Its strange that the SAW has stuck around for so long, and yet seen so few revisions. Like think how much the AR has changed in the same time, going from plain A2s to riced out URGIs, and then look at the SAW which just had rails bolted on. Even in SOF units they dont have any kind of FF handguards or low profile dust covers and lightweight receivers, just the same guns as regular units unchanged since 2007. Even the M240 got a new lighter receiver eventually, but the SAW gets ignored for some reason.

A lot of the tri rail could be deleted or substituted with M-lok, making the front of the gun slimmer and lighter. Having the bipod mount to the handguard rather than gas tube would prevent it from changing POI. The top rail could plausibly be several millimetres lower on the dust cover, which would remove a decent amount of solid metal. Or it could stay at the same height and be skeletonized like a LAMG rail. The gas plug could simplified, since its designed to be adjustable but isn't post-PIP; so it could just be replaced with a screw. Theres a lot of little changes you could make that would improve it.
