My nephew (5 years) was also in the room so I was like "fuck it bro I guess I'll use this as a teachable moment and just tell them what it stands for". Obviously I gave a very age appropriate version, I just kept it clean and introduced the idea to them. My brother and his wife were furious at me for doing this. They are both doctors, which you think would make them more empathetic, but it doesn't. They really hate LGBT stuff, especially trans people (they laugh at and tell us stories about their trans patients), and are angry at me for telling their kids about this stuff. I get that at the end if the day they ain't my kids but I figure they're gonna learn someday, might as well be from a guy they already know and trust. Was I wrong?

Doctors have high incidence of sociopathy, they are together for economical or ethnic solidarity reasons. Sorry but it's easier for me to assume you are all asian because thats most likely. They are high performers based on striver norms so they definitely are control freaks and probably structurally rigid with teaching their kids. They may be just as mad that their kids are discussing sex early and have their own minds as they are with you making a social faux pas.
