Meme's aren't truth but my whole life the vibe about vietnam was that it was a mud crawling shotgun range tunnel crawling HELL.
Having read a dozen or so personal account books, it doesn't seem more war-crimey or hellish than ugly parts of WWII pacific, and possibly less cold (considering Korea).
So let's rack up the parts that DO meet the legend. Post "The Deer Hunter" bad times in the jungle, where the trees speak vietnamese.
>>
https://history.army.mil/portals/143/Images/Publications/catalog/70-4-1.pdf

This has some stuff. I've read books on: LOHC scout pilots, tunnel rats, UDT/seals, FOB posted infantry, fighter pilot/top gun creation, Jamie Boss on being a mechanic lol, being a mustang officer, being a commissioned officer direct, and "The Things They Carried" about retarded brass in washington, a few more.
There just wasn't any "well the kids crying was annoying so we called in a mortar" or "I bushwacked for a week with patrols trying to find me, then they burned my toes off".
>>
>>65557851
Honestly I think its more the tone of the war setting peoples attitudes for it. WW2 was a righteous strike back against some slant-eyed animals who had murdered thousands of Americans in an unprovoked attack while they were having breakfast. There were shit parts, but nothing worthwhile ever came easy. Vietnam on the other hand was just some colonial security shit that just got dumped on our lap after the French found it too hard to deal with themselves, so we were just expected to fix it for them. We didn't have a stake in it, which I think made people more acutely sensitive to the shit parts.
>>
>>65557869
That's the thing. The WWII pacific was jungle. Mud. Blade like grass. Mortar poundings.
Was it being less mobile? 6 months in the same shit hole is more intense than 6 months in 3 shit holes? Was it media(enstein)?
>>
Maybe another big part of the image was the transition in mental health from "huh you're fucked, here's a bed on a tard ranch" to "well let's look at his psyche like a wrist watch repairman".
>>
>>65557898
>Was it media
Probably just that. The media/ powers went all in on selling WW2, whereas were always ambivalent at best towards Vietnam. It was probably much better to be a soldier in Vietnam than in the Pacific jungle. I mean, certainly. Fighting Vietnamese would be way better than fighting Japs.
War against fascism gets romanticized, war against communism demonized. That's it.
>>
>>65557851
I recall a story my dad told me once, something about how they made a village march into some lake or pond or something and dumped white phosphorus in there with them, so it would burn them on contact with the air when they tried to come up out of the water. I think he said something like he recalled a medic organization, Red Cross maybe, trying to get them out. I don't remember why he said they did that, probably retaliation for getting ambushed or because they were aiding the VC. He said that scene in particular stuck with him because of how fucked up it was.

Wonder what the rock apes tell their offspring when it comes to their service in the Vietnam War pelting both sides

How have you not heard of the orangutan like bipeds known as rock apes that would harass soldiers on both sides of the war with rocks and other manners?

I'd put money on SOME more casual horror than WWII. Alien people, strange landscape full of temple shit nobody understands, conscription (or being poor and no choices) all can add up to even anti war people lashing out in a moment.

I really don’t understand what the big mystery here is supposed to be. WW2 and Korea were conventional military conflicts, with one side facing another. Obviously there were complicated political and strategic factors involved, but you generally had a clear enemy and clearly defined borders. Vietnam was fundamentally different. it was a high-level insurgency that was handled by five presidential administrations, which at times had radically different approaches to the war. As a result there was never a clear, consistent goal or objective.
Then there were the inherent problems of counterinsurgency. the difficulty of distinguishing civilians from guerrillas, the frustration and impotence of wanting to simply bomb everything into submission and the fact that the war became increasingly unpopular at home.
>>
>>65557964
Was it a first-hand account or not? Because it sounds like one of those boomer myths, like the female vietcong sniper who supposedly wounded, captured and castrated wayward little GI's on patrol.
>>
>>65558151
>Was it a first-hand account or not?
Yes, it was a firsthand account, as I previously mentioned. My father is a Vietnam marine corps veteran, and he's not the type to lie about his experiences, but if any of you would rather believe it didn't happen, so be it.

