>kills rats and pests for fun and will do it for hours for no monetary compensation
Are terriers better and more efficient weapons than guns for getting rid of unwanted animals?
>>
It depends completely on what kind of "unwanted animals" and that invariably still includes you as backup, with a gun

There is nothing more lethal to critters than the domestic cat. Dogs are just too inneficient as murderers. Cats kill so much they are basically walking war crimes.
>>
>>65536873
It's literally the opposite of what you're describing. Cats are at best a good deterrent but unlike terriers they get bored or full and decide that's it for the day. A terrier will snap a rats neck and go looking for the next one.

Not to sound inhumane but you're not supposed to feed barn cats much if you want to get the most out of them

Little cougar actually, them and house cats are literally built exactly the same, the only difference is one is the size of an adult human.
>>
>>65536884
Cats are more efficient in the sense that dogs get sad if you ignore them while cats don't really care. You get less out but you also put less in.

I've had border collies since I was a little kid and every single one of them has delighted in digging up and killing moles and gophers. Once they get a taste for it, they will happily spend hours lying in wait with their ears pricked up listening for something to move underground so they can yank it out.

There was a guy who was injured and found by a mountain lion which dragged him back to a cave and the man said that it would hurt him if he didn't fuck it every day.
Everyone thought he was just delirious but the park rangers were uncomfortably shuffling around saying "yeah actually that can happen".

Cats have caused literally dozens of species to go extinct. They’re second to man in terms of ecological disruption.
>>
>>65537071

Friendly reminder that feral animals should be destroyed on sight to protect native ecosystems. Yes, this includes charismatic animals like cats and dogs and horses. Kill 'em all.

In the land of the blind the man with one eye is king; cats get schwacked by birds of prey as well as canids and even larger felines. They're mesopredators unless anything otherwise inclined to eat them has already been eradicated.

>>65537651
>Cats have caused literally dozens of species to go extinct.
All of their known extinctions were directly underwritten by human activity and in most cases occurred in ecosystems where the extinct species had no endemic predators of a remotely comparable niche and the introduced cats generally had no predators whatsoever.

You'll honestly feel better getting another pupper. It sucks to lose dogs but its sort of part of the life cycle and there's one or two out there who'd have a great home with you
>>
>>65536884
>get bored or full
nah, 99% of prey that domesticated cats catch they don't even really bother eating, assuming their owner is feeding them regularly, they just do it for the love of the game.

and them being a "deterrent" is kind of an understatement.
cats are on patrol, day and night, across their entire territory, which often extends out further than your house (if they are an outside cat)
the smell or sound alone of cats deters mice and rats to an incredible degree, indirectly reducing rodent population numbers by limiting the amount of food they're brave enough to go out and get.

Nah canines lost a ton of ecological niches to felines back before humans ruled the world. Humans fucked it all up, but cats were doing fine without them which is more than we can say for dogs. Wolves were probably next in line for cat-based extinction before humans entered the meta and domesticated them.

Yeah they’re absolute apex predators. We’ve introduced lots of foreign species to unprepared ecosystems yet none have directly wiped out whole populations as much as the domestic cat. Zebra mussels are annoying but they’re fish that can eat them. Nothing eats cats.

Except the chinese, but the problem with introducing chinese to control the cat population is that nothing eats the chinese.
>>
>>65539143
>Nothing eats cats
Large enough birds will but those aren't so numerous, especially where humans live because we not create environments that they enjoy.
>>
>>65538080
The value of cats as rodent control is that they do it without needing training or commands. Dogs require training and specialized breeds for rodent control but can also rapidly outpace a cat when actively hunting.
>>
>>65536937
It's inhumane only to the same people who can't slaughter their own meal.
They have food, plenty of it running around in rural areas. To spoil them with free food, which their brain isn't built for is a sin against their species, which only a selfish Human would commit.
Tbh in rural areas don't even feed at all, your shelter is more of value than you realize to them.
Also if any cat "lover" finds it cruel or like anon said, inhumane, you should do a bit of self work.

Bruh. My old calico used to hunt rats at night, eat their heads and then present the dead headless bodies neatly lined up on my welcome mat. Often it is the entire rat family of 5 or 7 rats, arranged from biggest to smallest. She'll also hangout on tree branches and ambush low flying pigeons from above, where they least expect it.
>>
>>65544890
I had a cat that used to do that, but with blue jays, this cat was tiny. Some of them are just born without the part of the brain that makes you feel fear.

Cats feel fear fine but why would they fear jumping from a tree at a bird?
Even if they miss they'll be fine and just run back up the tree.

Caniformes lost niches to cats sure, but most caniformes are plantargrade and wolves are digitigrade. Cats used to fill that niche with running hyenas before the berring land bridge opened, and managed to get exactly one running hyena across (extinct for half a million years). Wolves on the other hand came across the other way, and now they're on every continent except antarctica and the only surviving running hyena is the aardwolf that's surviving on termites. Theres currently no cats left that can contest wolves in their niche, and its not for lack of trying
