Honestly, some of the anons have made some pretty compelling points in favor of “hazing.” I think the best argument for them has been that it enforces a clear hierarchy with boundaries and expectations for both boots and the higher ranks. You simply cannot expect fresh 18-19-year-old high school graduates to give a fuck about rank structure, hierarchy, or to understand why they should follow the orders of some Cpl just because he’s been in two years longer than him, or some fresh lieutenant simply because he got a degree in underwater basket weaving.
