I know its not much, but its what I have: a manatee I saw at the Miami Seaquarium several hundred years ago. Sadly, it is closed now, but they did a lot of rescue work, like the manatees.

They got a bad rap and attacked by local politicians (and competition). It was a wonderful place though. Naturally, the local politicians are now turning the land into fancy condos. Its true they had some management problems for a while but it was all exaggerated. They just wanted the land for the real estate.

I even got to see Lolita the whale and contrary to what Peta people said, she was quite happy. They had a lot of good people working there. It was heartbreaking that the baddies won and shut them down. Still, Florida has a lot of beautiful nature, and I am glad they seem invested in protecting it. But the real estate sharks there never stop.

Well, its an involved story. It started when animal rights people were doing a coast-to-coast assault on whale exhibits, and Lolita's was too small, but by then there was nothing they could really do; they couldn't release her, she was too domesticated. Competition drained revenue, and there was nowhere to expand, and moving them to Sea World wouldn't appease the animal rights people. Sea World even offered to build a veritable whale utopia that would've cost a billion, but the animal rights people weren't having it.

Later, Seaquarium got sold and resold several times, and had the usual care violations. Nothing atypical, and they did legitimately fix the problems. But by then, it was already a media narrative, and the local politicians went on attack and made it an issue, siding with some grossly exaggerated violations like missing paint and rusted pipes.

The whole point was to rid competition for some nearby animal attractions and take the land, which they finally did last year.

To be fair, the place was sort of its own joke, a corny aquatic attraction, a relic from last century. But they really did care about their animals, and the lack of glitz made it very cozy. They had a lot of wonderful animals and exhibits. Plus it was away from the city proper and Miami Beach, so it was peaceful and quiet.

There is always rescue work to do in Florida, I assume someone else is doing it. The manatee issue has always been the poor things don't know to avoid boat areas and just sit there floating when some careless boater zips over them and wounds them with the propeller blades. In that webm, I think you can see the poor creature's scars. So many animals ask for so little but a place to live in peace and be left alone. More and more, I am beginning to see the point of controlled depopulation. One just hopes that whoever ends up running the world at least takes care of it.
