Retard here. Just seasoned my cast iron pans and it got me thinking. Can you season your weapons to become more rust proof? Does raising steel to 400 degrees Fahrenheit ruin the heat treatment? I feel like no, since people run their barrels till red hot in some cases.
>>
Doing anything will likely make them less rust proof.
>>
They come preseasoned from the factory
>>
>>65544427
>Can you season your weapons to become more rust proof?
sure, but polymerized oil doesn't do that as well as actual treatments like nitriding
>Does raising steel to 400 degrees Fahrenheit ruin the heat treatment?
It might
>I feel like no, since people run their barrels till red hot in some cases.
That is retard shit that ruins barrels. No, it's not ok to do that. "but the gun didn't explode yet" is not really a good starting point for evaluating whether something is a good idea. Youtube meltdown videos and their consequences have been a disaster for the midwit race.
>>
Anything is a dildo if you're brave enough
>>
>>65544427
>Retard here
Yes. Don't do that. Oil your guns like the normies instructed us, trailblazing on this kind of thing doesn't pay
>>
>>65544427
All seasoning is is polymerized oil right? So just rub linseed oil or something on the metal like you would on wood. I imagine dry parkerizing would soak it up like a sponge
I may start doing that actually
My house is pretty humid
>>
>>65544427
>wypipo don season dey guns
>>
>>65544504
SALT AND PEPPER IS ALL IT NEEDS, talking about needing half a fucking can of McCormick seasoning for each fucking burger.
>>
>>65544427
linseed oil or tung oil on blued finishes when storing stuff long-term or going innawoods wet and humid is not uncommon, in fact it was a standard approach back in the day, and traditional gunsmithing restorers still do it.
>>
>>65544527

Wierd, but not suprising.
>>
>>65544559
>Rangoon Oil
Not everyone is British
>>
>>65544559
isn't rangoon oil just some weirdly thickened kerosene? the old bottle I've seen is much thinner than standard gun oil. kerosene is still fair lubrication in parts of canada that hit -30 C and below in the winters
>>
>>65544638
Distilled light oil/heavy kerosene from the oil springs in Rangoon.
Best oil for the cold in Canada was Stag's frigidized. Company has been dead for about 6 decades now though.
>>
>>65544427
>Can you season your weapons to become more rust proof?
Yes, that's what finishing like bluing and parkerization do.

Lodge sucks for the first 3 months…then it works like any other. Its all the same material
>>
Cast iron tastes too long to heat up and all I cook are eggs
>>
>>65544804
lodge is heavy as fuck compared to a same size wagner. though yeah both work for cooking.
>>
>>65544899
Stop searching for immediate gratification or strt microwaving your shitty eggs.
>>
>>65544903
heavy as fuck is good for some things and bad for others. You get a nicer sear on meats with those heavy ass cast irons.
>>65544899
it takes like 5 minutes to heat for eggs, you're just a nigger.
>>
>>65544427
Essentially if you want fire, danger and 3rd degree hell burns- hot bluing with molten salts. Or the old wait a while carding and browning process which ends up being boiled
There is also parkerisation and cold blues, both of which are pretty quick
But the real pain in the ass is that bare metal, perfectly clean surface you need for any process and cast iron just isnt the same as steel, there's a degree of porousity which lets it soak up surface oils and the heat properties are wildly different. So the same process on frypans and using it on steel just isn't really applicable

>>65544504
I got your zesty spices, stand over there
>>
>>65544899
lmao zoomers are hilarious
>>
>>65544925
More of an energy use/ efficiency issue. I have an IR range which I already don’t prefer and is the worst for cast iron. I just don’t make enough food for the amount of heat it takes to bring 6oz of eggs to 160°F
>>65544998
I was pathetically inept before it was cool
>>
>>65544899
almost within two minutes it is hot af on induction.

