Thoughts on Ukraine's new body armor?

that guy from /gq/ is going to be creaming himself

We've seen it before.
>>

>>65594552
but to give an actual opinion, I think it's neat. the modularity looks like it's probably less comfortable than an integrated vest, but it also means you're not stuck with an IOTV. the skirt seems fine, I don't know about the forearm armor though. I'd want to hear the reasoning behind that rather than shoulder armor.
>>
>>65594569
I'm assuming that if one arm gets hit in the shoulder and your other forearm is fucked you have no chance of putting on a TQ, whereas if one shoulder is hit your other shoulder is more likely fine?
>>
>>65594569
>>65594579
Possibly idiotic thought. Could it be the coverage it provides when holding and shooting a rifle/human instinct to throw up your arms I front of your face when something happens suddenly like a drone hitting nearby? Maybe they noticed just a weirdly high amount of casualties where there was blast or fragmentation injuries to the forearms?
>>
>>65594544
The dick flap is useless since it covers only your large intestines. Gonads completely exposed.
>>
>>65594619
I think Ukraine would know a little better than you on what works
>>
>>65594544
would be gigakino if the skirt made a comeback
>>
>>65594622
His dick is still uncovered.

>>65594619
Look again, dolt.
>>
>>65594627
He's wearing a full coverage soft armor fauld and tasset.
>>
>>65594614
I'd say that you're probably right anon. I'd imagine the instinct to throw up your arms when a drone is beelining for you is probably extremely high and difficult to not do. So why not just throw in soft armor for your forearms into your kit in order to help alleviate a huge number of injuries from shrapnel?
>>65594622
what is this? A picture for ants!?
>>
>>65594569
>>65594579
>>65594614
>>65594645
I've always thought that except for air burst shrapnel soft shoulder armor is pretty useless in combat, since it isn't doing much if anything to stop a rifle round and its only other benefit is stopping ground burst from a very specific angle.

Looks okay, but I cant see it being comfortable when a belt and pouches inevitably get plastered to it. The kilt should really just had molle on it. and been treated as an oversized conventional frag belt.
>>
>>65594544
>forearm protection
>no deltoid protection
Seems a bit bass ackwards. The axillary and brachial arteries seem more important as well as providing extra side protection ot the upper thorax.
>>
>>65594756
Not so much from a drone strike. Shrapnel is presumably going to be coming at you from fairly close, so a steep angle.
>>
>>65594544
>Body armor in drones age
Why bother?? No armor is best armor.
Camouflage and agility are more important. Especially for a country with a very limited resource that is fighting far more superrior and better armed enemy.

what a waste
i'd rather have shoulder protection to protect my precious blood that lie by my armpits
>>
>>65594653
This dynamically though! It has more use when you're prone or only exposing the top portion of your body like in a turret or shooting over cover.

At this point just recreate medieval plate armor with whatever materials are used today for bullet protection.

Why no throat protector?
>>
>>65595138
Correct. The shoulder also contains vascular and nervous structures that are much harder to treat than upper/lower arm injuries of a similar sort. Plus shrapnel can enter the chest cavity via the shoulder.
>>
Why a plate carrier when it's all about FPV drone fragmentation, vehicle based assault teams and trench warfare?
GWOT plate carriers worked because SOFs needed to move fast and far in the middle of nowhere.

The only reason I can come up is they want to reduce injuries leading to loss of hand function from severed nerves and tendons, to have fewer crippled vets.

>>
>>65594614
All the times people threw grenades at me I seemed to end up with it either in my face and head or lower legs. Its pretty much a pot-luck as sooner or later everyone gets a bit of high speed hot metal from grenades. They do a lot of trench raiding though which is both grenade happy with all the shit parts of door kicking in an urban warfare environment with abandoned villages. So if some mad orc is doing his best to whack you with something in CQC, your defensive fend with forearms is something to keep in mind as well
>>
>>65595208
Gorget? Pretty sure he is wearing one, it just doesn't go very high.

no shit, there are always going to be compromises due to cost and weight. the kind of dumb retard shit where people go

because reasons. you want people to walk around in giant suits? actually, don't answer that.

