Euphoria season 1 is the only good trans story Hollywood has produced to date, not half because Hunter Schaefer was invited in to the writers room to tell the story from a trans perspective.

The first episode was great, the hotel room scene with Cal Jacobs explaining the generation divide in queer romance, where Cal prophesies that that Jules’ choices are to to leave or forever be trapped in seedy motels like he is, leading inevitably through her struggles with Nate to taking Cal’s advice and getting on a train leaving Rue to her own prophesied fate was a masterpiece.

Season 3 on the other hand is soft core porn wrapped around an alt-right dog whistle masquerading as a rip-off of a Tarantino movie.

Except she wasn’t 14 she was 17 and dealing with the reality of being sexually active as a transsexual woman in a society that on the surface seems accepting and welcoming but in which the rules for queer romance and sexuality remain fundamentally different and stifling.

This comes to a head in episode 4 where Jules reveals to Rue that she fucked Nate’s dad by going up to Cal to cause a reaction. Cal then tracks Jules down to beg her not to out him, something Jules had no intention of doing, but making the “different rules” tangible and ironclad. It’s not that Jules is playing with fire, she IS the fire that gets played with.

This then gets brought home with her fated meeting with Nate behind the lake, out of sight of the public because nobody wants to be seen in public with a tranny. Nate, who is unable to deal with his own sexuality and attraction to Jules, exploits these “different rules” to assault and blackmail Jules who sees him for what he really is.

That’s brilliant storytelling. And your attitude to that is just part of the cishet demand that we remain abstinent our entire lives to avoid offending their delicate sensibilities which are really just a performance to mask their own sexual hang-ups.
