I wouldn't consider myself autistic by any stretch of the imagination, and for a lot of this, I didn't really know what to fill out. For example, "compartimentalized masking". Does that just mean I know when not to talk about things and when to do so? I don't like the word "masking" because it seems overly pathologizing and inseparable from autism, but I do change my behavior a lot depending on who I am around (like most people do), and I always feel like I am pretending to be someone else entirely when interacting with others, so much so that I feel almost ashamed for betraying my true self after the fact. I have been accused of being hypervigilant before, both directly and indirectly. This mostly comes from back when I was in school and when I still had friends, I would oftentimes point things out to people and almost all of the time nobody else would observe it, unless it was something like a woman's ass, which I myself wouldn't even pay attention to unless someone pointed directly at it or it was very big. I also just feel like I don't really have any more than a passive interest in anything, so "hyperfixations" don't apply to me.

I used red to indicate interests or behavioural patterns that still apply to me and dark red to indicate ones that would have applied when I was younger. I used to exclusively wear sweatpants and cut the tags off of all of my clothes because I couldn't stand how it felt against my skin, alongside a couple of other minor things, but I grew out of it by the time I was 13 and also that's just common for most kids and not enough to be indicative of any sensory issues.

But yes sorry it's vague. What I'm trying to say is that people who have a more stereotypical expression of autism tends to like fantasy worlds and can endlessly talk about their systems, their lore, the worldbuilding, how one important guy conquered X or Y.

In more stereotypical female expressed autism as seen on like Tumblr or whatever, the fantasy genre is used as a vehicle for interesting characters. Take Astarion for example. His existence is unthinkable in the modern world. You need a fantasy setting to have fun little goblin men and gay vampires. These people endlessly talk and draw and ship these fantasy characters. They don't talk about the deep world lore. That's the difference.

When looking at the fantasy genre, we see once again, the books that focus on worlds and lore are more read by men. The ones that just use the world as a vehicle for unique characters are more read by women.

High IQ above 130 is a legit disability. I won't sperg too much but a lot of IQ is how much external stuff you internalise. If your brain is always open 100% to information then sure reading a book will make you pick up on a lot of info but it's virtually impossible to have high IQ and not have sensory issues. I made this chart because autism is not well represented at all. Especially women fall through the cracks a lot. Know all the train time tables? You're autistic. Know all the horses and how they work at 7? Well, you're just a girl.
Cohen's cohort refers to a guy called Cohen that studied autists and came to the conclusion that autism is an "ultra male brain". Because IMO he only studied train autists. He only looked at men and women that had a very stereotypical way of expressing their autism and socially they will come across as very masculine or androgynous for women. But when you take a look at fandom autism, you will see that a lot of autists are actually HYPERFEMININE. Much more than neurotypical women in a way. So yes. It's a little sperg out gripe I personally have with Cohen's theory and I want to kill the brainworms associated with an autism diagnosis for mtfs.

Back in the day before autisms were all rolled into one condition we used to have a lot of sub-types. One of these is "classical autism". It's really all about being a bit slow on language and social skills. As opposed to something like aspergers where you are super duper smart. Classical autism is basically renamed to train autist here and culturally dissected in how they're expressed. Aspergers would be expressed around the middle of the chart.

It's one of the vaguest entries and kind of for a reason since it's a bit of a cognitohazard. The way autism works is that most people have no clue whatsoever whats wrong with them. They will read about BPD, NPD, ADHD, trauma, personality types, astrology, sheep intestines, fucking ANYTHING that might fit them and what can help them become "normal" and "functional".

However, the autistic mind, for very complicated reasons that I won't get into now, tends to BECOME the symptoms and illnesses they read about. Normies also work this way, there is this common meme where normies act sick to get out of school and then actually feel a bit sick because they larped so well. But autists are extra susceptible to this. Look it up. It goes a bit further than that. Autists have more "somatic pain" too. They can talk themselves into having pain that's not actually there.

Little addendum but the same thing happens in BPD people. Borderline is characterized by being "a bit of everything". It has overlap with a shit ton of disorders, including hypochondriac. Autistic cis girl here. This chart is pretty inaccurate for other neurodivergent girls and me, who I grew up with. Most autistic women tend to have more normal mainstream interests. For me, it was always fashion, music, and psychology. The most niche it got was arcane; for other friends, it was similar to me, but with art and HTTYD.

Most of us love Pinterest and just have our interests on there. Autism isn't really our identity,y just one aspect of us.

Regarding IQ, most autistic women in my family have high-average to above-average IQs and are more socially adaptable than autistic men.

We actually care about our appearances and social norms, unlike men.

Also, AI could tell a male autistic brain from a female autistic brain 87% of the time, and that was due to brain activity and structure, which can be impacted as young as eight weeks when testosterone changes the brain.

I think most special interests are open to autists, it's all about finding those patterns and reducing uncertainty. Generally speaking people still engage in them in the same way: highly systematising or highly emphasizing.
How about the neurological stuff like sensory issues to textures or food? Did hypervigilance ever change? It usually does just a bit throughout your life depending on how many stressors someone's got.

Though, I have never seen female train autists ever go wildly expressive or sensitive to stimuli even after years of hanging out with fandom autists. The reverse is also something I've never seen.

Whoops, I meant empathising. Systematising and empathising are different approaches to special interests and how to categorise information.

Systematising is where you create systems out of information, endlessly ordering stuff around to make the systems around you predictable. Can be train time tables or even how Zelda timelines would work.
Empathising is trying to predict humans, characters and their behaviours so other people and society become more predictable.

Generally speaking, certain special interests just work better if you trend towards systematising, like trains. And other special interests just work better with emphatising, like psychology. This chart I made is loosely systematising because it's not concrete, it's still vibey, and it's about people and their behaviour. So it's right in the middle of systematising and empathising expressions of autism.

So two type of approaches can find themselves into the same topic. History can be both systematised and empathised for. It is perfectly possible to take a systematising approach to women's fashion or an empathising approach to trains. This is why it annoys me when someone goes "oh no my special interest is something male/fem-brained". NO, it is the WAY you interact with said interest that's important to how stereotypically expressed your autism is. I added specific special interests as vibe words so people understand the trend.
