If 38 Special is good enough to kill John Lennon, why isn't it good enough to be your EDC caliber?
>>
>>65587847
John Lennon lives!
>>
>>65587847
People are now fatter than John Lennon was at his death.
>>
British "man" comes to USA, immediately INTS. many such cases. Sad!
>>
That's truly retarded logic. That said I personally think .38 is fine. Just don't use that kind of logic
>>
>>65587847
>If 38 Special is good enough to kill John Lennon, why isn't it good enough to be your EDC caliber?
It's a fine EDC caliber but you could also have a pocket pistol with almost twice as many rounds in it.
If someone isn't neutralized after pumping 6 rounds of .38 special into them, not much else is going to help though.
>>
>>65587847
I'd be pretty happy with a 6 shot .38 with a 2.5" barrel on it, not my dream carry gun, but it'd do quite fine. Unfortunately I'm in a very gay euro country, so no carry for me.

>>65587992
Fat isn't that meaningful for hindering penetration AFAIK, but also we have better .38 Special ammunition now than we did back then.

>>65587847
Because John Lennon was an emaciated docile dope head who had absolutely no muscle mass from years of a vegan diet and copious amounts of drugs. Pretty sure he would have died to a solid punch. I don't trust a .38 special to take down a raging 200 pound ex con ooga booga charging at me full chimp out. That's like saying "My grand dad killed an armadillo with a .17 hmr back in the 80s. Why don't you use it for wild boar defense?" You can go become a loot drop for the nearest nigger if you'd like, but I'll stay behind the comfort of my .357 magnum, thanks.

>>
>>65587847
the truth about pistol caliber is it doesn't make a huge difference. A hole is a hole is a hole. Immediate incapacitation has way more to do with shot placement. A pistol is not a rifle.
You have to step the velocity and mass way up above what anyone will ever want a pistol to be before it makes a significant difference.
>>

>>
>>65590086
Even by muzzle velocity the 9mm stomps all over .38. Across the board 9mm will fire the same bullets faster. It does this without even +P loadings.
My current 9mm load is 158 grain revolver bullets at 1,050 fps. Something that .38 +P has trouble doing.
>>
>>65587847

First off who is gun sam? Secondly, I took issue with anon's method of showing proof, not took issue with the reality that .38 is technically outmatched. Because by his logic (PSI chamber pressure), you would come to the conclusion that 5.56 is almost as powerful as .30-06, which is absolutely absurd
>>
>>65590086

What's true? That a bunch of retard killers were taken by a popular book? Sure, but schizos and idiots are great at interpreting all sorts of deranged nonsense from art and entertainment, that's what makes them schizos and idiots.

Sane and non-retarded people don't get that effect from Catcher In The Rye because their brains aren't defective (which is why sane people go to read it and are then confused by why there wasn't anything actually sinister, as reputed), so what you're looking at is typical brain defects reading weirdly into a popular book, with the added memetic effect of prior defectives having already done it because it's a popular work.

None of this says anything about the works in question, because these are the same kind of people who for instance reason that they are going to be reincarnated as a ghost with titties for killing people, or that a blue cartoon dog (or their neighbor's real dog) instructed them to.
Anything else is nothing but the kind of gay larp you typically see in the retarded end of 'True Crime' fandom, where people think it'd be cooler if there was something more at play than arbitrary and insipid noise from demented minds.

tl;dr you're gay and stupid, yet not just gay and stupid, but dare I say very cringe

No, not really. 38 special defensive loads are all still trash, either failing to expand and still only barely hitting adequate penetration, or expanding and definitely not hitting required penetration, or in most cases, failing to expand and failing to hit penetration.
Also lenon had massively lost weight, he was like 110lbs at time of his death, and he was ambushed and shot 4 times point blank. A .22 would've probably resulted in the same outcome.
>>
>>65587847

1. Buffalo bore 180gr bullets are getting 1300-1400fps from a 3", that 168gr load you referenced is getting g 1100fps from a 3". Not even close to 357 mag ballistics.
Not only that, just spouting weights and velocities means nothing, all that matters is terminal performance, and that BB 38 load performs like dogshit, out if a 2" barrel it is expanding some, but it's only hitting like 12-13" of penetration, which fine is technically thr "minimum" standard set by FBI pencil pushers, whereas the FBI ballisticians heavily suggest in all their ballistic reports on the subject that 16"-18" or so should be the bare minimum penetration in gel, with no real maximum standard as penetration is king.
>>
>>65590305
More case capacity can produce more force at lower pressures, that is true, but:
The case capcity of 38spl is 75% more than 9mm
The case capacity of 45 auto is 444% more than 25 auto.

Salinger wasn't just intelligence, but he specifically dealt with debriefing/interrogating Nazis after the war. He doesn't have a literary career before or after Catcher in the Rye, which is very odd.

However, Uncle Paul ran a bunch of .38s through his patented meat target. The FTX performed 100% as intended. I'm inclined to trust the meat target more than the gel.