>>
>>65544427
yes american made 1911 in the colt factory were deep fried, and in the golden era of colt, they were double dipped in tallow for that deep royal blue.
As for carbonia blue they where hand polished to a mirror finish then all greased up in sperm whale oil and given an oven baked finish to sear the whale oil.
Lugers p08 where instead slow seared with canola oil for that rust bluing.
As for glocks they are teflon coated and nothing sticks to them.

yeah i know what a food borne disease is you dip, i also don't get sick from food because i know how to cook. are you 12 or something? did your mama never teach you how to cook properly?
>>
>this thread
I understand why our society needs suffocation warnings on plastic bags now
>>
>>65546415
>did your mama never teach you how to cook properly?
If you're counting the minutes while frying eggs, it wasn't your mother that taught you to cook. That would be wikihow or some shit
>>
Yes. Baking loaded magazines makes them function better too. It molds the mag to the bullets. They need to be live though so the weight and everything is right.
>>
>>65546466
still better than "fry an egg for 8 minutes otherwise you'll die"
>>
>>65544427
OP these niggers I swear.... ok...
Heat the gun to 500f for an hour. Douse it in COLD Singer's sewing machine oil mixed with 10z of 10w-30. Scrub the shit out of it when it cools down and you take it off the heat right after that. But only use a plastic brillo pad looking mesh-weave scrubber. Then pressure wash the gun. I have no idea what this does but you seem to want to do it and it sounds like I know what I'm talking about.
>>
>>65545885
>>65546237
My simplest troll yet. Cast iron threads are too easy.
>>
>>65546489
I was referring to the "fry eggs for 8 minutes or you'll die" with my remark regarding "counting the minutes while frying eggs"

ah my bad then

Cast iron vs carbon steel?
>>
>>65546545
i got a pan like the one on the right that i got for like 10 dollars, and it works fine as a daily driver. if i prepare it, i can even make crepes on it without a problem
>>
>>65546545
light and fast response vs heavy and heat retention

i use cast iron for meat and carbon steel for vegetables
>>
>>65546545
/ck/
>>
>>65546545
almost all the carbon steel I see new on the market now are just aluminum sandwiched between a lower layer of magnetizable steel and upper layer of carbon steel. pure single layer carbon steel is either too expensive new or you have to buy vintage.
>>
>>65546426
Too bad they can’t read them.
>>
>>65546691
How is laminating shit lile that cheaper than just . . . . a peice of sheet steel? makes zero sense
>>
>>65546691
Pretty sure Ikea carbon steel pans are 100% steel
>>
>>65548658
I also wondered that. Jew/Chink math
>>
>>65545369
>only 8 minutes
This retard don't enjoy a full sear on his eggs.
>>
>>65548658
because retards are buying carbon steel pans thinking it'll work like teflon pans and will heat instantly and be nonstick, never even bothering to season it properly or wash it properly or maintain it. so they sell essentially thin carbon steel laminated aluminum pans with an induction compatible layer too on the bottom so it'll work like all the other pans these retards are used to, and yet they still leave retarded reviews about the surface rusting or food sticking........... I don't know, it's chink jew math either way.
>>
>>65549231
>with an induction compatible layer too
So, steel/iron?
How do you think induction stoves work?
>>
>>65549325
there are types of steel used in cookware that are not magnetizable and not induction compatible. a lot of german stainless steel prior to the wide availability of induction cooktops are not induction compatible.
>>
>>65549325
>>65549335
and what I meant is that the carbon steel clad stuff on the market have a stainless steel magnetizable layer for the bottom, rather than carbon steel bottoms. Only the top is a carbon steel layer, and the middle layer is thicker aluminum.
>>
>>65549340
Interesting, but do you have any proof of this claim? Because I've almost never heard of anyone selling "carbon steel" pans that aren't just one solid chunk of carbon steel pressed into shape.
>>
>>65549350
just search carbon steel clad pans and you'll see plenty, it's very common out of china generic brands and ones you see sold in big box stores, but "reputable" european or american brands you'll probably find only one or two that are carbonn steel clad.
>>
>>65549363
So just don't buy weird no name pans, not hard, as mentioned earlier Ikea pans are generally pretty decent for the price.
>>
>>65549377
yes the ikea carbon steel are great for beginners to mess up with and learn how to season and use carbon steel. fantastic in fact. but they really aren't that good overall and don't hold seasoning well compared to obviously significantly more expensive pans that come polished and well-seasoned already out of the box. the reason is that ikea coats it with some kind of plasticized spray, and you have to BURN that off or polish it off with something abrasive before you can even start to season it multiple times to make it ready to use like a good carbon steel pan.

Lodge is $45 for the 12" pan on Amazon. It's all steel and US made with a lifetime warranty. They'll get you one tomorrow if you live in the US. What third world shithole are you stuck in and why haven't you left it?
