If the Musketeers were from a time that championed "the musket", (pic related) then what would the accurate MODERN EQUIVALENT be? - This might be the perfect time to coin a new one, which would be swell.

>Vietnam, Japan, Korea, and China continue using old matchlock system till c. 1900
Why didn't they update wheellock, miquelet lock/flintlock, and tubelock/percussion action?

They can't locally replicate some of the more clockworky old firearms since they cant into the metallurgy for springs.

That said: Chinks & Viets did fiddle around with imported flintlocks from India & Europe in the 1600s-1700s but they remained toys for aristocrats & rich people. Japan did not for some reason until the Black Ship Incident.

To be fair, many European armies had to be forced to drop the flintlock in favor of the percussion cap.

Springs are one of those weirdly esoteric technologies that if you don't already understand how they're made, you can't replicate them through reverse engineering, no matter how closely you study a finished example.

As I understand it the elastic properties of a spring come from how the metal is tempered rather than how it's shaped so you can copy how a spring looks as much as you like but it wont perform the same unless you actually make it out of the exact same type of metal as the original, which many cultures lacked the knowledge or capability to do.

It is reliable, but making it from mercury is poisonous.
