6.5 creed. Ballistics are so simple that it takes the guesswork out of PoA and PoI thus resulting in more consistent shot placement. The ballistics are such that with just half-decent shot placement you'll get an ethical kill.

People advocate for bigger cartridges because they compensate for poor shot placement.

For most people? 30-30 in a lever gun or 7.62x39 if you want a semi-auto. For people in places where shots will reach out beyond 200 yards? Step it up to something like .308/30-06/6.5mememoor. The reality is the vast majority of people in the US live and hunt east of the Mississippi so 30-30 or 7.62x39 are more than accurate enough and they carry enough projectile weight to knock down just about anything commonly hunted in North America. Lever guns for the old farts or traditionalists, AK(or a x39 AR if you're a weirdo...) for the more modern memelords.

This.

I’ve been hunting for 25 years and .308 hits so much harder than 6.5. To be fair, deer get totally clobbered by even .243. But i’ve had more DRT results from .308 on deer than anything else. I’m talking a high shoulder shot that passes clean through but when cleaning the deer, the chest cavity is borscht soup wirh small chunks of heart, lung, and liver.

There are literally hundreds of different cartridges that are good deer cartridges. Which deer cartridges have the history and vibe of deer hunting is a valid metric. Which cartridge is perfectly optimized for the specific shooting conditions you personally hunt is going to differ from person to person even within the same square mile. But, which cartridges are generally great across a wide variety of conditions plus which ones have that history and vibe leaves us with the following:

- .270 Win for the Great Plains and Mountain West

- .30-30 Win for the forested eastern US and the Great Lakes Region.

- .257 Roberts for the open farmland areas of New England and East of the Ohio River.

- .303 British for Canada

- 6.5x55 Swede for Norway (Norwegians shoot EVERYTHING with 6.5 Swede).

Honorable mentions:
.243 Win, .30-06, .308 Win, 7mm-08, .44 Mag, .280 Rem, .25-06, .30-40 Krag, .35 Rem

If we look at sheer number of deer taking by each cartridge, .270 Winchester has probably taken more mule deer than any other cartridge and .30-30 Win has probably taken more whitetail deer than any other cartridge.

My heart belongs to .280 Ackley Improved even though .280 REM had .270 Winchester consign it to the bowels of history and the only advantage of .280AI over 7mm mag is magazine capacity (you can fit 280 AI in the same spaces as .30-06, so on a normal long action bolt gun you’re giving up 100FPS on 7mm Mag to load 5 instead of 3). It’s not classic or maybe even optimal (plenty of arguments it’s too much cartridge for some environments), but it brings so much capability to the 06 bolt face that I can’t help but love it.

My ideal 4 rifle gunsafe is a 6mm ARC semiautomatic, a .280 AI controlled feed bolt gun, a .45-70 lever action, and a 9.3x74r double.

It's a family of cartridges specifically designed for handloaders; you're not locking yourself out of anything, as you can fire the original cartridge the AI is replacing on the AI gun (shoot the .243 Winchester out of the .243 AI chamber, and now you've fireformed a case for .243 AI, or shooting a .280 Remington out of a .280 AI chamber to fireform the case for .280 AI). The .280 AI is the most famous because its the only one that now has factory ammunition for it.

For everyday carry? Shadow 2 Carry easily. 15 rounds in the standard mag with the original base plate is great, small overall, and the slide already comes optics ready with cowitness height if using the EPS Carry or similar optics that direct fit to the slide. Less expensive than the 92LTT I have and the trigger is *almost* as good out the box as the LTT. My 92LTT Centurion has the NP3 coated parts which gives everything a slick feel to it. No hangups anywhere or grittiness at all in the trigger pull. Definitely added to the lead time, and the RDO cut already has a lengthy lead time.

You can’t really compare military fmj vs modern expanding hunting ammo. I’d rather be hit by 150gr fmj 308 than 140ish Vmax 6.5.

Expanding 165gr+ 308 ammo is absolutely brutally lethal inside a quarter mile. I’d be fine taking mine for grizzly and buffalo

Deer hunting arguments on the internet almost always start because of the differences between deer that people are talking about.
When you get people saying they take deer with .223 you inevitably get someone freaking out that its basically animal cruelty, but the important difference is the shooter was talking about taking the smaller deer like the southern white tails we have her in Texas, versus something nearly twice or three times larger like a Mule Deer.
Anyway, for me it would still be .308. It just werks.

To an extent. You still have a maximum pressure. You can use slower burning powders with heavier bullets if you have lots of barrel length to play with without having to think about compressed loads, this is one of those "extreme" cases I mentioned. >>
>>65564592
Me too.
>>65564637
Mine was also DRT at 370 yards. Shot a mountain goat a couple weeks ago at 200 yards, same thing. Bullet>cartridge, the wounds produced by a .264 ELD X are wayyy bigger than I was getting using hot 168gr TTSX out of my .30-06. My sample size with the 6.5 is still small but I had some long runs with a bigger gun using harder bullets.
>>
>>65564730
I'm absolutely obsessed with hunting, but I accept that only a small part of the drive is for food. I eat everything that I kill and don't kill what I won't eat (for the most part) but if all I cared about was meat, I would just zero in on easy doe or any-buck areas and shoot the first legal animals I saw until I had my limits. I could do this with any old shitrod rifle. It would probably take me 2-3 days. Instead I spend all season looking for trophy animals in circumstances I find exciting.

