It's kind of hard to contract malaria and have a Makarov blow up in your face as opposed to drinking vodka, putting on a gas mask and going innawoods.
(the IMFDB page for Far Cry 2 should be required reading for /k/)
>>
I miss it.

Little to no modding. Stalker would have been forgotten in a few years without AMK and later oblivion lost; and of course all the zoomershit that followed in the years after like misery, anomaly and CoC. FC2 only got a couple of script edit mods, playing around with health and damage values; so while stalkers many frustrations were quickly tweaked away, FC2s remain to this day. You never see civilians outside the closed rooms of the malaria missions making the world seem dead and empty, you only see the two factions fighting a bare handful of scripted times in the whole game, in spite of early game ragtag mercs being replaced by professional western PMCs at the midpoint, this never results in enemies being tougher (some actually wear body armor, but its just for looks and doesnt protect them) or smarter or giving any sense of greater coordination. You're the only one who ever uses the .50 rifle or MGL or Unimog guntruck. M2s and Mk19s start showing up, but otherwise the land rovers you face in the first half hour are the same vehicles you'll be facing in the final areas (Ive always though that several AML-90 escorts would have made a great final boss of the convoy missions), and aside from a single scripted event in a later mission, AI never use mortars (should have been a mortar position at every outpost, and taking too long to wipe a checkpoint should have resulted in artillery being radioed in). Mods could have fixed all of this, but without an sdk FC2 will always be more niche than stalker.

I loved the fire mechanics but never really found it to have replay ability like STALKER.
>>
>>65552742
ai unimogs do show up but they're rare. though that might be a mod addition, it's been a long time since i've played vanilla to compare
in general though yeah spot on

Remember playing it as a kid back on the Xbox 360. Don't know why it constantly crashes though on the PC version.

Pretty much the first game I played start to finish. So much nostalgia for it. Things seemed… simpler back then.
>>
>>65552710
I played Far Cry 2 when I got back from Afghanistan sometime around 2010. It was the last time I was super immersed in a game. I even got teary eyed when my first companion died and felt the sting of betrayal at the end. No other game has hit me as hard since.

Ive taken multiple jobs in Northern Mozambique

>Hang out at the bar in the evenings with private security dudes
>met one former SAS officer but mostly ex SADF types who are racist af, but spend thier r&r chasing local tail

>Naughty boys up north start getting upity
>freaking Wagner PMC rolls through town
>all speaking Russian so I can't get any stories off them.
>only vodka left in town 10x the usual price
>Really wanted to get a patch off one of them but missed my opportunity

>stopped on my way to the airport, going 64 in a 60 zone
>cops want to throw me in jail
>usual song and dance before paying a bribe
>needed the bribe money for the airport
>airport security hassles me to no end cos the cops stole took the last of my cash

Northern Mozam has an exquisite Far Cry 2 flavourful imo. It's just hot as fuck

I played all 3 STALKER games without mods and loved them. Meanwhile I eventually got fed up w with FC2 bullshit and quit playing. Game have no real substance, I don't think mods can fix it, unless mods turn it in fully different game

Jackal was a cool character, but the missions and areas got repetitive, especially with enemies respowning.
>>
>>65552710
what a diamond in the rough (heh). game has a lot of good elements but so much bad shit that prevents it from coming together to be really great. its also funny to look back at a time when ubisoft still cared about making interesting games

I'm in this camp. FC2 is cool, but it's not enough. I ended up enjoying FC3 a lot more, but because of its narrative elements, not its /k/-suitability. I'd also disagree that STALKER only lives because of mod support, I was memeing about SoC on 4chan soon after it came out, it's how I found out about it. And I played the entire trilogy as I went, loved it, and didn't even realise shit like Gamma and Anomaly existed until a few years ago.

Did the freeplay mods' popularity help popularise it for others, that made them meme, that made me meme? Probably. But I was in love before the first mod for SoC was ever conceived of. The only oldfag title I am willing to claim is the oldfag of the Duty vs Freedom wars. I picked my side over 15 years ago and I'm STILL as passionate about bringing the Zone's miracles to the world and using STANAG as I was then. FUCK DUTY AND YOUR GAY LITTLE BDSM OUTFITS! FREEDOM FOREVER!