Actual reason is that if you're aiming your gun, your forearms are blocking your torso and plates, so it makes sense to have some flavor of protection there even if it's just frag and pistol.

I've often wondered if anyone has done a study to see how often the left shoulder,/arm are hit in close combat compared to the right one. You would think the leading side would get hit more often, maybe even enough to justify Tau style armor that favors one side. You are using your lead hand to reload so you could offset the weight with an ammo pouch on the other side.

>>

Weight offset mean shit when one is on an extremity and the other your torso. Plus as soon as you empty thay pouch any semblance of balance is gone. Not saying it doesn't have any merit, just that that argument is invalid.

Maybe we'll get a soft armor buff coat in the next 5 years.
>>
>>65596645
Maybe not ammo but your canteen/med kit then.

Logically any weight imbalance that occurs during combat due to shedding offset weight would be inconsequential due to the short time frame of most combats, you probably wouldn't notice. Besides, soldiers have been dealing with imbalanced loads ever since they started carrying swords and pistols, hence old pistol belts having a shoulder strap. Half the guys out there already have a imbalanced load anyway, everyone wants to clip their stock to their right shoulder harness these days.

>>65596645
>>65596700
>>65596526
A helmet with a face plate on one side would make sense since it could be balanced and would provide meaningful protection while not interfering with your cheek weld.
>>
>>65594544
I came here ready to shitpost but I actually think it looks really slick. My uneducated guess is that they left the upper arms uncovered to make getting a TQ on tight easier if the sleeves and skirt are meant to offer some shrapnel resistance from muh drooones. Not gonna do much good against a direct hit but I highly doubt those are anywhere near as common as the number of guys getting incapacitated or bleeding out from near hits.
>>
>>65596725
>shrapnel resistance from muh drooones. Not gonna do much good against a direct hit but I highly doubt those are anywhere near as common as the number of guys getting incapacitated or bleeding out from near hits.

More thoughts into asymmetric body armor: Most drones miss, they often get shot down by the person they are targeting. These guys tend to get wounded anyway since they often set it off or force it to land short, they just didn't get directly hit. I would be willing to bet a significant sum of money that those wounds are disproportionately on the left side of their body.
>>
>>65596526
Can't speak to anything that happens IRL but I've noticed while playing bannerlord that my character takes arrows to the fist/forearm with surprising regularity during skirmishes, in spite of the fact that should be a really small target compared to the rest of their body
>>
>>65596808
It just seems like something that merits serious investigation; if you are going to get hit by something you are firing at then the majority of hits should be on the leading side of your body.
>>
>>65594544
>>65594707

Fascinating. They are armoring extremities, lower body, and the trauma plate is tweaked for coverage. None on the neck though. I bet the boots are armored. The lower body though that is where its at - disproportionate death from dick shots changed best practice enough to put troops in skirts lol
>>
>>65597925
To be fair, none of this is surprising new info.
We've known fo decades which parts of teh human body you have to armor, whihc parts you can leave unarmored to remain mobile and hopefully avoid being hit

It's just that in earlier conflicts the amount of precision-dropped shrapnel was way, WAY lower, so the equation has changed towards trhe end that you WIL get hit, and it is better to not have your balls blown off/a bleeding wound in your leg because medevac can take days.

It's probably not for mines, it will be for FPV frag. The dick is covered from angles above 180.

Seems backwards.

Understandable based on drones everywhere.
>>
>>65596808
This happens in fps games with hitboxes of body parts that cover others, in a game I played the hand hitbox of one character used to cover their face and they were almost impossible to headshot because of it so the devs shrank their hand
>>
>>65596526
It's vidya though I play a lot of Gmod with a regional armor mod (Jmod for the curious) and the left shoulder/forearm bits get hit about twice as much as the right one. Granted it's mostly in firefights where I'm facing an enemy instead of frag coming from wherever so I guess the only real real life takeaway is that it could be good in breaching. Picrel.
