This was by no means unique to the M14 though since Chu wood stocks on Chinese SKS rifles would also rot away leading the development of a fiberglass stock for it as well. AK furniture rotted, warped and cracked as well.
The real reason why the M14 sucked is because it doesn't have a magazine well. Other rifles made during the same time as it had magazine wells. A rifle without a magazine well is like telling a man to load the rifle and the magazine only falls out after doing so because you didn't do the multi step magic trick of inserting the magazine. That was also why I decided against an AK.