The shit I’ve read about MACV-SOG was actually insane. Units technically had greater than 100% casualty rates and 150 to 1 kill ratios. Larry Thorne had probably one of the most insane lives I’ve ever read. His entire life was basically a suicide mission. He served the Finnish army, waffen SS, and the US military. He hated commies and escaped multiple military prisons.

My friends dad in Boy Scouts was a combat MP in Vietnam. He used to tell a story how across from his HQ was a abandoned hotel where the Vietminh/Montagnard would hobble and torture french pow's in the 40's and 50's. He said he would see figures in the windows and hear random screams when on watch at night coming from there.

I had an uncle who once was ordered to blast a tree full of monkeys with 90MM canister, because they flung shit at his CO's track.

He had a lot of other VN stories but they were typical "army" tanker shit.

Another uncle was a helo pilot. He had an 8mm film cam and filmed a LOT of what he did.
Yeah.
I saw those films.

Apparently 2.75" rockets will punch through a human body without detonating. Also 20MM cannon make things go away.

An American Carroll Alan Ladd said in his memoir that an American army employee got his penis cut off by a Vietnamese woman.

https://desuarchive.org/his/thread/17990193/

Does anyone have records of patients at the Third Field Hospital in Saigon so he can be identified?

https://books.google.pl/books?id=PXY-EAAAQBAJ&pg=PA33#v=onepage&q&f=false

>Another one of our employees ended up in the hospital because he got his penis cut off. The story goes that his girlfriend, who was from Vung Tau, had threatened that if he cheated on her, she would cut it off. She was true to her word. It scared the hell out of a lot of other Americans who had foreign girlfriends that had said the same thing to them. Some of the guys left their girlfriends. The man had to be transferred to the Third Field Hospital in Saigon.

Another American in Saigon during 1960s said that it was normal for Vietnamese women to cut off their lovers penis for cheating and American men were terrified their Viet girlfriends and wives would do it

>From various Vietnamese women, including the one who gave me the résumé of the novel War, I tried to understand how they felt about marriage, love and American men. It soon became clear that although Vietnamese women enjoyed sexual love, and talked about it with candour and even earthiness, they did not see it as any more than a pleasant bonus to a romantic affair or marriage . They were not obsessed by sex , as many Americans were even then , in the mid - 1960s , before the full impact of the Permissive Society . However , Vietnamese women were capable of tremendous rage and even physical violence against unfaithful husbands and lovers . The Americans in Vietnam were obsessed with castration dread ; not the psychological phobia but the actual fear that their girlfriend might castrate them . I heard it said by one American , married to a Vietnamese , that he went to bed each night in terror of losing his genitals . ' He nearly loses " It " was the famous Vietnam Guardian headline over the story about a woman who just failed to sever her husband's penis . This story was related to me by my parents, who were part of a cult like from Wild Wild Country many years ago. There was a guy there who was soon involved in several mafia-style killings, and eventually chopped his wife up, put her body in his trunk, and it showed it to someone, permanently mentally scarring them. Eventually he was put in prison, and the psycho claimed that what really pushed him over the line was an experience in Vietnam where someone got gutshot while the whole unit was pinned down by snipers and he had to spend the whole night slowly hearing the other soldier bleed out and beg for water. Whether the story is true or some kind of psychopath power-lie I couldn't even tell you.

>Vietnamese women, just like American men, are business-minded but not necessarily greedy.
>Vietnamese women are unsentimental; they do not whisper sweet nothings. Nor are they , like the Americans , obsessed and anxious about the act of sex . They can be downright about their physical feelings sometimes to the point of bawdiness - but they are also romantic about their lovers . One girl I knew , who had fallen in love with an officer , told me she used to be whipped by her relatives because she would not marry the rich man they chose . The next time I met her , when she had married her officer , this romantic young lady gave me a very earthy account of how much she enjoyed being in bed with her husband . This mixture of earthiness and romanticism comes out in some old letters I have from a girl explaining how she wanted a co- habitation licence in order to lose her virginity before she or I was killed in the war . I declined this offer in what I hope was a tactful way but I later learned that she had been killed in one of the accidents that are common in Vietnam .

