How are the tanks doing in Ukraine?
>>
Russia just blew up a animal shelter in Odessa and a Tu-95MS Bear crashed in Amur if you're curious.
>>
>>65548993
raped by drones, more on the (3x more)russian sides than ukranian though.

>How are the tanks doing in Ukraine?
by numbers quite well
>74 Leopard 2 transferred
>21 confirmed destroyed, 1 captured, likely ~10 more hit or destroyed but unknown
generally considered to outgun any T‑72/T‑80/T‑90 variant and much higher crew survivability
Ukraine has said themselves it's (one of) their most effective tank(s)

the main explanation for the highish losses is that they use them so much and combined‑arms enablers (which Leopard 2s are designed around) are missing

also worth noting
most confirmed Leopard 2 losses are from the 2023 offensive where they just got blown up by anti tank mines
>>
>>65550933
Fascinating, as it's been brought up before. I was curious on how tanks were performing in drone warfare and assumed they were being bullied. But I didn't assume an outright doing away of tanks so I image either side has a time and place on where to activate them
>>
>>65551079
>how tanks were performing in drone warfare and assumed they were being bullied
they kinda are
that's why you rarely get to see new drone videos of tanks getting blown up, mostly APCs if any

Russia still uses them whenever, but with cope cages
Ukraine mostly at focused advances (not that loses would be any lower there) or defensive

drones also aren't the "end" of tanks
depending on the model and attention of the crew, it'll take dozens of hits to destroy or even just stop a tank
if you're mindful on where you use them, with some defense layers, tanks are still completely viable and even necessary

Leopard 2s are most likely not used as spearhead in assault though
>>
>>65550912
Based on that graphic the ratio is about 500 to 1.
If you mean ratio of fielded vs lost then Russia had ~10,000 tanks in 2022 and has lost 4,400 or 44%.
80 Abrams have been sent to Ukraine with 25 lost or 31.25%.
>>
>>65550912
Can you not do math?
>>
>>65551202
>has lost 4,400
That is a bit much isn't it?
>>
>>65551272
I default to Oryx because of the autistic levels of detail they put into everything.
They have 4,441 visually confirmed tanks.

https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-documenting-equipment.html
>>
>>65549426
Druid country
>>
>>65551272
That's the absolute lowest number possible. The real total is likely significantly higher (losses which cannot be visually confirmed)
>>
what is the point of tanks anyway ?
I get that it used to be the ability to bring heavy and accurate firepower with the troops where they needed it, as well as engaging enemy armor, all that while protecting the crew.
Now with drones you get all of that for such a low cost, FPVs can recon and destroy threats well in advance of the guys on the ground, while recon drones get you non stop surveillance.
Using tanks literally make no sense anymore.
>>
>>65551406
Completely useless is too strong. I can still see where in certain areas tanks can impose a threat to enemies
>>
>>65551406
wrong, you are retarded.
>>
>>65551406
>Meme answer for retards
It's a heavily armored vehicle that can engage and destroy any level of enemy armor at any practical range, and can also do the same against fortified positions. Like a heavy hammer, it is not the best tool against every nail, but eventually you need it.
>Serious answer for actual discussion
Nigga it's an armored fuckoff-huge cannon on treads how fuckin cool is that, everyone wants that
>>
>>65551406
Mobile field gun with enough armor to operate close to the infantry to support them. Primary job is to make the thing that infantry doesn't want to approach not exist anymore.
Without some major armor meta development the effectiveness of EFPs is likely going to split the role in two different evolutions. Lighter faster disposable gun cars and larger guns with further range so they can have more stand off (at some point though this just becomes an SPG).
>>
>>65551470
But why bother when drones can do the same job for for so much less.
Would you prefer to deploy 4 tanks or 1000 FPVs ?
Which one will do a better job at wiping out any threats you might encounter ?

>>65551485
>Nigga it's an armored fuckoff-huge cannon on treads how fuckin cool is that, everyone wants that
Yeah that's about the best argument, woks well for 10yo but a lot less if you actually have to pay for that shit, or worst if you actually have to be the one in the tank ...
>>
>>65551513
The best way to understand the use of a tank is to think about the evolution of needs that lead to this point.
>Infantry encounters contact behind a wall so you want the shell the wall with HE. You bring a towed field gun but it's really only got a front armored plate and the enemy is shooting at your gun crew so they can't fire the cannon.
>make a metal box around the gun crew so that they're safe from the machine guns shooting at them and they can fire the cannon. But now the towed gun is heavy and hard to tow.
>put your armored gun on a chasis so it can drive itself forward to travel with the infantry.
This is the evolution of the MBT concept not the actual development history of tanks.
>>
>>65549009
Rude.

