Okay we are not getting giant mechaBut what about exoskeletons like the Scopedog, Avatar, Titantfall?
Too easy to kill
>>65603989dont the scopedogs have eggshell armor?
>>65603985Find a power source better than diesel and you'll have it
>>65603985Just go make a thread on /m/ faggot
>>65603996Their problem is that they're the Me 163 of mecha. The army literally deploys them as IEDs in that one movie.
>>65604002>>65602951
>>65603985those ARE mechs not exoskeletons, idiot.
>>65604061you sit in the torso not wear it
>>65603985The exoskeletons that make sense are the weight-bearing exoskeletons rather than those which are basically legally distinct mechs.
>>65603985All three of those things a literally mechs, not exoskeletons. Your question is so FUBAR that I doubt you even want to discuss the topic. However, I’ll try my best to answer in good faith.Mechs are unrealistic regardless of size. Even “small” ones like titans and the ones from Avatar have all the same vulnerabilities as a gundam or eva sans weight and size. They offer very little advantages over an IFV or any other armor with many more disadvantages. This is a topic done to death on this board so I’ll assume you already know all the pros and cons. As for exoskeletons, as in “a mechanical or robotic suit worn to augment human strength, endurance, or mobility”, the argument is different. Militaries all over the world have put research into the topic and have expressed interest in the technology but, similarly to mechs, the means of powering such devices are too primitive to be viable. While there may be a use case for support units (guys working in depots and warehouses) with our current technology, there would have to be some great leap forwards in terms of battery life or power generation in order for exoskeletons to become practical on the battlefield. But if such a technology became widely available it would surely be adopted. Now, soldiers wouldn’t all become Titan pilots that can run on walls or run fifty miles per hour or become walking gunships like in Edge of Tomorrow. Instead they would probably use the extra strength to carry heavier loads; extra ammo, heavier body armor, more manpads, ect. But again, none of that is possible until a revolution in power supply happens.>tl;drNo, we’re not getting exoskeletons in any serious manner, especially on the battlefield.
>>65603985Gotta go even smaller. Hardsuits are the future.
>>65604109isn't that just battle armor?
>>65603985We should focus on muscle suits.
>>65604096>a revolution in power supply happensThe goalposts for this get moved every time they're achieved. It happened 2-3 times between the 2000s and 2010s.
>>65604249qrd?
>>65604264An example that is easier to understand and visualize. While I'm all for exo-skeletons ultimately it makes sense to make something that can continue to be used with current equipment. Ideally, it should be wearable under uniform and offer such things as climate control, some measure of powered assistance and protection. You can wear typical gear on top of it but it would be better if it was modular and allowed for attachments on the suit itself which should also be usable on it's own or act as a base system for other pieces of equipment.>TL:DRTake the suits the space marines and Sparts wear under their armor and make the option of putting shit on it while also being able to wear it normally.
>>65604264DARPA tried some 'soft' exosuit designs in the early 2010s based on compressed air support, and edgy nerds being contrarian against the 'hard suit' scifi memes of the time trumpeted them as based. The soft suits didn't actually work out. You get better results from a thigh brace. The tl;dr of exoskeletons is yes they're possible, no battery/fuel life is no longer an issue (it gets delivered alongside standard ammo shipments), yes they need powered legs, yes they have passive leg/back/neck support, no they don't have powered arms, yes they boost armor coverage massively, no they don't boost it enough to live your space marine larp fantasies - you get suppressed like every other grunt.Ultimately they're neat, there's a real advantage, but the edge is tiny and the backhaul large compared to any other practical infantry-level tech boost. Caseless ammo would be a better upgrade than exoskeletons. And in turn, FPVs are a better upgrade than caseless/poly ammo.
>>65604255Because those revolutions aren't enough.Moving from arsenic bronze to tin bronze was a big fucking deal. It still didn't allow the mass proliferation of arms that iron did.
>>65604109no fucking way someone else remembers Blacklight Retribution
>>65604313Wut? It's an obscure game from a long time ago but it was great for its day.
>>65603998
>>65604370
>>65604370What form is that hydrogen stored in, and does the comparison include the difference in size and mass of the containment vessel, or the energy required to release the hydrogen if stored in a stabilized solid form?
>>65604412>What form is that hydrogen stored in, and does the comparison include the difference in size and mass of the containment vessel, or the energy required to release the hydrogen if stored in a stabilized solid formNo, but the current peak we can achieve per kg is that. There are some cheats around that like burning the byproducting of the reaction, weird tripropelant combinations, and some esoteric chemistry around the state of hydrogen.
>>65604075Do you sit in a cockpit or are your limbs inside the limbs of the mech/armor?Because a mech is a vehicle with legs, and power armor/exoskeleton is still human armor with, as you might guess, powered assistance. And this is probably the only practical mech size you're gonna see, anything bigger and you're better off with wheels or tracks any smaller and it's probably gonna be power armor instead of a piloted mech. And even then this is basically a bipedal forklift with a hardpoint for a vehicle scale gun, if not for anime bullshit vidya logic meaning it can jump 20 ft in the air and land without harming the operator or itself it probably would just be worse than a forklift with some makeshift armor and a gun taped to it.
