Do you personally like the AR or AK better?
Me personally, I have a 20” AR. Not really a big fan honestly. Bought an AK parts kit a while back, and can’t decide if I should go through with building it or not. The kit isn’t perfect. It was a first build of someone else. The idea of having a rifle to toss around and not really care about is fun, but idk if I should go through with it like I said. What do you think anons?
I do have a press (just need a jack). I’d also need something to crush rivets. I’m not sure about everything else id need aside from a few parts like the barrel, and receiver.
If it’s not worth it, or you can talk me out of it, I may just stock up on 5.56; then potentially buy a shorter upper in the future. Idk

I appreciate them both. Tbh I prefer retro style ARs and fully modernized AKs, generally people like them the other way.

While I love my AK, I prefer my AR. The manual of arms is better imo, not to mention modularity, parts availability, and ammo being cheaper/more available. If at all possible, see if you can find an AK to try out and go from there, but an AR just makes more sense as a primary rifle if you're in the western hemisphere.

That does make a lot of sense. Idk if it’s just me though, but when I hold my AR, I just don’t really feel anything. Maybe I’m autistic, but I it just feels kinda bland I guess. It’s a basic A4 clamshell, so maybe that’s why.
I really do like the look of the MK18 Mod 0’s though.

I understand and kind of agree. I definitely get a different feeling whenever I'm handling one of my milsurp guns. I think it's just them being older and having more "soul". I don't know about you, but I'm a believer in items putting out energies you can pick up on, like items have a little bit of a spirit. I'm especially convinced of this when it comes to my firearms and vehicles. I know its kinds woowoo, but I guess everyone gets a pass on having one or two weird beliefs.

That's some thirdie ass Russian thinking right there
>>
Ive had to carry an AK and I dont want to anymore. Against popular beliefs theyre not immune to careless owners or damage from "tossing around" or snow or dirt.

AR all the way, although only because it's the platform I'm most familiar with. My first centerfire rifle was an SKS (remember when those were $180 or cheaper?) and the logical next step would've been for me to get an AK to go with my all Tula and Silver Bear 7.62×39 ammo (remember those too...), but I decided to do an AR build when my older brother kindly got me an Anderson Lower (why do the things I love die?) on sale for $30 as a present.

That was unconsciously the better choice, little did we all know. However, even if dirt cheap steel case was still a thing (and not like that wouldn't also mean that steel 22e wasn't the same cheap price), I'm happy I dove head first into the platform with LRBHO, easier accessory mounting and options, a better (to me) magazine release, and the flatter shooting cartridge. Shot a lot of friend's AKs, even ones with modern furniture that address some of the issues I have with it, and even some in 223, but they've just never spoke to me the same way. Although, again, I chock that up mainly to familiarity.

I agree to an extent. I know what you’re saying. I’m a Christian. The Bible says we are made in God’s image. The way I think is like if God created the universe and everything we know right, and we’re created in His image; then naturally we have an ability to create as well. I mean obviously I’m not saying we’re God, or we can create a universe. But we have the ability to create art, music, cars, things. Kinda like how you’re not you’re parents, but you are kinda like your parents in ways, and you inherit certain attributes.

Proverbs 18:21 NIV
21 The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.
——-
Our words have power. If we speak negative things over ourselves, or about others, it has more of an impact than we think. I think in that same way, what we create can be affected in the attitude we have when we are creating said things. Idk I think in a similar way to you I guess. Kinda like how when you see AI slop, you can just tell, you know? It’s just “ehh..”. It’s Souless.
Maybe AR’s were just created not out of passion but to just be efficient. Then the AK was just made for the love of the game.
>>
>>65613006
>Then the AK was just made for the love of the game.
It was made by drunken atheist commie Russians who barely knew how to slap a gun together
>>
>>65612909
Honestly not too warm to either but if you twist my arm I'd say AR. I've owned both and currently have neither (unless you count an AR9 as an AR which I personally don't)
>>
>>65613079
>unless you count an AR9 as an AR which I personally don't
Why don't you? I have 2, 16" and 7.5", and I literally got them to train with the platform well shooting cheaper ammo, and if it's blowback, with the same recoil impulse. Depending on the mags, the function is the exact same and it operates on. Hell you could even be using a bogstandard AR lower if using an adapter mag.
>>
Anon just build the kit out already. You’ve made some variation of this post so many times. Arms of America has the parts you need. You don’t lose your AR by having an AK and you end up with more guns at the end of the day. Break the decision paralysis and just do it.

Guess because it's not gas operated. I mean is a 22lr STG-44 an STG? No, right? Same mentality

That’s just simply not true. To make a gun, especially something iconic as the AK does require a certain level of knowledge, skill, and thought put into it.
Secondly Mikhail Kalashnikov was actually Orthodox Christian. Also, as far as I know AK’s are the only rifles to be blessed by a priest. Even if he was atheist all his life, it’s kind of funny how you say that. Do you expect me to recoil in my seat and think differently about a pile of metal and wood that God still created just because an atheist put it together? Haha

>>
>>65612997
Friend, I really appreciate your input and explaining all bases (modern AK’s, and even chambered in 223). It kinda makes me wonder if maybe I just would enjoy it better if I swapped the upper on mine or something. Aesthetically speaking, I like my 20”, but maybe if it were a little more maneuverable, and lighter I’d find it more fun.
Like I said, I do think the MK18 Mod 0 looks pretty sick.
>>
>>65612909
I like my AR, and I like my AKs.

