if power armor became a thing, what would melee weapons designed to counter it look like, would it just be shaped charge on a stick?
With a few notable exceptions in places that favored fabric armors, melee weapons have not typically evolved to defeat armor by piercing it at its strongest point but instead to be slipped into gaps; to control and exhaust the opponent at distance until the preceding type of weapon can be used; or to bludgeon or otherwise damage the foe by means his armor cannot protect him from. HEAT on a stick is somewhere in that mix so it's obviously not an unreasonable solution, but I'd expect to see something smaller. A HEAT pig sticker might even be small enough that it doesn't concuss the fuck out of the wielder when it goes off. Plus 40k is full of boarding actions in human scale ships. You always need to be able to shank the other guy in a hallway that's not big enough for the two of you, or a trench, etc.. Longer weapons are for taking the battlefield, and you've got ranged weapons to do that so it's fair to say that whatever you get will probably be sidearm sized.
