During the wars in the Middle East, the SF units were just breaking into people's houses and shooting them point blank, so the 10.3" barrels were perfect for them. However, as we can see in Ukraine, since the possibility of engaging people at 150-250 yards is no longer 0, there has been a push to return to 14.5" barrels.
>>
>>65558825
I think they should stop being a bunch fags and return to 12" 308, that's the real solution and we'd never have to have this retarded debate of barrel lengths with each specific war
>>
>>65558825
Sure but as we move towards hyper velocity ammo, everyone getting 11.5s is becoming increasingly more likely. Everyone could honestly move to 11.5s now with the use of 77gr ammo as it's still very effective out to 300m which is basically the maximum distance you'd reasonably be shooting anyways. Hyper velocity ammo will only make that length better and better. Check my post though I wasn't referring to barrel length but barrel profile, which is very different. G$ makes both 11.5 and 14.5 barrels in their profile as well

I truly do hope that hypervelocity ammo is everything you guys want it to be. So far the 80k PSI ammo that everyone is fawning over is not there yet.
>Everyone could honestly move to 11.5s now with the use of 77gr ammo as it's still very effective out to 300m
No. A 20" barrel shooting 55gr has peak terminal effects up until 300m, a 14.5" barrel shooting 62-68gr has peak terminal ballistics up until 275m, 10.3"-11.5" barrels are terminally best up until approximately 200m (not 300m); a 77gr bullet out of a 11.5" barrel already comes out of the barrel below the velocity required to effectively fragment, so while the round has better energy retention (to fly through the air better), the bullet itself isn't going fast enough to do that 5.56 does best (yaw and fragment a ton making insane wound patterns).
>Hyper velocity ammo will only make that length better and better.
We are already seeing the limits of the new 80k+ psi ammo, they give 15-20% better performance (flatter trajectory, better retained energy) while unfortunately wearing out barrels 50% faster. All the people making and shooting Magnum cartridges have already had to reluctantly accept that this new tech barely benefits them, so we'll only see this tech on cartridges like .308 or smaller.

I see zero need for an M4A2, but I would agree that if such a thing were to occur, the focus should be on small technical redundancies and making the gun more pleasant to shoot rather than gimmicks. Like most peoples wish lists include free float mono uppers and LPVOs, but you dont see army infantry dramatically underperforming in marksmanship against militarys who issue free floated rifles; and while there was a case to be made for a long time that the FSP should be deleted for a suppressor-ready low profile block, Id say with the advent of flow through suppressors that's really no longer needed either. But our procurement doesnt operate on what operationally needs to happen, so if the budget is on the table and needs to be spent or it wont be there next year; then go balls deep with with nanotube handguards and stock pads made from superelastic aerogel .
>>
>>65559238
I mean, you are the one spouting false bullshit. A 77gr bullet coming out of a 10.3" barrel is not terminally effective out to 300 meters. Staying ignorant may not be a good choice, but it's your choice, so we'll respect it.

I mentioned the tumbling; I referred to it as yawning, but it's the same thing. Once more nice reading skills (not). Furthermore, it tumbles much better out of a longer barrel where it's travelling faster.
>On top of that 77gr was literally designed as a long range bullet lmao
Yes, you retard. A lot of people use that ammo with 18-24" SPRs, where it is travelling much faster.

I dump the entire slop design to begin with and issue proper battle rifles sending 300 winmag which is superior at all ranges you will be engaging an enemy.

Ear pro is standardized in the U.S. Army and integrated into comms. That isn’t true for any country we will realistically be going to war with. Stick the barrel through the door and squeeze off a magazine on full auto and you’ve just subjected Achmed to an improvised 30 banger and he’s easy pickings. The increased penetration allows you to punch through any wall he’s hiding behind. The brain melting concussions this thing would put out would also improve direct CQB engagement. Their first shot might be accurate in a quick draw competition. Nothing else will be.

