Are there mortars designed solely for that purpose?
There are 4 types of blast injuries. What you're asking about are Primary blast injuries. Copied and pasted from Statpearls:Primary Blast InjuryPrimary blast injury is caused by the blast wave moving through the body. Since only high-order explosives create a blast wave, primary blast injuries are unique to high-order explosions. The blast wave causes more extensive damage to air-filled organs. The resulting barotrauma can affect the lungs, auditory organs, the eye, brain, and gastrointestinal tract.Blast earTympanic membrane rupture and middle ear damageBlast lungInjury to the lung parenchymaCan have delayed symptom presentationBlast brainInjury to the brain parenchyma, even without direct injury to the headBlast eyeRupture of the globe of the eyeBlast bellyInjury causing abdominal hemorrhage and perforation (immediate and delayed), as well as injury to solid organs and testicular rupturePrimary blast injuries can be subtle and have a delayed presentation. Blast lung should be considered in any victim who has dyspnea, cough, hemoptysis, and/or chest pain. The respiratory system can sustain significant injury from a blast wave. If the pressure exceeds 40 psi, the victim could sustain a pulmonary contusion, pneumothorax, air embolism, interstitial parenchyma damage, and/or subcutaneous emphysema.Pulmonary contusion is the most common respiratory injury and can present up to 48 hours after injury. Lung overstretch can also activate the vagus nerve, leading to apnea and/or bradycardia. Blast ear should be considered in any victim who has decreased hearing or hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, and/or bleeding from the ear. If there is bleeding from the ear, consider that the blast was intense enough to cause injury to the lungs and hollow organs. In instances when the ear is over-pressurized (greater than 5 psi), the bony ossicles of the ear can be dislocated, fractured, and /or permanently destroyed.[8](1/2)
>>65599248Blast belly should be considered in any victim presenting with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, vomiting blood, rectal pain, testicular pain, unexplained hypovolemia, abdominal distention, and/or rigidity. The colon is the most common area of hemorrhage and perforation. As with blast lung, intestinal perforation may occur acutely or present with a delayed onset of up to 48 hours. Solid internal abdominal organs can also be contused or lacerated; however, solid organ damage occurs much less than does hollow organ damage.Blast brain should be considered in any victim presenting with headache, fatigue, confusion, poor concentration, amnesia, decreased level of consciousness, depression, anxiety, and/or insomnia. Blast eye should be considered in victims with eye pain, swelling, contusion or ecchymosis around the orbit, bleeding from the eye, decreased vision, and/or blindness.[9] The blast wave may also damage the heart. Victims can have chest pain, tachycardia, decreased pulse pressure, cardiac dysrhythmias, and/or hypotension as a result of heart involvement. In victims with multiple presenting injuries or in incidents with multiple casualties, injuries could be easy to miss. Victims of primary blast injuries may not initially show any obvious signs of injury.>And to answer your question about mortar rounds: to an extent, HE rounds cause maximal primary blast injury, but the amount of HE material needed to cause these (lethally) in a wide radius is prohibitive compared to the material needed to cause secondary blast injuries (shrapnel) across a similar radius. Hence, antipersonnel rounds are usually focused on that.

>>65599248>>65599254Wouldn't getting behind something sturdy reduce the pressure from the blast?
>>65598990is that a female??would
>>65598990The most common cause of death is the overpressure rupturing the blood vessels in your lungs so you drown in blood.
>Screenshot of a video because OP is probably a phonetard>ARE THERE MORTARS DESIGNED TO MAKE A BIG EXPLOSION?Every few weeks I come to /k/ and then I remember why I stop coming to /k/.
The issue is that the lethal range of the blast overlaps with the lethal range of the shrapnel.Weapons with poor fragmentation effects—such as dynamite guns and the Japanese Type 98 mortar—were not highly regarded, despite the large amount of explosive charge they delivered. Fuel-air explosives have also never seen widespread use.
>>65599545The primary roll of pure HE these days is delayed fuses to get inside structures.
>>65598990O really wish you fucktards would post some fucking context with that random shit

>>65599468In WW2 in bunkers people had to bent down (like in a plane when they crash (land)), this compresses the lung and mad surviving a close by bomb explosion a bit more likely.. we got told there were some guys that wanted to appear brave and did now cower and after the air raid still sat upright but were dead, just like the guy in the pic… lung ruptured and there was that.
>>65599468Yeah, provided the solid is sturdy enough and has a good composition for pressure deflection. Everything getting hit by a pressure wave is basically exposed to an extremely high pressure impulse of excited air particles. Bodies are harmed when this gigantic wall of extremely high pressure impacts your fragile tissue that would really not rather be exposed to ΔPs of that level. Because your lungs are full of air, even if you're not in the immediate blast zone, the pressure differential will rip the shit out of your alveoli, sometimes it can even cause emboli that kill you a week later.
>>65599482Not really, mortars rely on fragmentation, there's not enough of HE filler to kill you with overpressure further away than you get shredded apart by bits of the casing.
>>65599468Correct. Iirc it's called a blast wave shadow, pretty much any substantial cover will create a "shaded" area behind it where overpressure is lower than in the open. It's important to keep in mind that this is an area of relatively lower pressure as opposed to a safe place to be though. Better than nothing I guess.
>>65600641I was talking about the wounding mechanism of fragless weapons like thermobarics.I don't know of a motor shell that isn't designed to produce frag.
