Nope. Thatโ€™s just about perfect. Thank you.
>>
>>65544715
>>punches with a .50 cal anti materiel round force
This isn't how most depictions portray it. It's about as lethal as a autogun, which are somewhat more lethal than modern firearms when made well.
>>500 shots per mag
depends on which author you talk to but I personally think the 40-100 (really more like 40-70) cell capacity at autogun lethality is the optimum range of shots narrative wise. It's still good logistics and shot capacity but still lets autoguns have their niche of multi ammo and highly rapid fire without that being a massive fucking meme.
>>

Why yes, I do.

>>65544715
>why is the las rifle so mocked?
Because it's primitive for the standards of the setting. It's the equivalent of bringing a Mosin-Nagant to a modern battlefield, it does the job sure but be honest, you would want to upgrade if you can.
>>
>>65544865
>It's the equivalent of bringing a Mosin-Nagant to a modern battlefield,
No, that would be literally bringing a mosin-nagant, which you'd probably find people using on some random imperial world.
Or more to the point THE FUCKING ORKS AND THEIR SHOOTAS.

Trying to shit on the guard has gotten too hamfisted, the lasgun might be humble but its nowhere near that obsolete.

lmao no. Think back to the context of the time: these ideas were invented by British nerds in the 1980s Cold War. Lasguns are a L1A1/FAL/SLR rifle with a space magazine of 10x the laser bullets for logistics. That's why they have slower ROF than a autogun like the G11 or M16.

Kind of agree. Its the temu version of a whole lot of IPs GW couldn't get the licence for (SMs being literally the stormtroopers from a failed SW bid); which would be fine if such a facile setting were treated as such, but 40k discussions are always so granular and serious. People often pay lipservice to it being satire, but I don't think that's actually been true in decades. Certainly orks being football hooligans isnt a particularly current social commentary, but even if it was, neither GW nor the modern playerbase seem to engage with the setting with the understanding that its just a thatcher-era /pol/ shitpost in model kit form.

It wasn't then, either. The lead writer for the first few editions of 40k has shot it down. It was intended as a big anything goes setting where you could use whatever models or armies you had and it had a sense of humor, but you weren't supposed to find the whole thing funny.

People say the whole thing is a parody or something because people cannot take anything seriously anymore. Everything has to be one big gag now. Everyone has to tug on their collar and say "erm, who writes this crap?!?!?".
>>
>>65544715
> .50 BMG like terminal effects
No anon. The typical lasgun can't do this. They mostly have been described as around typical .30 cal rifles with a few special high power ones at their highest yield reaching close to .50 BMG. Also most have somewhere between 50-100 shots at their medium setting, maybe at low power you can but unless you're fight a hoard of like children or ratlings why?

>why is the las rifle so mocked?
Short answer being that basically every other army in 40k has armour, biology, or both that can shrug off lasfire and weapons that literally make it look like a flashlight. What makes it effective is the sheer number of guardsmen all shooting at you, and the tanks and artillery those guardsmen come with.

>Orks are 8 feet tall meat slabs who can endure a lot of punishment and not quite die

What's the story on normal power armor vs these things?

Basically irl everything gets penetrated regardless. What penetrates this in 40k vs normal human power armor?
>>
>>65553991
>What penetrates this in 40k vs normal human power armor?
Tabletop a SM is now 5, previously 4 toughness, with a save of 3+ and two wounds.

A cadian weapons squad firing an autocannon have two attacks (roll twice), strength nine, so they have bonus to-wound-roll since they're over the marines toughness 5 (previously a bigger bonus since it used to be double), AP -1, so the marines save goes from 3+ to 4+, and damage three, so if it hits them and it wounds, they die. So, like, with a small arm you're very unlikely to kill them, but once you get to HMGs and autocannons they need to be wary, and when you go up to AT munitions they need to not get hit or they'll suffer.

Astartes, when not being wanked, are deadly because they're solid like 7/10s at everything, so you can put them up against any enemy force with an equivalent force and have a solid chance of their victory. Of course, it's a marine protagonist universe, so most characters are marines who recieve plot armor.

>It's the equivalent of bringing a Mosin-Nagant to a modern battlefield
The Mosin-Nagant doesn't only do the job, its a weapon that's still as effective as it goes. The problem with lasguns is that they are underwhelming compared to what the competition brings, which is explosive mini rocket-like bullets, dissolving projectives in the form of gauss, plasma which is the bigger and meaner big brother of laser in 40k, and so on. With that said, the lasgun does have a a bit of an ace: In Gaunt's Ghosts, a guardsman cooked the battery of his lasgun to kill a single chaos space marine by overcharging it, which caused the commissar of his unit to give him a long lecture after ruining the weapon

This is a great reference for dunking on science fantasy supersoldiers dreamed up in the 1980s, but I have to point out that its military merits are typically exaggerated and misunderstood; because most people posting it don't appreciate the military context. Look at the units of fire, the timelines involved, the armor used, and finally the logistical train.