Guy you responded to here. If 5.56 can't effectively yaw, tumble, or fragment, then it's not doing its job properly and there isn't a single 5.56 load that can do that at 300 yards when fired out of a 10.3" barrel (why'd you switch to yards, I had mentioned meters). That is not me talking smack about the 77gr round, those are great. That is me acknowledging the limitations of a 10.3" barrel.

>>65560658
>I need you to catch up to a dozen years ago

Hahahaha, out of a 10.3" barrel it doesn't, you moron. Go ahead and shoot a boar or gel block at 300 yards away with your round of choice; show us the yawing and tumbling. Don't cheat the test; use a proper 10.3" rifle. The US military already concluded that they need a 14.5" barrel to do it at 275m, but you can go ahead and prove them wrong by doing it at 300m with a 10.3".

you're just ignorant. i get 2650 fps at the muzzle with 55gr vmax out of my 10.3. 55gr vmax has a minimum expansion/fragmentation threshold of 1600fps. out of my 10.3, that threshold isnt passed until ~350 meters.

yes, it will have issues with barrier penetration, but thats irrelevant to the terminal effect on a fleshy medium at that range.

Anon, the minimum threshold gives you a small chance of it happening; the standard threshold (2,700 fps for a 55gr, 2,500 fps for a 62gr, 2,100 for a 77gr) guarantees yaw, tumble, and/or fragmentation. BTW, the standard threshold is 88 yards for a 55gr out of a 10.3" barrel; don't rely too much on the minimum threshold.

it was initially but after it worn out the guns too fast they reduced it and now it's completely identical to the base M855 in velocity and pressure. it's got the same BC too, so you don't need to change sights on the guns/scopes either.

>guarantees yaw, tumble
velocity doesn't guarantee yawing or tumbling in the meaningful depth of penetration, it's inherently an unreliable mechanism unless you use special bullet design to facilitate it.
>>
>>65561561
>unless you use special bullet design to facilitate it.
Which is exactly what 5.56 is, a special bullet designed to yaw and tumble (unlike crap like 7.62x39mm which doesn't do so); it still needs velocity to do so reliably, as even the other two guys arguing with me have already conceded.

velocity is irrelevant to bullet stability in tissue. velocity exclusively impacts fragmentation if and only if the bullet yaws
> as even the other two guys arguing with me have already conceded.
weird way to avoid actually arguing by claiming victory while behaving like a child.
>>
>>65561818
>what's so special about it
>point me to the specific design to facilitate it.
1. Its low mass and HIGH velocity makes it much more likely to destabilize under a sudden increase in drag (hitting flesh).
2. Its center of mass is in the rear, being a pitzer bullet helps it yaw a bit but the low mass and high velocity is more important as we can see 5.56 and 5.45 yawing way more than 7.62 for example.
>velocity is irrelevant to bullet stability in tissue. velocity exclusively impacts fragmentation
Absolutely incorrect and every single ballistics professional in the industry disagrees with you.
>if and only if the bullet yaws
Ah, you tried to sneak in a fact to try and hide the falsehood earlier in the sentence. Yes, the bullet needs to yaw to reliably fragment, but you will not get reliable yawing and tumbling out of 5.56 without enough velocity.
>weird way to avoid actually arguing by claiming victory
Did your retarded ass just butt in without even knowing what we were talking about? I was discussing with them whether a 10.3" barrel is enough to get reliable yawing, tumbling, and fragmentation at 300m. They claim yes, and I claim no. I'm not claiming victory over them by talking to you; I am pointing out how even though they and I stand opposed on that topic, the three of us (not you, the other two guys and I) agreed on the importance of velocity, you absolute dumbass. I'm still waiting on the other guy to show me his 62-68gr or 77gr ammo tumbling at 300m with specifically a 10.3" barrel, I'm actually open to being proved wrong by him if he has proof, but he keeps trying to move the goalpost down to 250 yards now that he can't seem to quantify his earlier 300-meter claim.

They did. All the guys running a 10.3" in the GWOT are now returning to 14.5" with the URG-I. Go 3" shorter, turning your 10.3" AR-15 into a 7" AR-15 and now your AR-15 has the same power as a P90 (5.7 gun with a 10.3" barrel)
