A similar thing occurred for dissociative identity disorder, since there is a large gap between the number of people who think it's cool to roleplay multiple personalities in their head versus the highly rare occurrence where somebody has to go through enough harrowing trauma to develop DID. The people with a true diagnosis have been hugely outnumbered in every mental health communityObviously this is never going to happen, but if I had my way, the non-dysphoric sect should be recategorized as exerting their freedom of gender expression rather than being trans.
