>the sound inside the trench is so amplified a hydrophone can hear the sound made by storm above surfacewould it be worth it to be a sub listening station down there?
>>65550567Why not make a giant submarine base instead?
>>65550567Someone should add the Oceangate next to the Titanic
>>65550598That's a great idea.
>>65550567Not in a trench. Too many issues, pressure being one of them. Sitting at the bottom of a canyon they would not be able to triangulate the source of the sound which pretty much defeats the purpose. Also, trenches are spots that are seismically active. Potential for underwater avalanches etc.

>>65550726>>65550731Make it unmanned and flood the entire interior of the assembly with inert gas to equalize the pressure?
>>65550764Black Stormy or Regular Stormy?
>>65551100Anon, "inert" does not mean what you think it does.
>>65551132It isn't 'a gas that does not readily undergo chemical reactions with other chemical substances' as i thought? What do you think that means?I specified 'inert' in the above context instead of just saying 'gas' to protect any of the sensors internal electronics. You could use any type of gas to pressurize the proposed sensor, i would think you would chose one that had the least chance of harming any of it's internal systems over a long period of time.
>>65551146Oh, I thought you meant "inert" in the sense of "incompressible", because why else would you specifically mention that? It's clear that you don't put any corrosive gases in there. And even then, how are bathyscapes pressurized anyway? I thought the human space were "decoupled" from the outisde.

>>65551167The Weiss site doesn't say but i can't imagine something so expensive doesn't have non reactive gas inside it. I would presume they would use whatever inert gas has the largest molecular weight to prevent it from leaking and that it was a trade secret of some sort. They incorporate Helium release valves since it being so hard to contain means it can also infiltrate the housing under pressure:https://weisswatchcompany.com/blogs/weiss-journal/pressure-and-wristwatcheshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helium_release_valve
Wouldn't you just need a listening device tethered to the bottom that periodically rises up closer to the surface to transmit? Apparently some bits of the Marina Trench are not considered safe for untethered submersibles due to debris partly from equipment for monitoring subs going in and out of Guam.
>>65551210I hate the bizzarros.
>>65551146argon is often used to purge pressure vessels from air containing moisture.
>>65551582I am not knowledgeable enough to know if ionization would be an issue with the sensors electronics especially regarding argon's ionization behavior at extreme pressure levels, however it is used at atmospheric pressures as shielding gas for electric welding and the voltages in lamps is much higher so it might not be a problem.
>>65550726Damn, what a smooth brain question. Flood the internals with a liquid. Pressure is now equalized.

>>65551642Wikipedia tells me directional hydrophones require an internal baffle filled with a gaseous medium to function properly. It needs the difference between the acoustic impedance of water and air (or other gas) in order to function with any degree of precision.
>>65551673Just use a liquid other than water
>>65551691Apparently it has to be a gas. Any liquid will be too close to water, they have to be as dissimilar as possible. There are people on /k/ who know far more than i do about this, hopefully a squid will show up.
>>65551659>what is oil
Besides pressure, communication would be another issueAt the depths we're talking about, you can't really communicate wirelessly - even placed relatively close to your own shores, any such device would require literal hundreds of miles of wire. Let alone if you want to listen in on "non-permissive environments"

>>65551658It really is because they tend to be immense and travel exceptionally long distances underwater. Several have occured off the east coast USA decades ago that severed trans-Atlantic cables. There is an incident I recently read about that happened in 1986 off the east coast USA. Crew of a USN ship that were on decks below the waterline heard a low frequency rumbling noise that slowly gained volume and built in crescendo over a period of several minutes before ending with a loud explosion deep underwater. Those on the upper decks heard it too but not as vivid. Anyways the crew was pretty concerned and thought something happened on the ship and it was later in the day when the captain did an announcement saying that what they heard was an underwater avalanche sliding off the continental shelf down onto the abyssal plain.
>>65551659thats what the sonar array on destroyers is flooded with
>>65550698on top of that, sound propagates in the ocean in strange ways, at extreme depths you will only hear what is directly above the trench, the temperature and pressure gradients cause the sound waves that are traveling sideways to refract upwards
From what I understand the average incline of the Mariana's trench is like a 1:15 pitch which is less slope than a handicap ramp. It's funny that everyone in this thread is picturing some sheer escarpment.

>>65551673>>65551691>>65551709That isn't a problem, you just have to incrementally fill the cavity with more and more gas as you descend. The net pressure on the membrane will be zero.

>>65554114The White Whale swam before him as the monomaniac incarnation of all those malicious agencies which some deep men feel eating in them, till they are left living on with half a heart and half a lung. That intangible malignity which has been from the beginning; to whose dominion even the modern Christians ascribe one-half of the worlds; which the ancient Ophites of the east reverenced in their statue devil;—Ahab did not fall down and worship it like them; but deliriously transferring its idea to the abhorred white whale, he pitted himself, all mutilated, against it. All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby Dick. He piled upon the whale’s white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart’s shell upon it.