Far Cry 2? I liked the fire mechanics. That about it. Being an African mercenary is kinda miserable. I'd feel compelled to visit the Zone if it was real, but war torn African shitholes are real and I'd rather stay at home. You don't even get a gay BDSM outfit on your way in.
>>
I am this close to almost deciding to plan to develop my african merc simulator that I've had in the back of my head ever since MGSV wasn't that
You start as a guy arriving in <unnamed african country> with contract to do something for money
Your camp starts as a tent and cookfire - if you want food you need to go and hunt it
The region is being fought over by several factions, and you can take on missions for any/all of them
The game is permadeath, and you can switch between your deployed soldiers at any time - if all your soldiers are killed, game over
By taking on missions you earn more money and fame, which enables you to expand your camp into a base, and recruit more soldiers
As your influence grows you control more territory
You have full control over the policies in your territory - want to run a slave farming/mining state? Go for it, but expect international condemnation
You also manage your base and your army - equipment, vehicles, artillery, uniform, training
Once you have an army you can deploy them on missions and fight big battles to conquer enemy territory and crush another faction - you select where/how your troops are deployed and set simple objectives for them
Eventually you conquer the whole place and establish your colony
You can also choose to stay one guy and live in your tent, off the land, and save enough money to retire

Seconding this.
FC2 always sucked ass. Only nostalgic Xbot-zoomers are now trying to glace it up. It's literally one of the earliest examples of the notorious "Ubishit", with brown+bloom visual cancers, constantly spawning nigger jeeps as your only companion, and flat as fuck campaign as a whole that handholds you through the whole experience.

Also FYI, I was way above the age of 20 when both of these games came out, so zero "nostalgia" here. I'd much rather put another 1000+ hours into any of the three STALKER games than waste my time on any modern-day FC.

it sucked as a game but had the purest of sovls. The most realistic story they ever made. I hope they will remake it one day or at least make another game based in Africa.

>I hope they will remake it one day or at least make another game based in Africa.
They won't, because killing niggers became "le bad" thing right afterwards. The amount of butthurt Resident Evil 5 caused in the AMERICANS before its release was already legendary, and it was nerfed and white-washed (literally) to appeal to the first generation of Twatter-dwelling social justice warriors.

The only positive thing about that mess was that it gave us Sheva, the hot negroess. But nowadays, even making hot female characters is frowned upon.
>>
>>65553938

Playing FC2 on Infamous is like playing a somewhat arcadey FPS but with the HP fragility of playing Arma. Shit becomes ridiculously hard.

>Struck dead by the vileness of his own shirt

>>
>>65553971
Play it with Dylan’s Mod or the other realism mod. Some encounters only become survivable with good grenade usage and your buddies are far more likely to die the longer a firefight drags on. Shit is horrifyingly brutal in a fun way. Plus the game has sporadic fighting between the two militias, makes things much more chaotic and creates opportunities.

I think Far Cry 2 doesn't get enough credit as possibly the first game where you can come out on the wrong end of a fight then set the area aflame so nobody wins.

Its not that bad. Learn to kite, use trees as cover and instead of being tactical with tap firing headshots from cover, just aim for the waist and let recoil do the rest. The obvious impulse is to hang back and pick your shots, but the game doesnt really support that, whats rewarded is aggressive guerrilla tactics with constant movement. Its also worth noting that shotguns are garbage, anything that can be done with a shotgun can be done better with a 1903, which is incidentally the best sniper as well (perfect hipfire, while the SVD behaves more like you would expect a videogame sniper to).
>>
Nothing else captures the experience of far fry 2. Nothing. It's unique despite being copied for 15 years after it's release because it was never successfully replicated. The feelings of solitude in a hostile alien land that is also indifferent to the player is only present here. The strange weapon selection, the intentional limits and weaknesses inflicted on the player, combined with the story of a doomed conflict that ends with everyone dead is cool too.
>>
>>65552710
You can larp Stalker by going to anywhere in the rust belt with a slavshit rifle. The closest we have to the veld would be the high plains, and camping out there is boring as hell because there's nothing but grass.

