Ukraine will be getting 24 A-29Ns via Embraer to help in counter drone activities

>In September 2026, Infodefensa reported that Ukraine was in neogitations to buy 24 A-29N (NATO standard) aircrafts via Embraer OGMA in Portugal. These aircraft will perform drone defense missions.[171]

Air Tractor on suicide watch

Sexy plane, Saar
>>
So are they just going to do fly bys with ARs on the drones in these or do they have some kind of airburst munitions in cannons they can whip out? The point of these planes initially was to just shoot at people who can't afford MANPADs or GPMGs.

My guess is that they'll be used for ISR and counter drone shit, the A29N does have more advanced stuff like NATO Data Link

Doesn't seem like a bad APKWS slinger. An LCA would do it better but naturally at a greater cost and likewise a real fighter vs an LCA.

Only internal guns on the tucano are .50s.
The cannon is podded.

Neat. I was very recently wondering why they hadn't done this.

APKWS, different counter-drone systems like webm related, etc.
Cannons are generally too dangerous, very easy to get hit by shit from the explosion and go down.

They've wanted Super Tacos since 2019 but Brazil being a bricks slowed it down
>In August 2019, a Ukrainian military delegation visited Embraer's military division in São Paulo and flew the Super Tucano.[168] In October 2019, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a meeting with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, said that his country would buy the Super Tucano.[169] In December 2022, the Brazilian media reported a Ukrainian interest in the Super Tucano, to equip its air force for the Russo-Ukrainian War; however, the sale was blocked by the Bolsonaro administration.[170] A diplomatic effort by the United States to persuade the president-elect of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to unblock the deal, has been reported.[170]

>>65576308
YES!!! Finally after all these years Ukrainian Super Tucano's will be a reality
>>65576323
Brazil has been pushing hard on the idea that the Super Tucano was an excellent anti-drone platform for the past year or two. So getting the plane into Ukrainian hands with easy PR wins for how impressive these things perform will also allow future sales to Embraer. Plus the fact that any future sales will also include tech transfers as well will also boost both Ukraine and Brazil in their own unique ways too

It would be a very solid anti-drone platform, even against jet drones, but I have an extremely hard time believing Brazil is going to sell Ukraine anything.

It's being done by Embraer in Portugal, so I guess they found some loophole.

I will never not be furious we went with some gay fucking cropduster over these beauties
>>
>>65581064
Worst part about it is that AFSOC wanted the A-29 but Jim Jordan stonewalled their acquisition in favor of the AT-6. SOCOM spited him by not choosing either and going with the cropduster that they are no longer buying. Every fiscal year there are less cropdusters on order.

Tucanos are overrated expensive pieces of shit.

If super tucanos were so good, china would have made a copy a long time ago. But they didn't even bother to copy it.

Lula also blocked the sale of multiple weapons to Ukraine the following year (including 300 guarani). Brazil simply isn't interested in taking part in the war, even if it would benefit its military industry.

I assume probably to shoot down those Geran-5 drones.
The old way of doing it with a guy in the back of a WW2 biplane doesn't work anymore because they're a little too fast to catch with those.
Tucano is comfortably within the top speed range of the Geran-5, and is cheap as shit to fly, so that's why I assume that'll be it's role.
>>
>>
>>65576308
Good shit, I have loved this concept since day one and look forward to them seeing combat.
I just hope commanders are smart enough to keep them behind the front.

>>65576323
They are for low threat environments like shooting at drones above Ukie controlled territory. They shouldn't be bombing Russian trenches.
>>
>>65582954
The US is constantly invading thirdies so it makes sense for them to have a low cost thiidie killer.
China isn't and their primary concern is war with the US so they don't have a use for them.

Not every nation has the same requirements.

Yeah probably. I've just seen people act like it has hispanos in the wings because it's listed as having a 20mm cannon and they didn't read further.

Though I wonder what the optimal gun is for this kind of work, with the balance of magazine depth vs performance
>>
>>65576308
can these actually chase down the new jet powered drone though?
>>
>>65585555
If the Geran-5 is being sent at a target very close to the frontline then likely no as it will be flying at max speed. If it is being sent after far away targets then its speed should be lower for better fuel economy. The Toucano should be able to chace down the slow ones.

Nah, Annushka has outlived all attempts to replace it so far.

Age old story of the MIC designing a modern replacement for cheap and reliable old hardware - they succeed beyond the wildest expectations, except the resulting craft is neither cheap nor reliable.

So I'm a bit ignorant to the engineering involved in all of this but why is it using an engine that was first designed in the 50s? When I look up the specs of the plane on wikipedia its rather comparable to something built in WW2 (speed, takeoff weight, altitude, range, etc,) In the world of automobiles the difference between a car made today and a car made in 60+ years ago is immense. Even a crappy budget car can outperform most stuff from that era. So other than modern electronics, what makes this plane so unique?
>>
>>65585555
it cruises at 280 knots and has a max of 320 knots, yeah

>muh ufo disclosures

>>
>>65586057
>what makes this plane so unique?
>Aerodynamics
>Fuel efficiency
>Modern chemistry and metallurgical resistances to heat in the engine
>a shape that can fly and still have armor protecting the pilots and critical areas of the aircraft
>>
>>65576308
Ukraine is going to fly the Brazilian equivalent of the Warthog in a war that has anti-air saturation on both sides? This is gonna go SO well.
>>
>>65586107
elaborate and cite your sources
>>
>>65586116
A P-51s fuel burn rate was 60 to 75 gallons per hour
An A-29s is 30 to 35

https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2007/august/01/north-american-aviation-p-51d-mustang

https://aerocorner.com/aircraft/embraer-super-tucano/
>>
>>65586130
So why are they still using an engine first designed in 1958? Surely modern stuff is even better than that
>>
>>65586112
They're OBVIOUSLY not going to bring it anywhere near zigger airspace.
>>
>>65586112
They do weird stuff, they often do retarded stuff. But it's probably going to be a drone hunter and it will probably excell in that role.
>>
>>65586184
NTA, the engine may have just been available. Sure, you could get a more powerful engine but you likely won't need it when the purpose of the A-29 is to look for illegal flights and fight insurgents, not to duel armed aircraft or do SEAD.
>>
>>65577375
This aircraft really does seem well suited to lawnmower removal. I’m seeing claims from around 1k to $1,500 per hour of flight time. That’s dirt cheap for an interceptor.
>>
>>65586057
Government regulations
Its extremely expensive to get a "flight certificate"
So no one but airlines even try to break the monopolies.
>>
>>65585551
>Though I wonder what the optimal gun is for this kind of work, with the balance of magazine depth vs performance
.50s with proximity fuses set during firing by laser rangefinder.