There's plenty of 38 special 148 grain wadcutter ballistics gel data out there. It very consistently penetrates 12-18".
That is THE snubbie defense load, with the caveat being I wouldn't actually purchase the wadcutters that are advertised for defense and are loaded a bit hot, as those will probably actually overpenetrate. Target loads are best. They'll meet the FBI penetration standard.
The real best, if you can find them, are the copper-plated 148 grain wadcutters. Those will penetrate similarly through bare gel/light clothing but will have vastly superior penetration through heavy clothing/car windows.
>>
>>65592922
There are two 38 LCR models. One with a removable front sight and one with a fixed front sight. The fixed front sight one was going for $400-500 new.
Sucks because I considered the LCR the best concealed carry revolver on the market. It's smol as shit, light as shit, proven reliable and made by a proven company with proven customer service. Only an idiot would buy a new competing Airweight right now with S&W's current revolver QC issues, and Taurus, LOL.

Also, the LCR has possibly the finest, smoothest double action only trigger on the market, and was part of the Hard R line, which is awesome.

You know it's funny you should mention that. The highest number of attackers incapacitated during a self defense scenario was actually 4 and they were indeed all niggers. The victim used a .38 snub nose to defend himself.

It is, but John Lennon isn't why it's good enough. Bernhard Goetz is.

.38 Special was designed specifically to put down raging, drugged-up attackers in the aftermath of the Philippine War.
At the start of the war, the US standard service revolver was chambered in .38 Long Colt. .38 LC was anemic and failed to incapacitate Moros before they'd sliced up our boys with machetes. The .38 LCs were pulled and mothballed .45 LC SAAs were dug out from storage to be re-issued. At this point and after the war, the US Army conducted trials for a new service weapon with the caveat that it needed to be chambered in .45 LC or something the same as it. The 1911 was adopted at the end of this trial.
However, at the same time as this trial, the Army reached out to Smith and Wesson and asked them to make .38 Long Colt not suck a bag of dicks. The result of Smith and Wesson's improvements was .38 Special, new and specially designed to put down niggers just as well as .45 ACP. It served this role as America's standard police cartridge into the 70s; the better half of a century.
This isn't to knock your choice of round, .357 was also used to great effect by American police concurrently and after .38 Special. This is just a matter of perspective. As many have posted, the Goetz case proves that the minimum needed for self defense is 5 rounds of .38 Special. As long as your carry gun meets or exceeds this baseline (there's leeway I'd say, like 6 rounds of .32 are probably about equal to 5 rounds of .38 here), you should carry what you want to. If your chosen gun and cartridge is comfy to shoot and makes you feel cool and secure while holding it, you're in the clear. Reloads are statistically not necessary, but if they put you at ease you should carry some.

With a .357 snub, what do you think is more important for the first five rounds, .357 power or more accurate follow up shots with .38?

.38 in the wheel and .357 in speed strips perhaps?
>>
>>65588213
Fwiw I did put down a neighbor's hog with a .357 jhp.
>>
>>65600803
I carry 38s because the follow ups are far more reasonable. The LCR is pretty light and 357 out of it is an absolute monster blast
>>
>>65600814
38+p is really all you should go up to. 357 mag is just too slow to follow up with in a snub.
>>
>>65600822
I don't have any and probably won't bother desu, I cycle through carry funz based on my mood and I'm doing a semiauto most of the time anyways, the 38 is good nuff for me
>>
>>65600803
Honestly if you're carrying the .357 but want to use both, I'd probably go with .357 in the gun with a backup .38 speed strip or speed loader (with an LCR you can just barely fit the bullet heads into the lips of the chambers so that you can release them). Reason being that the .357s, being longer, are better off in your gun, while the .38s will take up less space in your pocket.
I personally just use .38 wadcutters myself though, heard it's an old police trick. Supposedly they tumble and/or deform in flesh and are fairly accurate at the distances you'd be using a snubby at. Makes the speed loaders take up that much less space aside. A similar police trick is to wrap a rubber band or two around the midsection of your grip, that way you can tuck it into your waistband without a holster. The friction from the rubber bands keeps it from slipping down. I haven't needed to do that though, the .38 LCR is light enough that it hasn't shifted much when tucked into the waistband, and I tend to pocket carry it when my clothing permits it anyway.

>while the .38s will take up less space in your pocket
That difference is so small that it's unlikely to matter for very many people, the case on .38 Special is 29.3mm long, the case on .357 Magnum is 33mm long, so it's longer, sure, but in a pocket where a strip of .357 cartridges would be too long to comfortably fit, would .38s really fit very freely and easily? They're only slightly shorter and otherwise all the same dimensions.

It's not like with .22 Long Rifle and .22 Short, where it's a lot shorter and you can actually fit shitloads more cartridges in a tube magazine, in a rifle tube you'd get the same capacity with both .38 and .357
Just as a point of illustration.
>>
Well, I guess with actual wadcutter rounds of .38, that'd be a lot shorter than any regular .357, but how many people actually choose to carry wadcutters in this day and age?