Wasting resources on quadrupeds when there's not enough food to go around is bad strategy and the Russians are actually helping the war effort.

Cringe that the Russians can't manage to not destroy their own stuff all the fucking time. It's like they're a comedy villain.
>>
>>65550918

Always remember that Abrams is a ballerina not a sprinter.
>>
>>65551562
I'm not stupid I understand why tank were needed
drones can do exactly what you describe
>Infantry encounters contact behind a wall so you want the shell the wall with HE
>they call an FPV which has been on standby a few hundred yards back
>it take about 30 sec to arrive and the operator know exactly what to hit because he has been monitoring the situation in real time
>target is destroy without risking any tank crew or risking million dollars worth of vehicle
they are literally doing this right now in Ukraine

but I guess we should keep spending billion and risking lives because it doesn't look as cool

With many hedgehog tanks taking 30+ drones to kill a MBT throwing darts is still the most effective way to kill armour.
All that's changed is we need to develop point defence systems for them so they can keep doing what they do best.
Also all the videos of guys throwing mines with grenade fuses through windows, with a tank you can do the same thing from 5km away.
>>
>>65548993
>German tank range: 500km
>Berlin to Warsaw distance by road: 475km
hmmm......
>>
>>65551585
>it take about 30 sec to arrive
This is why nobody takes droneniggers seriously.
Sorry tanks aren’t obsolete, kid.
>>
HOW MUCH LONGER CAN THIS WAR POSSIBLY GO ON?
>>
>>65548993
Despite all logic, the Leopard 1A5s are still in operation.
>>
>>65552881
Putin can't accept a peace that doesn't come with enough gas fields to pay back the Russian oligarchs that lost billions.
Ukraine can't accept a peace that costs them their gas fields without having a third world economy and being easy picking for a future Russian invasion.

The only way this ends is with Swan Lake followed by the new Russian president blaming Putin for everything and pulling out.

I really don't want to see Nork tanks in Europe on behalf of Russia since Russia doesn't deserve the the DPRK spending lives in their behalf much less armor that took generations of labor to build up.

On the other hand, i really want to see a reinforced Pyongyang Army Corps lead by the 105th Armored division smashing the ever living shit out of someone because it would be fucking awesome to watch on TV.

.
>>
>>65552997
I sure would love to someday see in the news that Best Korea attacked Russia and took Vladivostok.
>>
>>65553062
The Norks still have a few schekels that they can wring out of Russia before that happens
>>
>>65553062
I've been gaming it out for over ten years, the general consensus it that the DPRK would beat the fuck out of Russia in the Pacific East. I've made threads about it every new years for over a decade.

DPRK vs Russia is more or less Russia getting raped by a woodchipper. Unless the DPRK started the fight of course in which case Russia is fucked beyond belief.
>>
>>65553077
>The Norks still have a few schekels that they can wring out of Russia before that happens

Russia doesn't have the money, they will get the 50k troops and the ammo and the KN-30s but that's it. The DPRK does not accept money unless it is in the form of Gold bars, machine tools or multi year megaton agricultural contracts.

If the DPRK was willing to accept paper currency or promises they would just print them themselves.
>>
>>65552997
Why is it so comically huge
>>
>>65551280
>default to Oryx because of the autistic levels of detail they put into everything
i thought they are quite a bit behind because of time constraints?
something like a year ago they had >1k hits / photos in their backlog
not sure what's the current situation
>>
>>65553081
>machine tools or multi year megaton agricultural contracts
which is exactly the reason why we still see Norks every now and then
Russia can supply that

also I think it's process knowledge as well
there are multiple known cases where they had Russian manufacturing managers / experts go to best korea and help set up / optimize factories (likely as part of the defense deals)
all pretty mundane stuff
like one was a paper mill in unsan county
still significant because it helps best korea to modernize very quickly to an efficient economy
>>
>>65553100

>assault barns
>overweight way over spec which kills their suspensions
>engine overheating

those merely illustrate how niche tanks are now. Simply built because they have the hulls sitting around, doing nothing. Crude, disposable solution trying to get assault meat closer to its target before they get droned (again). I doubt they even issue main caliber ammo to them anymore so they don't kill everybody as soon as the first heat round pierces the barn
