It's a real thing but it's a lot more rare than the accessory it's turned into. The same reasons those who identify as non-binary think that every gender is just an accessory. The same reasons a lot of young adults have trouble accepting the world is more sexist than they were led to believe and turn to non-binary to quantify and cope with it. Even within cultures that embraced a third or other gender, a lot of it is still wrapped up within sexism and spiritual belief systems used to compensate for a lack of deeper understanding of people and world. They're still just viewed as different, not normal or cisgendered. I know I fell into the same thing when I was younger as I tried to reconcile with my gender identity and it actually stunted my journey into accepting that I was in fact transgender/sexual. Sexism and gender constraints are bad, especially in the traditional systemic ways its used within our world to discriminate and create gender inequality, but it can still become a double edged sword for those who are gender dysphoric.