>In the course of the action between 13 and 16 June, a number of men in the small U.S. contingent distinguished themselves by their extraordinary bravery. Lt. Col. William H. Combs, who had been liaison officer with the Chinese 150th Regiment, died of wounds received while attempting to warn units of the 209th Engineers against a Japanese ambush. Pvt. Howard T. Smith took command of his platoon when the platoon leader was killed and the attack stalled by a Japanese pillbox. Smith assaulted the pillbox singlehanded and silenced it with hand grenades. Pfc. Willard J. D. Lilly destroyed an enemy machine gun firing into his own machine gun position. While under fire 1st Lt. Melvin D. Blair rescued wounded and silenced an enemy machine gun. Smith, Lilly, and Blair were veterans of GALAHAD. When his company was pinned down by machine gun fire, T/Sgt. Richard E. Roe of the New GALAHAD crawled forward and at the cost of his own life grenaded a Japanese machine gun that was causing heavy casualties. Fatally wounded, he gave his life to save

There are two kinds of vietnam novels....ones written by low iq draftees who couldnt figure out how to get out of the draft, and those written by professionals. The low iq guys are pretty good feels driven actual stories, but the professionals looked at it exactly like how it was a new era with its own unique challenges and ttps.
Khe Sahn was hell on earth cause it was a siege. Hue was hell because it was close quarters street by street brawl. Tet surprised everyone and even our ambassador was spraying motherfuckers with a swedish K when we assaulted our own embassy, and the infiltrator sappers that got caught got public executions via .38 snub by the chief of saigon police. It was brutal.
But there is a difference in 3rd generation profesional soldier describing reacting to contact and a mechanic whose dumbass LT decides to patrol right outside the fob for booby traps just to say he went outside the wire in 'nam, and if you dobt differentiate between the two youll come away with a really jaded view.
Then there is kovacs and he was a decent Marine but guilt spiralled hard when he fucked up and blued his own dude and felt like he deserved to he paralyzed as punishment. Thats really just fucking despair porn.

Ron Kovic, not Kovacs, my bad.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_R._McKinney

>John Randolph McKinney (February 26, 1921 – April 5, 1997) was a United States soldier who received the Medal of Honor in World War II during the campaign to recapture the Philippines from Japanese forces in 1945. Although greatly outnumbered by about 100 Japanese soldiers, McKinney was single-handedly able to secure a crucial battlefield area before reinforcements arrived. He was presented the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony by President Harry S. Truman on January 23, 1946.

>McKinney enlisted in the United States Army from Screven County, Georgia in November 1942.[1] He served as a Sergeant in the United States Army.

>He fought with extreme gallantry to defend the outpost which had been established near Dingalan Bay. Just before daybreak approximately 100 Japanese stealthily attacked the perimeter defense, concentrating on a light machinegun position; having completed a long tour of duty at this gun, Pvt. McKinney was resting a few paces away when an enemy soldier dealt him a glancing blow on the head with a saber. Although dazed by the stroke, he seized his rifle, bludgeoned his attacker, and then shot another assailant who was charging him. Meanwhile, one of his comrades at the machinegun had been wounded and his other companion withdrew carrying the injured man to safety. Alone, Pvt. McKinney was confronted by ten infantrymen who had captured the machinegun with the evident intent of reversing it to fire into the perimeter. Leaping into the emplacement, he shot seven of them at pointblank range and killed three more with his rifle butt. In the melee the machinegun was rendered inoperative, leaving him only his rifle with which to meet the advancing Japanese, who hurled grenades and directed knee mortar shells into the perimeter. He warily changed position, secured more ammunition, and reloading repeatedly, cut down waves of the fanatical enemy with devastating fire or clubbed them to death in hand-to-hand combat. When assistance arrived, he had thwarted the assault and was in complete control of the area. Thirty-eight dead Japanese around the machinegun and two more at the side of a mortar 45 yards distant was the amazing toll he had exacted single-handedly. By his indomitable spirit, extraordinary fighting ability, and unwavering courage in the face of tremendous odds, Pvt. McKinney saved his company from possible annihilation and set an example of unsurpassed intrepidity.