If you use 2x more ammo than a normal day of combat to focus fire on stationary targets in the open for hours with famously minimal armor, you can kill almost half of them. Contrast that with trying to shoot at moving tanks with heavy armor! To the military eye of the time, this was basically a white flag or a blatant cope from the dumb artillery era's last fans when confronted with the modern guided weapons of the 1990s. Their world was dominated by tanks because of these statistical relationships, and now suddenly tanks were deprecated by guided weapons and air power, and they were trying to pretend they could do it too.
>>
>>65556344
They can though, a 155mm shell doesn't cost shit and you can saturate an area ahead of the target. Can they maneuver? Sure. Can they maneuver out of half a grid square reliably? Not so much.
>>
>>65556379
Tanks driving at 45mph cross one and a half grid squares in one minute, anon. In typical Eastern Euro terrain for the Cold War, tanks could have physically overrun that test artillery battalion before it finished the first quarter of its firing schedule.

While completely ignoring that Heavy Stubbers (spess heavy machine guns) do 1 more point of damage. A lasgun is similar to Stubbers/Autoguns which are just modern guns. Hotshots and hellguns have always been depicted as notably much stronger than regular lasguns and are designed for fighting armor, which lasguns aren't. These ones are unusual in that they aren't fully plugged into a backpack like the regular ones, but they're still distinct weapons from regular lasguns.

A one-size-fits-all template, while sufficient in some if not most cases, doesn't account for variations.

While a lasgun may work well against smaller organic beings, how well will it do against say necron warriors with their self-repairing necrodermis armor?

We actually have an answer to that in an indirect way. When comparing the damage of a DAoT volkite gun(think of a lasgun on steroids) performed exceedingly well against fleshy targets, but was considered inferior to boltguns against armored foes.

Yeah, the aquilons have special magazines they use for jumping so the wires don't interfere with the drop. After they land(and clear out anyone lurking on their LZ)they have the cable connections to a backpack generator like standard hotshots(you can see one of the aquillons plugging his in after they confirmation kill the pathfinders).
>>
>>65560626
That's not a magazine, it's a battery, galvanic rifles use electromagnetism to propel rounds, not a powder charge. You can see it in Darktide, they reload through the top of the action with en bloc clips like a grand. Hence people calling it a space garand.

The imperium has drones for days, they just usually take the form of little floating skulls or lobotomized convicts that have their arms replaced with heavy bolters/heavy arc rifles/plasma cannons.

You've got an entire world waiting to unfold buddy. Start with Liddlehart's post WW2 take on atomics for the tactical vibe then do Barringer, then Northedge-Donelan for the background, or you can skim Herman Kahn. And keep in mind Dune was written pre-GWOT. It was Swords of the Caucauses (or modern Ukraine), not The Management of Savagery.

I leave you with this famous quote from Lt. Col. John Paul Vann: โ€œThis is a political war and it calls for discrimination in killing. The best weapon for killing would be a *knife,* but Iโ€™m afraid we canโ€™t do it that way. The worst is an airplane.โ€

In science fiction, they could do it that way.

Everyone forgets that use of nuclear weapons (House Atomics) was strictly forbidden by treaty, and enforceable by the Navigator Guild. The blast caused by shield/laser interaction is indistinguishable from a nuclear device being detonated, and since both parties involved wpuld blame the other, there is the imminent risk that the Navigators would simply say "fuck all of you", refuse to provide space travel services, and both warring parties wpuld see their entire fiefdoms starve and die in isolation. The only reason Paul Atriedes got away with using his house's atomics was that he specifically used them only to target to ring wall, and he himself was sufficiently prescient to be able to disregard the threat of the Navigators withholding services. For anyone else from any other house, it would have been dynastic suicide.

Not really. He specifically, intentionally acted in accordance with existing rules of warfare. He also seized control of the single spice producing planet in the universe at the same time, so he had the guild by the balls. Even if the Navigators had tried to cut him off, Paul had the means and the will to destroy all the spice and the means to produce more. He only played by the rules to maneuver into a position to where he no longer had to.

>>65560637
The AdMech slap things onto STC tech all the time, there's nothing stopping them from slapping a stock onto that thing unless it's a pattern derived from a genuinely 100%-intact STC printout, but such a thing doesn't exist. Although I guess it would be be appropriate to the setting as there's a certain amount of dark humor in having the only intact STC be of a stockless lasgun.

Also 90npercent of the guards documents are to put down rebelling PDFs/governors that are getting too big for their britches. Against most of those, which are usually even more poorly equipped than the guard, lasguns and flak vests are more than enough. Then you have the even more poorly equipped worlds that may not even be at industrial revolution level tech, to them the IG's gear may as well be magic.

>Also 90npercent of the guards documents are to put down rebelling PDFs/governors that are getting too big for their britches
No? Most guardsmen are sent into the giant meatgrinder wars. And even the 'rebellious planets' aren't exactly a walk in the park for the average trooper.

I don't know why people are so insistent on making life in the guard way better than most sources ever depict it as. They're entirely disposable meatshields in most cases. Even elites like Cadians get thrown around like fodder by Command.

