Instead of replacing the krag Jorgensen with the M1903 Springfield, why didn't the Military just give the krag a mauser action, give it three locking lugs, remove the side door, chamber it in 30-06, and add stripper clip loading?
>>65586569There was already a Krag variant prototype with two symmetrical lugs. I think the capsule magazine being a more complicated design was part of the decision. Real shame, though, as it would at least allow snipers to reload with clips while still having a centered scope, so there's that potential advantage.
