They didn't have stonewall, fights over gay rights being huge national issues, etc. So when it comes to specific people or characters they usually judge them a little bit more as an individual as opposed to a preset archetype. From what I can gather, Japan's social conservatism is more along the lines of "I don't care, so long as it isn't my child that is gay" which you see in China as well. There are more recent efforts to actively combat lgbt rights from conservatives, which partially is from the US cultural war being exported overseas. They are a lot more biological deterministic though, there is far less of a gender and sex distinction.
