It's getting into brass prep season now, so how was everyone's year?New Matches?Higher Scores?New Builds?New Shooters?Get cozy and lets see those builds, groups, reloading benches, anything precision.Lets hear how you improved this year and what you want to try next year, too.
>>65634429This year was warmup.Found some good loads and stocked up on components.Trading my Vortex out for a Nightforce this month.
>>65634448Hell yeah, it's a rewarding hobby for sure especially when you load your own. What caliber are you shooting and how far out have you taken it?What model NF are you picking up?
>>65634485The benchrest C104. Replacing a 3-9 Crossfire.Rifle is one of the original Rem 5R Milspecs from the custom shop. Definitely deserving of better glass. Only taken it to 300 so far but my range just expanded and now goes a full mile.
>>65634429This year was pretty fun, Although I only have 600m to shoot so spent a lot of time shooting 55gr 223 and 22lr out to distance to practice wind calls.
>>65634497Wow, I think you might notice a slight difference in glass quality with that upgrade. Definitely well deserved on a nice rifle like that. Consider me extremely jealous regarding that range. So far I've maxed out at 875 yards with my 308, but next year there's PRS matches about two hours north of me that go a little past 1000. My 6GT build in the OP was built for that, but it got delayed, so I missed the last match up there this year. A mile would be a dream come true. >>65634517Glad you had a fun year! 600m is plenty fun with a 223. I keep wanting to get into rimfire matches too. There's something just so pleasing about the humble 22LR at distance. I'm digging your rifle setups too, looks like a lot of fun.
Going to the range today...its just a day to shoot off some ammo. Ive been trying to figure out the best way to hold a rifle (collar bone/center of chest, shoulder pocket, or on the actual shoulder. Im finding that im super inconsistent with that. My LR gun (14lb 6.5creedmoor) is dead center on mt when i lay prone. I cant do that with my 8lb 300prc hunting rifle, it hurts way too fucking much. So ive been try the pocket and the actual shoudler to see what works. Oh, and ive totally figured out GRT this last month...so thats a win.
How precise does a rifle have to be to be acceptable to post ITT?
Arken released pic related for lile 500$ and a new scope mount for PRS. Once the mount reaches germany i swap all rings out with mono block. Scope for the Creedmoor came today
>>65635924Its up to you...the ulimited class of rifles literally has rounds going in the same hole, but lightweight magnum rifles are an absolute bitch to get sub-half moa.Its a definition that can drive a guy mad.My personal definition of a precision rifle is 1 inch for all hunting rifles, and sub moa for LR target guns that weight 12lbs+.
>>65634429Any beginner guides/inforgraphics? Maybe a prefered beginner scope/rifle list? I am simply no longer satisfied with shooting 3moa groups with my AR at 100yds. I want to hit things with small rocks very far away.
>>65636785I've shot with a couple guys running Bergara B-14's who have been happy with them. Out of the box, it's a good setup for under $1200. For glass, I wouldn't go any cheaper than something like the Strike Eagle 5-25, but if you can swing it, I'd go for a PST Gen II. When I first started, I had a Tikka T3X CTR in 308 Win that I put in a Bell & Carlson stock and a PST Gen II on top. That's what I shot for several years with and it performed exceptionally well. Depending on your budget, you could jump for a Tikka Ace Target in 6.5 Creed too. I have one in 308 and it's a tac driver. I've shot several bullseye matches where I've placed in the top three with that and it's a completely factory rifle. Decide how much you're willing to spend first, and go from there.
>>65636785>>65636858I realized I keep talking only in Vortex glass. I chose a brand and stuck with it to keep my reticles the same between rifles, but there's lots of other options. I just don't have personal experience with many of them. Everyone has their own preferences, but I would recommend not going super cheap to start with. If you get a decent optic, you'll be able to use it for a long time, and if you decide it's not for you, good glass is generally easy to resell.
Hi friends! Not sure if you guys remember me, I made this thread a while back - >>65457541I ended up getting that Howa 1500 barreled action from Brownells for my first PR build. Here is the build and price breakdown:512.14 - Howa 1500 barreled action in 6.5CM349.21 - MDT Field stock and picatinny rail829.68 - Arken G5 GenII scope 7-35x56 FFP084.81 - 2 magazinesAdded up, total was $1755.84.I took it to the range for the first time today, and tested several different ammo types and grain weights. Results of the range trip to follow.
>>65638374Here are the 5-shot groupings, all taken at 100 yds.Shot Herter's 125 gr first, then the Sig, then the Federal.Gun seems to like the 140 gr, but it also shot pretty well with the Sig if you ignore the fliers. It seems the Herters 125 gr is a no-go for precision, it was cheap as hell too.My take - I liked it! Very easy to shoot, cycled nicely, was quite comfortable, and I think with enough practice I can get sub-moa.Fed some bullets in singly, ran like a champ.Far-cry from my Browning x-bolt in 30-06. That gun is OK, but I could never seem to get 1 MOA groupings out of it. My thanks to the Anon who suggested Arken!
>>65638374I hope you like the Arken 7-35, I still love mine. My Ar15 is without scope because the ring screws broke from a malfunction in the torque screw and the small HMR didnt got its scope because it got delivered at my parents home. I wonder how the new TOR reticle looks and performs. Have alot of fun with your new babe, i hope its a performer :D
I really wish Sako didn't discontinue the S20 in the US I think I would have been a really cool platform to see get popular.
>>65634429Some 10 round groups I shot playing with seating depth at 100 yards. I still have under 100 rounds through this new 6GT, so my ES and SD should continue to get better, but so far I've found a load with 22fps ES and 7fps SD. The 105gr Berger hybrid targets are fantastic, but I love the load development process, so I'll be picking up Berger 109s, Sierra 107s, Hornady 109s, and lapua scenar 105s just to test and play around with.
>>65639910Is the 140gr ELDM a good choice out of a 22" barrel? I think the 147gr might be to heavy. Besides that 139gr Lapua Scenar OTM look good. Berger too expensiv
>>65639998I take it you're shooting a 6.5 Creed?Generally speaking, a heavier bullet is going to be favorable out of a shorter barrel. The burn characteristics are important, and depending on your powder, if you have a very light bullet that accelerates quickly in a very short barrel, you could still be burning powder as it leaves your rifle. Heavier bullets tend to get you a full burn in a shorter distance because of the increased work required. A lot of variables go into choosing the right bullet. I had a 20" barrel on my old Tikka 308, and it really liked heavier bullets. 168 sierra matchkings shot well, I couldn't get the 169's to work for me at all, but the 175's out of that gun grouped incredibly well. (pic is 5 rounds @100)If you're looking to shoot past 500/600 yards, I would recommend going as heavy as your rifle will tolerate. Even if they're moving a little slower, the higher BC will be preferable at distance. Just make sure your rifle has an appropriate twist rate for your selected bullet weight and you should be good to go. Every rifle is different though, so play around, enjoy the range time, and see what groups well for you. As I was saying with the 169 matchkings, by all metrics, they should have been great bullets, but my rifle just didn't like them one bit. Real world data out of your own rifle is going to be your best friend.
Anyone in Canada into the prs competitions, specifically in BC?A friend suggested we join but we dont know if there is a circuit, or a dedicated range to go to, etc. We're in SW BC if that matters.
>>65640123Looks like BCPRL is a thing if you just plug that into your search engine. They've got a contact page, and I'm sure if you reach out, they'd be more than happy to help you figure out how to get started. They have their 2026 schedule up still, but I would assume dates and locations would be similar for next year too. I'm not from Canada, but I wholeheartedly support your endeavor from down here in the States!