>Major Douglas Thomas Jacobson (November 25, 1925 – August 20, 2000) was a United States Marine who earned the United States' highest military honor — the Medal of Honor — for his heroic actions on Iwo Jima during World War II.[1] "Private First Class Jacobson destroyed a total of sixteen enemy positions and annihilated approximately seventy-five Japanese, thereby contributing essentially to the success of his division's operations." He was presented the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman on October 5, 1945.[1]

>There just wasn't any "well the kids crying was annoying so we called in a mortar" or "I bushwacked for a week with patrols trying to find me, then they burned my toes off".
Implying 99.9% people who did one of the greatest taboos would talk about it afterwards lol

NTA
1. We absolutely had no obligation to go over there. And we ignored a million offramps on the way, as evidenced by Vietnam being the very definition of mission creep. Eisenhowers farewell address in 1960 specifically named the dangers of the MIC in a warning, and what did we do? Let them talk us into escalation in Vietnam.

2. stop bullying France! They are our (actual) greatest ally
>b-b-but Iraq
Iraq did not in fact have weapons of mass destruction. We were wrong, and the French were right.

Lots of pros hated the war with a depth conscripts could never even get a toe in.
I would recommend
>A Rumor of War by Phillip Caputo
there's a scene I remember where they're about to fight some NVA regiment and another marine is like "huh? I was stationed in anoyher area and we completely wiped that regiment out. 'Totally destroyed'." and the CO says "oh yeah they've been completely reconstituted."
There is another scene I remember they're about to go on this big operation against the Viet Cong/NVA, and they're planning for it, when at the last minute they have have most of their air support taken away because an ARVN general went rogue. And there is a scene where while they're rucking North, jets are screaming overhead above them going South to put down an uprising. And it's a very unsubtle "what the fuck are we even doing here?" moment.

Imagine JFK saying "asking now what your country can do for you but, what you can do for your country" and actually giving everything you have to your country. Only to see the war as unwinnable, the Vietnamese people not even fighting as hard as we did, and boys dying for no reason.
Ever learn about the Pentagon Papers? The big take away from those leaks was that even by the Pentagon's own assessment, we could not win the war the way we were fighting it. Imagine seeing your friends killed while the top brass know it's unachieveable.

No even among the OG pros there was a lot of (often hidden) acknowledgement that we never should've been there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audie_Murphy

>Murphy mounted the abandoned, burning tank destroyer and began firing its .50 caliber machine gun at the advancing Germans, killing a squad crawling through a ditch towards him.[83] For an hour, Murphy stood on the flaming tank destroyer, returning German fire from foot soldiers and advancing tanks, and killing or wounding 50 Germans. He sustained a leg wound during his stand, and stopped only after he ran out of ammunition. Murphy rejoined his men, disregarding his own injury, and led them back to repel the Germans. Murphy insisted on remaining with his men while his wounds were treated.[81]

>hurr durr Eisenhower
MIC spending in 1960 was 50% of the federal budget and 9% of GDP, nearly 3 times what it is today. We are nowhere near that level of spending and raising the spectre of overspending by citing that figure is enemy propaganda designed to disarm the US

Fuck off, turdie

I’m not even a hippie but it wasn’t that hard to achieve this ratio if you’re operating in a free fire zone where you regularly smoke entire villages of old men, women and children

The jungle is marginally shittier. Same asiatic warfare shit though. They both line charge the FOB knowing 8/10 are dead. I think the issue really was recruitment like it's an existential war when it's very plainly not to the average guy.