But I feel you, I'd love another Far Cry 2, but I don't trust anybody to make it well.
>>
I honestly don't get the nostalgia this game has here. Visually it was a muted, brown-washed mess, the shooting was solid but nothing special even for the time, there was basically no friendly AI, you could tell there was a faction system that was ditched at the last second, you had janky shit like those convoy missions where they literally just drove in a circle letting you destroy them, the "friends" you had would just enter into a revive cutscene and bail as soon as you were back up...I just don't get it. It didn't click for me in 2008, and it sure as shit doesn't click now.

I guess the fire mechanics were pretty neat.
>>
>>65555153
its really just the premise of being a soldier of fortune in war torn Africa that lets people's imaginations fill in the blanks. i'm kind of in between, I also very much want it to be good for that reason but also completely agree with you that its flaws are just too severe to make it consistently enjoyable
>>
>>65555153
I don't get it either. It's not a good game; it is filled with frustration mechanics, bad AI, poorly implemented gameplay systems, shallow story that receives too much focus for what it is, bulletsponge enemies, ivory tower game design, and the kind of jank that doesn't make for funny or entertaining moments.
>>
>>65555153
i see the whole malaria bullshit thing was so awful you blotted it out of your memory
>>
>>65555173
the way i look at it FC2 stumbled so FC3 (the first half anyways) could run
>>
>>65555181
Its grossly overhated, its a short fetchquest that shows up a handful of times and you have half an hour between screen blurs even if you choose to ignore it.
>>
>>65555187
it was a stupid, pointless nuisance that never returned to the franchise again because the devs got the hint
>>
>>65555187
You forgot to mention that it's integral to the story. Malaria pill missions are story missions.
>>
>>65555193
Right, because of all the performative bitching about it. To me its not so different from being irradiated in stalker or bleeding in tarkov, something you obviously have to deal with because youre dying. maybe the malaria would have been better received if there was a persistent icon in corner of the screen that said "hey dumbfuck, youre sick", but because the blur was so spaced out there wasn't much sense of urgency to it so people would let it get bad and then cried because how could they have possibly known. In all seriousness, the malaria missions have the same trappings as every other mission; drive across the map through several respawning checkpoints to another location where you shoot some people; people fixate on them because theyre timed but if they werent enjoying that gameplay loop; they werent enjoying the rest of the game either so its all moot. Like I said, overhated.
>>65555198
Well yeah, you're sick, hence why you didn't just shoot the jackal in the first 10 minutes of the game and go home. You dont have to do them, if you do the main quest fast enough your sickness resets at certain points.
>>
>>65555193
>the devs
were almost completely different teams, none of the leads from 2 were on 3 except for the former multiplayer level designer. 3 was mostly made by people with experience on assassin's creed iirc
>>
>>65552710
STALKER is /comfy/, FC2 is dogshit.
>>65555225
> To me its not so different from being irradiated in stalker or bleeding in tarkov
Because you’re a dumbass.
>>
>>65552710
Condiser this, vidya has no bearing whatsoever on using firearms or being in combat or learning about that than you can learn to ride a horse by playing skyrim. It's a fucking game with no relation with reality at all. YOu can;t learn to shoot or much about maintaining a firearm in combat from playing it anymore than learning to ride a horse by playing skyrim. In this context your entire spew is ultimately nonsense. Appealing though it may be to a teenage boy that the being gud at some video game means they are good at guns or some powerful dangerous dude with skills and experience it's utter nonsense.
>>
>>65555575
Look at this retard who came to rant about games in the first game related thread he say. Fuck off dumbass.
>>
>>65555225
>ts not so different from being irradiated in stalker or bleeding in tarkov
Uhhhh those are a result of player actions ..
>>
Creeping through the dry grass with an mp5sd and an m79 to ambush African commies is fun as fuck. I don't know how people don't have fun in fc2.
>>
>>65552710
Most people who claim to like Stalker like the aesthetics and don’t actually like the game, at least not without such heavy modding that the base game functionally doesn’t exist. And why would they? The base game is a complete sloppy mess of nonsense.
At this point it’s just culture. You just don’t GET, surstromming, anon.
>>
>>65552710
farcry 2 just nails the 'something is constantly going wrong' feel in combat. it's beautiful.
