I just built myself up a new G26X. It's become my favorite new carry piece and I want ammo to go with it. I already cast my own subsonic loads for suppressed use. I use Lee's 147gr FP bullet, hardcast into water, and powder coat it to prevent lead fouling. Great load that's preformed great in all my guns, including my G26. However, a hardcast bullet at 800fps (out of my 10.5" AR9, which would be even lower out of my baby glock) isn't great for self defense. I wondered if I softcast them if that would make for a better self defense round that should mushroom in any would be ne'er-do-well. I like shooting at least 50 rounds out of my carry gun a week, and defensive ammo is still too expensive for that kind of practice. Just want to know if this idea is bunk before I test it. Anyone who tries to cast safely knows it takes some setup and time and I just don't want to waste too much time if my instincts are way off. >Note:My G26X has no official glock parts, including a non-polygonal rifled barrel. So, it does work well with cast bullets.
You could try, but you really don't want TOO soft lead, you'd get too much expansion and it'd rob you of way too much penetration to be worth it.This is why S&W discontinued those older Nyclad hollowpoint rounds (pic related), they were using a softly alloyed lead intended to lower the expansion threshold from short barrels, and it did that, even created really good expansion, but it had a disastrous effect on penetration, made wounds very shallow. There's certain old boomers on some forums who think they were outlawed or politically pressured out of the market, and that they were secretly super bullets, but no, they were simply just a bad product which sucked.
>>65600230Why softcast when you can swaaaaage
>>65600353Envious of that Colt Detective. I deeply wish for 2 of them with antler grips, Same as Sammy Davis Jr. In Robbo and the 7 Hoods.
>>65600230It's definitely a thing. I wouldn't go so far as to call it soft cast but adjusting your BH to tailor expansion with cast projectiles is a fairly common thing among the cast bullet crowd. If you look around some forums there's a good bit of info out there on it. Casting your FP so soft it expands well and doesn't over penetrate would be an interesting experiment but you'd probably be better off getting a HP mold and casting them only a bit softer so that you don't have to worry about excessive leading.