>>65565797
I have a .30-06, and no .308, and all I shoot is handloads but these days I wish I'd just gone for the .308. A potential 150-200fps more isn't worth the inefficiencies, and when you're reloading for precision you sure appreciate more modern case design. It's fun to play with heavier bullets but few people actually hunt with them.

Never going to sell the gun as I kilt me a lot of animals with it and it's a superb rifle overall (CRF Winchester 70). Just wish I wasn't burning that extra 10 grains of powder for next to nothing. The difference in precision between virgin and fire formed brass is also more pronounced than I find with my 6.5CM, which is annoying (caveat, I need a somewhat larger sample size than I have now, but the trend is there). I basically have a throwaway firing on modern brass.
>>
Lots of hunters over on rokslide seem to really like .223 77gr TMK.

Never tried it myself but it’s been used to great effect on deer, elk, black bear, etc
>>
>>65566297
I mean, I do. I have no desire to buy meat. It's just that hunting is also my hobby and passion.

Anyway there's no argument here, except that hunting as we know and love it is more cultural than anything else. Depending on your level of opportunity, if all you want is meat you would be better off making money with the time you spend going after deer, and you'll quickly arrive at the same conclusion unless you actively enjoy the process.
>>
>>65566318
Love those threads, love watching the seethe. I'm not going after anything with my .223 any time soon but magnumfags, copperfags etc absolutely blown the fuck out. The bullet matters more than the caliber and fragmentation is good.

>>

>>65566318
I’ve killed a bunch of deer with 60 grain Barnes TSX bullets, but using an AR pistol was cope to let me get rifleish performance in a “shotgun or pistol only” zone. This year I’m able to use a rifle because the DNR repealed that restriction and I’m not in one of the counties that banned rifle hunting altogether to try and do an end run around the DNR rule change, so this year I’m using a Swede Mauser.
>>
>>65566382
A well constructed 5.56 bullet will penetrate several feet into flesh. The dangers of smaller, lighter bullets are excess deflection if you hit bone (which can turn a kill shot into a painful injury) and a smaller permanent wound channel, which means you have less forgiveness on your shot placement and slower death when shooting in a place where the principle fatal injury is done to blood vessels. Plenty of chugs kill elk and moose with 55 grain FMJ.
>>
>>65566413
Mmhmm I’ve also seen plenty of chuds dump 6-7 shots of .243 into a moose before it dropped. I’m sure you can probably get three or four into an elk easily but that’s not really the standard we’re looking to uphold here now is it?

Incredible penetration, narrow wounds. I used to shoot 168gr Barnes TTSX out of my '06, I no longer see the point in using a bullet that will give me 3 feet of penetration on an animal that's 16" across at the shoulders. Had some long runs on deer and deer sized game. A 165gr Speer Hot-Cor will still exit on broadside shots and does way more internal damage at literally 1/4 the cost.

Burning 20-30% more powder and generating 20-30% more recoil for a 5-7% increase in velocity. That velocity gain doesn't result in any significant improvement in hit probability or lethality. I used to care less when powder was cheaper and I shot fewer rounds practicing.

A 180 grain bonded soft point. Doesn't really matter what's pushing it.

Honorable mention, the 6.5 is like a 750cc motorcycle, it's just the perfect size for human men.

Sorry you can't get down with Real Fucking NATO, you'd be a lot cooler if you did.

They don't sell venison at my local grocery stores. And for me it's by far the cheapest way to get local, sustainable, grass-fed, free range, ethically raised meat.

22lr to the head

The distances matter a lot more than the relative size of the animals, they get taller, they get more muscle at the shoulder, but the vitals themselves aren't that deep (rib to rib) even on a cranker muley

>What is the greatest deer caliber in your opinion?
>22LR.
Has easily taken more deer at night than many other calibers have during the day.

Do people still poach nowadays? Game wardens are so hungry for collars that they'll try and arrest innocent people, so I figured it was because there aren't enough legitimate criminals for them to catch.

Oh yeah. Post up at a good vantage point in the Ozarks after midnight and you can watch the headlights slow rolling and sweeping the fields.

Anons. I have a decision to make. .375 H&H or .416 Rigby? I want to over penetrate at every angle.

>>65567053
.416 right now and then get the .375 later

Where I live we have tiny Sitka Black Tail deer. The body is the size of a large dog with little stick legs. I use a 30.06 with 180 grain noslers because Brown Bears, Moose, Wolves try to kill you and I want something that kills them back.

>Why should I bear any hatred for someone that is oblivious weaker than myself? All I feel is pity.

Picrel is 3500 fps 124 gr hollow point screamer handloads. The fireball and concussion from the bare muzzle is more severe than any muzzle brake on a 308 or 300 win mag

is .35 whelen overkill for east coast deer? I want to build the ultimate fudd gun that can kill anything on the continent, but realistically it's not going to shoot anything but whitetail and pigs.