>>65566351
Yes, that is what most engagements for the guard are. They don't get stories written about them because "And then the guard showed up and steamrolled the locals with almost no resistance" doesn't make for a very interesting story. Is guardsmen life easy? No easier than life in any other military that ever existed, but that whole average life expectancy of 15 hours shit is not the norm.
>>
Needs a Cawl pattern Lasgun, basically the Lasgun is obsoleted and given to planetary defense force units, Arbites and regular militia while the standard IG grunt gets effectively a slightly better Hellgun while Stormtroopers get improved human sized boltguns that does the same damage as standard sized Astartes ones

Or even better IG grunts get Volkite weaponry just like their predecessors
>>
>>65567010
Votann sort of have that in the hylas autorifle. Just get Cawl a working example and he could probably reproduce it, like those primaris reiver masks that are clearly knockoff versions of eldar howling banshee masks.
>>
>>65566405
>Yes, that is what most engagements for the guard are
Crazy how that's not reflected in almost any of the lore.
>They don't get stories written about them
Because it's not actually where a majority of guardsmen go, whether pre or post rift.
>but that whole average life expectancy of 15 hours shit is not the norm.
The munitorum manual specifically states that the average guardsman is expected to die within his first six months after being recruited into the guard. Not on the battlefield, from the moment he gets tithed.
>No easier than life in any other military that ever existed
Definitely a lot harder.
>but that whole average life expectancy of 15 hours shit is not the norm
15 hours at the contact line with many enemies of the Imperium is pretty reasonable, actually.

I don't understand the obsession with 'reasonifiying' the Imperium. Life in the Imperium is brutish, short, and outright cruel, and so is life in the guard. A guardsman is nothing more than meat for the grinder unless he's part of some elite unit or under a particurally competent commander. They're not a gothic version of the UNSC.
>But it's not reasonable that they'd survive!
Wasn't called the time of endings because things were going well.
>>
>>65567127
Here's the imageboard tax.
>>
>>65567127
>Not reflected in the lore
Ah yes, just like every eldar farseer ever has only ever gotten huge amounts of eldar killed, yet they are somehow still respected advisors to every eldar leader. I repeat: the stories where everything goes off flawlessly for a given faction don't get written about because that doesn't make for a compelling narrative. Just like there are a million worlds in the imperium that are all tithing to the imperial guard(minus those earmarked for space marine recruitment)but we only ever hear about the same dozen or so regiments. No one wants to hear about the bumfuck primus regiment that went to some uninhabited paradise world and then stayed there and became the PDF.
>>
>>65567154
If you want to think of the Guard as a more edgy version of standard sci-fi army than you can, you're just wrong. Most guardsmen are sent directly into conflict zones where they are needed, and they are needed because guardsmen drop like flies and their lives are totally unvalued by their command. Sorry that impedes on your self-insert fantasy or your GWOT larp projection.
>>
>>65567169

This clearly doesn't make any sense, there are veteran guard units that serve in tons of campaigns, some even disband and settle conquered worlds. Theres clearly enough of a survival rate for unit lore to be passed down, guardsmen having kids, etc. I guess Gaunts Ghosts/Tanith First and Only don't exist.
>>
>>65547867
That's PDFs of Feudal Worlds.
You gotta remember that IG is not the only "normie human" fighting force in the Imperium
>>
>>65567471
>Theres clearly enough of a survival rate for unit lore to be passed down, guardsmen having kids, etc. I guess Gaunts Ghosts/Tanith First and Only don't exist.
Yes, there's guardsmen who survive 20+ years. There's veteran guardsmen who survive even longer. It happens. It is not average. Even most Cadians die, they just do the weeding out early on with whiteshields.
>>65567404
'Scale' means that the relatively small suppression forces are in fact the minority compared to 'oh fuck there's a giant rift in the galaxy everybody needs to fight demons' or 'another ork warlord is bearing down on twelve sectors', yes. There were more soviets riflemen on the frontlines fighting the germans than there were in the rear cleaning up partisans.
>>
>>65568954
As for unit lore, a lot of them are flat-out reconstituted from small veteran cadres or flat out from nothing. The Cadian 8th was reconstituted many, many, many times, for instance. Some regiments have more of a direct link, like vostroyans, who do reinforcements, but most serve until they die.

as for resettlements this explictly is not something most guardsmen get to do. happens, again, it's a thing that's noteable, but most will never live to see it. Should've put this with the other post but whatever.
>>
>>65568962
I really should learn to put everything in one fucking post, but it's noteable that this has not always been this way. The Imperium was decaying on every single level since the Heresy (or the war of the beast if you want to be contrarian). The guardsman of M41 is a lot worse off than the guardsman of M34. You can say it's not sustainable, that it doesn't work, and that it's not possible for them to have survived with that, and it's all completely true. Just as their automation and technology gradually failed them and they relied more and more on brute labor, they relied more and more on brute manpower to win wars, which naturally resulted in a much higher casualty rate.