>>65604412Don't forget Hydrogen having a nasty habit of fucking any pressurized tank it's in up thanks to those pesky laws of physics.
>>65603985Drone food.
Imagine dropping three of these out of a cargo plane attached to a company of Rangers deep in the enemy backline causing havoc to supply lines and comm stations. Variants could include .50 cal machine gunner or 20mm "rifleman"
>>65603985In about 350 years
>>65604527Me likey
>>65604527why does the M14 have a curved magazine?
>>65604527>Variants could include .50 cal machine gunner or 20mm "rifleman"so its an armored recon car like what europe uses, but with 1 crew instead of 3 and on legs
>>65604527forget the 20mm give it a 30mm armor piercing incendiary "battle rifle" and a backup 7.62mm MG that the pilot can use, You esnt this thing causing major damage to shit. Strategically it would be used to pull enemy armor and AT weapons away from the frontlines to soften defense.>>65605221Now you can give the armored recon cars mortars or more advanced Electronic warfare devices while the suits act as closer fire support able to bound with infantry
>>65605235>Now you can give the armored recon cars mortarswhy not a mortar backpack
>>65605240Maybe for big army but in spec ops the suit is better used as an assault element
>>65604527>Shield on the wrong arm, can't protect anything if the pilot actually tries to aim with that gun he's holding instead of posing like the image>Pilot is doing the splits, I hope he does flexibility exercises because otherwise he's just amputated his legs>Pilot unprotected except for a groin flap and gorget>Said armor also prevents the pilot from shouldring the rifle, has to awkwardly rely purely on the mech's extended left arm to absorb recoilWow, what an incredibly shit design for a mech, for artist should be ashamed to draw such a terrible design.
>>65603985you should know by now that even that is too cool to ever happen irldo you really think they'll let individual men have even this much power?when are you gonna accept the fact that real life is lame and gay?
>>65604401>Boron has 4.3 times the energy density per liter of gasoline>Uranium being oxydized releases some 100MJ/L also>Aluminium does 80MJ
>>65604109>>65604313I miss it
what would be the best wheel size for powered skate?
>>65603985>spend as much as a tank (at least)>to make a single bulletproof soldier>with far less mobility than infanty>and far greater logistical problems>that still justifies the use of an ATGM to one-shot it (and that can't carry the weight of armour or APS needed to give it a hope in hell of surviving an ATGM)Still a retarded idea OP.
>>65604370Hydrogen will never ever work. Give up
hey chuds you can buy this now. Don't let your dreams be dream
>>65610124woah nice
>>65604527 is 20-23mm even adequate against modern IFVs? it feels like they keep getting upgunned and uparmored
>>65603985>mechano>AI heavy-infantry dronesyes
>>65613976 man whatever that thing looks big enough to have a cockpit i'll just imagine that it's 4 meters tall
>>65613976This basically. The issue is that all these technologies can be better applied than a mech/exosuit. Why heavily armor a guy when ideally he isn't even there. Why increase strength to carry more gun when you could make gun carry itself. Unmanned systems are more likely than super soldier. Humans are just very expensive and squishy.
>>65603985Nah, the best you can get is FPV drones with longer range dan more payload. Take it or leave it.
>>65604370>>65604401Energy efficiency and higher energy potential per gram of material is all nice and definitely impressive on a chart but the reason why we still use inefficient fossil fuels is that they work by the simplest chemical transformation mechanism possible which is combustion, and can be safely refined and extracted at massive scales.
>>65614833Because the drones still need to be controlled from somewhere and that somewhere will be a priority target for enemy forces. By putting all of his equipment into a suit of powered armor, the drone operator has a much better chance of surviving and relocating if and when his drone bunker is located.
I feel like they'd work best as a small, mobile platform for heavy weapons. Something akin to the Wiesel tank.
>>65603985The maximum size at which a mech is still practical is 6’8”. Any taller than that and you’re better off with infantry.
>>65615102The bigger problem is that the reason to make something mech-shaped is so that it can do human things, and human-things make the most sense to do for a mech that is human-sized, so any mech that can fit through a standard 6’8” door is massively less useful immediately
>>65615120>that can fit*can’t fit
>>65615120A mech can still be practical as a vehicle with legs. You're forgetting about horses, which are basically biological mechs. For a long time, horses were a force multiplier for soldiers.
>>65615137We already have those though. They’re called horses.
>>65605220Mini 14
>>65615534Not if they, or their riders, are killed by simply one bullet shot.
>>65615036I call dibs on being in front!
>>65615581If you want something to not die to bullets we already have those too.
>>65615102>H, Li, F tripropelantDangerously based.
>>65604455No need for it to be manned for non special roles. This fact alone would make the mech More bettere'r
>>65615137We can make them better through genetics augmentation and prosthetics.