>he doesn't have hard cast keith-style SWCs at +P in his daily snubby
not EVER gonna make it
>>
>>65602603
If you use wadcutters, the difference is that much more apparent as far as the length goes, though it is admittedly still slight. Might make more a difference for speed loaders rather than strips. It's just the way I'd do it if I was carrying 5 or 6 of each, I personally only carry .38, not even +P even though my gun is rated for them.
Might also be better for dealing with the recoil difference. .38s out of a .357 are gonna have much less recoil. Better to be accustomed to the increased recoil of the .357, then on the reload with .38s you might be that much more accurate with lessened recoil. I can't say I'd carry two different cartridges like that for self-defense, but if I was, I'd rather get the .357s out first, then experience the lesser recoil of .38, rather than be accustomed to the .38s first and then be taken a little aback by the higher recoil of the .357s.
I'd say the main utility of a .357 revolver being able to utilize both rounds is more economy or recoil aid rather than using both at once being a great idea. Can use .38 if there's no .357 in stock, for example. If you want a compromise between the lower recoil of a .38 and the power of a .357, you could try using .38 +Ps. It's entirely worth noting that reloads in self-defense shootings don't really happen, most are over within 1-3 shots. Not saying not to carry a reload, I carry two speed loaders myself, but that's entirely for my own peace of mind and the autistic idea that I might have another self-defense situation a while after the first one by some freak chance.
>>65602609
I do actually, I noted why in the post above. Might just be old cop fuddlore, but I figure it can't hurt (me, anyway) either way.
>>
>>65602627

What?
>>
>>65602609
>but how many people actually choose to carry wadcutters in this day and age?
They have niche use for older wheelguns that can't use +P or older cartridges that don't have enough oomph in general to get expansion on a hollowpoint.
>>
>>65602609
I do. They are objectively the best snubbie round.
>>
>>65602818
+P is snappy as FUCK out of a snubbie and thus NOT fun to train with.
I haven't seen a single .38 Special hollowpoint round that reliably expands and reliably penetrates 12-18 inches out of a snubbie according to all the test data out there.
148 grain target load wadcutters are still snappy out of a snubbie (everything is), but tolerable. 100 rounds aren't gonna make your hands sore. So, they're much less likely to discourage training, which is important. Plus, also, obviously, the reduced recoil means increased accuracy on follow-up shots.
They reliably penetrate 12-18 inches out of a snubbie and expansion is a non-issue. The copper plated ones will penetrate 11 inches after going through a windshield.
Wadcutters bestcutters.
>>
>>65603298
They're really not.
>>
>>65603543

Support your choice with objective data.

>buy 357 S&W for hunting sidearm
>primarily shoot 357 to get used to the recoil
>run some 38 special for a range day
>less felt recoil than the 9mm i edc
i'd consider running 38 special as an edc, it's certainly fun to shoot, but 9mm just checks more boxes for me
>>
>>65599722
numbers on paper, 9mm generally out-performs 38sp and has more consistent penetration on FBI ballistic gel tests. when you start shooting 38sp out of a metal frame 357, you get the benefit of less felt-recoil over the 9mm, but you still retain all the cons of running a revolver vs a double-stack 9mm. that being said, 38sp is still a lot of fun to shoot, it's going to be fine in most of the scenarios you'd need it
>>
>>65603585
The first claim was "they're the best", so that's the one that should be supported with data. The only advantage of wadcutters is that they have mild recoil for extremely feminine hands.

Semi-wadcutters loaded hot. Better penetration.

>>65603756
He's not me, but I do agree that you should actually try to back why you think wadcutters are the best.
They're low recoil, and they can work alright, but how harsh is a +P JHP or SWC really to shoot, and how would they have worse terminal ballistics?
>>
>>65603901
>Semi-wadcutters loaded hot. Better penetration.
This will overpenetrate.
Non-hot-loaded SWCs overpenetrate in >>65592246
Your answer is objectively incorrect.
148 grain target load wadcutters penetrate adequately. 12-18 inches consistently, as proven by many, many tests. "Better penetration" is not needed.

Won't reliably expand out of a snubbie.

>This will overpenetrate.
Will SWCs in 9mm and .45 also do this? Are you really sure about that? How about SWCHPs?
>>
>>65604095
Do people even carry 9mm or .45 snub nose revolvers? I bet like five people bought the 9mm LCR.
Anyways, this is a 38 Special thread, anon.
>How about SWCHPs?

Well, now that he's dead, I don't have to worry about him as a threat anymore.
>>
>>65604101
>Do people even carry 9mm or .45 snub nose revolvers?
Wasn't really my question, I mean regardless of gun.

>Won't expand reliably out of a snubbie.
But will they still overpenetrate? Will they penetrate more or less than WCs and SWCs?
>>
>>65604146
Lucky Gunner tested three different SWCHP rounds out of a 38 Special snubbie. None reliably expanded. One had a round overpenetrate by 3.7 inches and one had a round overpenetrate by 9.7 inches.
One actually penetrated reliably between 12 and 18 inches, but actually 1.5 inches less, on average, than the wadcutters. So, given that's a round that penetrates less while having significantly more recoil, that's not something I would use, ESPECIALLY when compared to a copper-plated wadcutter which would have vastly superior penetration through heavy winter clothing or a windshield.