Objectively speaking, my AR is a superior rifle. More accurate, easier to modify with accessories, and easier to repair if something breaks.

However, there's just something satisfying about using an AK. I'm also a fan of 7.62x39, which was the first semi-automatic rifle cartridge I cut my teeth on. I even have my AR chambered in it.
>>
>>65613543
ARfags say shit like this and expect us normal humans to parse out what's so wrong. Is it because his lower has the wrong marking? Is it because he's using the wrong suppressor? What makes it the worst configuration?
>>
>>65613651
That’s what I’m saying. Is it because I have a 20” clamshell upper? Is it the 20”, or is it the clamshell? Maybe I actually like carry handles.

>>65613712
NTA but the average ARfag genuinely can't handle a 20in AR (despite pencil barrel A1 clones being ridiculously light). it's 10-11.5 HBAR only for them now, anything longer is bad for muh CQB and having good ballistics with cheap 55gr is a bad thing for some reason
>>
>>65613726
>good ballistics with cheap 55gr is a bad thing for some reason
Yeah, see that was my line of thinking. I’m all for cheap ammo, plus to me, the 20” AR’s just look cool. I suppose nobody but myself can really tell me what I would like at the end of the day. It’s just as I said earlier, I’ve never really been crazy about my AR. Idk what would make me actually enjoy shooting it more. That’s why I wanted to try an AK.
As for all the attachments and aftermarket stuff, someday I would like to get nods, plus I’m a big fan of ear pro. That being said, I’d like to add an IR laser, plus a suppressor. Other than that, I’m not big on optics or anything else really (aside from like my hunting rifle).
>>
>>65613556
I went from a 20 inch AR to a 14 1/2 inch AR to an 8 inch ak chasing a lightweight hiking/camping gun. Wound up with a mini 14. Still own and enjoy all of them though.
>>
>>65612909
I don't own an AR tbdesu. I have an AK and an AUG because I'm a gay hipster. I've shot ARs and they're quite nice but I'm an extremely irrational person so I never got one.

I guess I'm coming more from a "man this thing has been around for awhile. If this could talk, I'm sure it could share some wild stories" angle.

For instance, I bought a Lee Enfield from RTI when they got a bunch from Ethiopia, and it has been heavily used. The barrel bands were kept on eith some old bailing wire, the buttplate looks like someone used it to drive tent stakes, and there is absolutely no finish left on any metal part.

Or, my Springfield Trapdoor rifle that has been passed down through my family ever since my Great Great uncle bought it from the military when he was discharged.

Or, the 20 year old pickup truck I spent 2 months driving around the US in when I was 19 years old. It was 5 different colors because I wrecked it in high-school and rebuilt it with junk yard parts. It had morale patches glued to the headliner, some because I thought they were cool, and others were reflective of where I traveled in it. Hell, I even bolted a NATO style jerry can to the back of it to carry extra fuel (not because I needed it, but because I thought it was cool).

These things become a reflection of the people who owned and cared for them, and you can somehow sense that when something is well used. It becomes an extension of self, and when you come into possession of an object like that, it's almost as if your turning to a blank page and leaving your mark in the history book of that item.

Maybe I'm just getting sentimental in my half drunken state, but I've always felt this strange sense of mystery and wonder when i come into contact with old or clearly used items, especially machines.
>>
>>65614137
And after all those, what conclusions did you come to?
>>65614234
>I guess I'm coming more from a "man this thing has been around for awhile. If this could talk, I'm sure it could share some wild stories" angle.
Oh yeah, I gotcha. Yeah, I agree. I like having something nice, but at the same time, I do enjoy stuff that’s got wear and history behind it. I feel that way about my m1916 Spanish Mauser. You kinda wonder like how you said about the stories it could tell like “Man I wonder what this thing’s seen.” Haha
And kinda in that same vein, I do like stuff that’s isn’t perfect, because I tend to just be like “ok, I don’t have to really worry about keeping this thing all nice” (I still do tend to take care of stuff, but that’s how I picture it in my head.). And for that reason, is why I do think it’d be cool to put together the AK. I just don’t wanna buy all the tools though admittedly.
It sounds like you yourself have had a lot of fun memories, anon.

ARs are ok, I have one and an AK. I much prefer my AK but it's just too expensive to shoot now. My friend has an AUG and I kind of hate that gun though
>>
>>65614390
Get a 5.56 AK
>>
>>65614390
I thought 7.62x39 prices were comparable to 5.56 these days? I have ammo stockpiled so I haven't checked ammoseek in a while though.
Also I like all bullpups tbdesu but the AUG looks the coolest imo.
>>65614427
I want to buy a ZPAP M90 some time next year.
>>
>>65612909
>can’t decide if I should go through with building it
So you just blew your money impulsively. Not too bright.
>>
>>65614254
Lol yeah I got a few good stories I could share. Luckily, I'm still pretty young, so hopefully I have plenty of time to make more!

Yeah nice new things are great, and I do have a few newer ARs I try and keep relatively nice. But, at the end of the day, they're tools meant to be used, and they'll get dinged up here and there in the process. It's funny to think, maybe in 50 years, I can hand down one of my ARs to my son or grandson, and he'll look at it with the same reverence and fondness as I look at the single shot .22 my grandpa gave me when I was young.
>>
>>65614390
>I much prefer my AK but it's just too expensive to shoot now.
where are you shopping for ammo, bro? It's at least $15 a box where I shop, which is more expensive than 5.56 but not apocalyptic
