try to insert it at any kind of angle, it won't go in because there is no play. My pivot screw came loose because of no loctite and there was no change in the action. You can take it completely out, and the action remains the same. It just keeps the pivot barrel in place. A Spyderco and basically every other knife relies on the pivot screw being tweaked just right for the action. 10 years ago, a PM2 was $115. Now, it is $210. In 2016, a large Sebenza was $410, now it's $500. It's admirable that they aren't charging $1,200 for a Sebenza these days. Other knife companies are catching up to CRK, but aren't quite there yet. And Benchmade charges almost CRK prices for Benchmades.
I'm just into knives. A knife nerd. And I appreciate the mastery and art of it. I use a laptop every day, but I don't care about computers like nerds on /g/ for instance. I'm just not "into" them. They spend way more money than me on computers.

but the longer i look at it the better op picture knife looks.
i want it to be accessible with thick gloves (motorcycle) and still concealable that’s why maybe i lean to fixed blade appendix carry but idk

OP knife would only be good in a defensive scenario if the entire grip was coated with sandpaper to compensate for no hilt, even then it would tear up your pocket fabric if not in a holster
its nice because it still has a sharp tip and slicing. the knife doesnt look obese like others

is there any knife like OP thats still concealable with a hilt and easy to access with gloves? please guys im defenseless.

It has a deeper cutout on the other side for lockbar access and you can rest the index finger in there. And with the flared end, it has more hand protection than some knives.

One thing that's good about smaller knives is being able to put the butt of it in your palm for thrusts. This Delica also has a flared end near the blade.

What are the knife carry restrictions where you live?
>>
*Delica
>>
>>65564816
What's it like to carr point down? All my knives are point up.
>>
>>65564822
both of those pics are tip up carry
tip down carry is fine, and can even be easier to get the blade out than tip up on larger knives
the drawback with tip down is if you have a weak detent, it can open up in your pocket and stab your leg

>>65564732
>>65564756
bruh
>>65564816
ngl i might just get a spiderco clone i just cant get over how they look. it has more hilt than normal but the thick spine with the hole cutout might make it hard to pierce with
