Specifically for recent peacetime "vets", not worn-torn PTSD guys from GWOT. What's it been like adjusting back to civilian life? Can you still relate to your friends back home? Did you cut back on drinking? Shits been whack since getting outta the corps last month; I miss the clowns, not the circus.

I have no friends and don't feel like I need any.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CORPORAL SHEPHERD :D

The circus is what made you bond with the clowns, and thus by extension why you miss them.

I honestly don't know. I left that shit behind me, I've got kids and a woman an d I still love history and I like antique weapons. You either cop on and forget about bad shit you saw and killing or you act like a spastic and cling to it. 'Friends' matter less as you age, they are mostly a big thinh for people in their 20s. Most people only have a few when they grow up.
t. saw three months continuous heavy urban combat and shelling and can barely rememebr any of it and that's fine

I don;t drink, tried to like it many a time but never enjoyed it much so just rarely drink, maybe 2/3 beers a couple of times a year with others it's not an issue and never has been. Alcoholics are scum, every time and that has fuck all to do with having been in combat a lot, in fact based on having to listen in silence to drunken liars crying and lying about having been in combat, I think it's moore that a lot of alcoholics lie about it for free drink. They just sound like retarded sacks of puke to me it's not even worth pulling them up on their lies.Neither is having been in combat 'special' or 'important' it's just something that happened. I never had any massive bond with the people who died fighing beside me and don;t get the whole 'band of brothers' nonsense although I can feel sad about the ones that were there for the cause and died if I think about it long enough, which I am not going to do because it's maudlin and pointless. It was a job and we put outselves there and for that it is ultimatrely entirely our own doing.

I got so used to being told I was about to be stabbed in the back by the Brutus in question that it cost me a job because a junior member of the team threw me under the bus to save his own skin. I was totally blindsided by the lack of transparency in people betraying me, and it continued to fuck me over in my next job because in the army I'd AT LEAST get the head shake or wince that let me know someone had left a fuckup for me to deal with, and I'd be able to walk in and instantly identify what the fuckup was, but of course now everyone hides their crimes and I have to go sniffing them out or else be blamed for them.

Being able to verbally abuse people is something I miss because it lets you really, unmistakably communicate your absolute displeasure or seriousness. I can send these little cunts 10,000 emails and just get a "Oh, didn't I see it. Oopsie." then get blank stares from then on. Honestly, I also miss being able to beat the fuck out of my colleagues if they really, intentionally fucked with me. Everyone knew the score, no one snitched, and the beating was a message, not the start to a feud.

I joined after college rather than right out of highschool so military never felt like real life, i did my 4 years treating it as a game
I can see how people who joined without ever living on their own could struggle with having all the structure that they are used to disappear so suddenly.
It's easy to fall into a hole that you will struggle to dig yourself out of later. You just need to make some life goals and hold yourself to your own standards now, dont become someone you wouldn't respect just because no one is there to stop you

Are you using the GI Bill?

>Neither is having been in combat 'special' or 'important' it's just something that happened.
Knew a war correspondent who had been to all kinds of crazy places and nearly died on more than one occasion and did it for years and this was his attitude. His sentiment was that it's delusional to think it's special because there are lots of civilian normies in war zones who get caught up in it and didn't have a choice in the matter. It changes the perspective a bit from soldiers doing war stuff.

People get weird about war and think it's like some massively multiplayer online fantasy game. But that goes away fast in the aftermath of a car bombing and there's pieces of people blown into gibs splattered around and your job is to take pictures of it. He was like yeah if you want to know what that's like then go buy some meat at the grocery store and then drop it on the sidewalk and take pictures of it. It sounds nihilistic but I don't think he was really a nihilist. But I think it goes to what you were saying about people thinking it's "important" in some weird way.

I'm one of those peacetime "vets." Got out of the Army ~6 years ago. It was weird at first, took some time to get used to just being able to do whatever whenever without any guidance. Worked a few bullshit jobs trying to figure out what I liked doing. Eventually ended up going back to school with my GI bill and I'm pretty happy doing what I do now (EMT). I kinda just look at it like highschool II, keep in touch with a couple of the guys but we've mostly gone our own ways. Don't waste your benefits. Talk to someone with the VA and use that shit up, it's there to help you reestablish yourself as a normie. Don't become retarded and get into drugs just because you can now, that's why so many of us end up as homeless schizos. Take a roadtrip or something, spend some time with yourself and figure out what kind of man you want to be moving forward.

depends on how you spent your time in the military I guess. I did a relatively useless job that had opportunities to do cool or satisfying things but I chose to be a terminal e4 underachiever retard and got out to start a family. Now I wish I was still in or chose another branch so I could have at least felt like I had more of a sense of accomplishment. Other dudes I know that were like me during our time in don't seem to feel the same way I do so I guess I'm just a mope but whatever
I still keep contact with the dudes I was good friends with but nothing more than a " how have you been" every 6 months
also I drank like a satan while I was in but have cutback after having kids, being hungover with a two year old is not fun

prior navy, ive had two jobs since where almost all coworkers were prior military. my current job is also very similar to what I did in the navy except I get paid more and my bosses don't hate me.

I kinda hate getting into fights but even I want to beat the snot out of people sometimes. So many are used to just being unbearable backstabbing cunts and getting away with it.

Honestly a danger to everyone around them, especially women and children.

considering getting out due to bullshit orders (DA select for recruiting)
anyone have advice? I feel pretty torn up about it because I never really accomplished anything in my career. never deployed, never went to any schools, failed two different selections. actually I feel like total shit. but I don't want to do 3 years of a job I don't want and I'm still really far from retirement anyway.

Dude get out, recruiting is such shit rn it will make you blow ur brains. You obviously have some drive if you went to any selection, let alone 2. Get out and get that disability, then go get a free practical AA degree, my homeboy did Xray and CT scan tech school at a for profit college to skip the wait times in community. Dude is banking $45 an hour shooting xrays and doing CT scans, if he does MRI or learns radiation therapy then he's getting a $10 raise for sure, im rooting for nigga. I got out and did airstreams, worked on wind turbines for 2 years and now im making $38 an hour as a utility solar tech.
Its so much better on the outside, the biggest change is shit will go from 100 to 10 mph. Civilians world is wayyyyy slower, believe me.

>What's it been like adjusting back to civilian life?
The fuck are you even asking? Why do you think it's hard adjusting to civilian life after doing a stint in a peacetime military? It's not. Most of the military is little more than civilians in uniform anyway, it's not like they're fanatics, as most have support jobs that aren't dangerous or even taxing on them.
>>
>>65555381
I don't know I'm too afraid to get out I'm 12 years in and don't want a real job so they keep promoting me and eventually I'll retire.
>>
>>65559407
Ur gonna have to do something when you retire, unless you move to the Philippines and live off your pension or something.
Wait do you even get 20 year pensions anymore?

>>65559597
They let me commission and fly so worst comes to worse I'll find a place to fly for. Its funny how not having an exit plan works out.
