>I've shot about 1000 deer over the years and only started using copper rounds 2 or 3 years ago. >While they get the job done on a 300lb animal at 300 meters, lead bullets (muh toxic) were definitely hit better and killed quicker. >I've been shooting .270 120 grain sako, and .270 129 grain barnes and 25-06 sako (various). Has anybody else had a similar experience? Whats the best copper bullet for the job? 6.5CM? 6.5 or 7 PRC?
Are you limited by law? Whats stopping you from just using lead nose?
>>65600990Game dealer will only accept non-toxic (copper). you cant sell the venison if you shoot with lead. Its top down unfortunately, the supermarkets seem to have imposed this despite nobody ever getting ill from lead rifle bullet shot game. perhaps some lead shot in shotgun shells getting ingested might have a minor effect but I don't believe it.
>>65601004Good!Glad to know your jew grift of raping the deer population for shekels has problems for you. Take fat boomers on guided hunts and ahoot the deer for them. >pic rel
>>65601215>raping the deer populationNo such thing possible, urbanite retard
>>65601243skill issue
>>65600984Yea that's a pretty common experience. Your typical copper monolithic projectiles are designed for high weight retention and deeper penetration. If you're looking for a wider wound cavity then you'll want to look at the copper pre fragmented designs. A good example of that would be the "controlled chaos" line from lehigh. Unsure if they're made in your particular caliber but somebody out there probably makes something similar. There are several smaller copper projectile manufacturers if you look into it that do oddball calibers or designs.
>>65600984Move up to a 9mm rifle caliber like .35 Whelen or one of the Euro 9.3s. The bullets for bigger, slower, calibers are designed to be more forgiving about opening velocities. I like the 180 grain presegmented 180 grain .358 Barnes TTSX for applications above 2000 fps at the target, and good options exist at .366 as well.
>>65601215are you retarded? we have massive over population
>>65601319interesting ill have a look>>65601259the website is cooked but ill have a look. ill just muddle on for the meantime
>>65600984>Calibrelol europoor
>>65601215you are actually retarded.
>>65601215You do realize they're practically an infestation in a lot of places don't you?
>>65600984>Whats the best copper bullet for the job? 6.5CM? 6.5 or 7 PRC?6.5 is fine for lead ammo, 7mm is peak for lead ammo, but consider .308 (7.62) if you're poor, and consider .338 (8.6), .358 (9.1), .366 (9.3), and/or .375 (9.5) cartridges if you're loaded (or a handloader). Copper unfortunately doesn't expand like lead.>>65601319I scrolled down to see that you've beat me to the good advice.
>>65600984Aim for the head or neck so that the caliber or whether or not it is leaded will not matter that much.I hope to headshot a deer with my Zastava M48.
>>65601915Yeah, lots of people go with a flatter shooting cartridge to try and extend their effective range, but the small bore copper stuff is pretty velocity sensitive, so unless you’re overdriving the piss out of them (60 grain TTSX .22/250, for instance), you’re actually losing effective range despite superior external ballistics. I was very pleased with how the 60 grain TTSX worked in a 20 inch .223 rifle, under 120 yards, but wasn’t spectacular past 150. So it was great for deer hunting at my parents farm, but less great for the more open territory I hunt now. Switching to .35 Whelen cut 50 yards off of my Point Blank Zero, necessitating the use of a rangefinder and elevation dope, but it still opens great at 300 yards.
>>65600984Whatever the best bullet you used was, get the same LENGTH of bullet in copper. Disregard the weights of the bullet...monos need to be pushed fucking fast to open up. I use a 20" tikka t3x ctr pushing 168 tsx's at 2700fps and I dont shoot animals at ranges where the bullets go under 2200fps because they just dont open up. Ill be switching to 130gr tsx's eventually.
>>65602281crazy rifle choice, and neck shots are for cowboys at over 200 meters. (0.5 moa accuracy is 1 inch at 200, so even the smallest human error on top and you've made a big mess).>>65603443Red deer will need a little moor oomph>>65605029interesting, i might have a go at this. the down range energy should be higher than with lead though no? better BC and all that? If I were to go by length that means going from 120/129 gr to 100, which seems way too low but ill investigate.>>65601915I think others have said that .308 is not as different in copper as faster lower grain loads.do you think the new 6.5 peak+ will make a big difference? just the extra energy at hunting distances will be substantial. europoor so itll be years before we get them.
>>65606454>I think others have said that .308 is not as different in copper as faster lower grain loads.Oh, I wasn't thinking of expansion at all because copper in general just expands less reliably than lead. I was simply recommending the largest diameter bullet you could find, a big hole, like the good old-fashioned days of hunting; think of yourself like those hunters from the 1890s.>do you think the new 6.5 peak+ will make a big difference? It will most likely make a positive difference; I just don't know if that difference will be significant enough to be meaningful. That's something that someone with more time than me would have to test.
