As a teacher, I can absolutely attest that school isn't what it used to be. I don't have or want kids, but I would never send my kids to a public school.

Shit has become completely meaningless, and that's not to say the kids don't need an education. Most of my students were dumb as fuck. No skills or common sense whatsoever. I don't blame them. There parents are phone addicts and schools just push them along regardless of whether they understand the material or not.

I'd estimate that about 80% of the work I received in the last year was just copied and pasted from AI. These poor kids can't even write a paragraph in the 11th grade.

I mean, the point of school is to prepare you for many different paths. A person should be well-rounded. An educated population is a necessity for a democracy. Our failure to properly educate our kids is one reason our country (US) is falling to shit.

I graduated third in my class in 2011 with a +4.0 GPA and had a blast taking AP classes, competing in Scholastic Bowl, and hanging out with my friends after school in the Latin room discussing politics and nerd shit. I legitimately looked up to many of my teachers. It's probably what made me become one.

Sounds like you had a bad time. How was your home life? Many kids just aren't in a position to give school their all. It's kind of hard to focus on Shakespeare when one parent is in jail, another is on drugs, and you have to work everyday after school just to keep a roof over your head. Most teachers get that. There are absolutely bad ones--this is the case in any profession that gives a person power over others--but by and large teachers just want share their love learning. My favorite thing to do was show obscure and artful films and discuss with my classes, for example. Admin are the ones who suck shit. Useless fucks.

I was at Walmart once buying a snack and this black lady thought I cut her off at the register so she started to record me yelling at me while I was buying my peanut m&ms with my head down fumbling in my purse trying to get my card because I was so nervous since I didn’t know what was going on. There were only like 3 guys in my hs class who read the required material for literature study out of 30 and all of those(myself included) would've been reading anyway so these classes added nothing but gruel to cheat/sleep/shit your way through for LITERALLY 90% of the students.

Also, PE (but admittedly high-school PE and not grade school) taught me the stretches that I do 20 years later. Sure, I try to copy stretches I like from others in the gym, but the ones I really remember and do every single week are the same ones from high school.
And I was a nerd that disliked PE. Only got into physical activities in university and beyond when I discovered partner dancing. For kids that were actually inclined towards physical activities, PE was probably the same "try it and find out if you like it" thing.

And do you think kids today are running around during recess/free time? They'll just pull out their phones and stand around.

That was me. I basically gave up my last year. Kids didn't care. I couldn't get most of them to even look at me when I tried to teach. Trying to get them off their phones just ended in me being cursed out and admin never did shit. I couldn't fail them (some of my colleagues gave 50s instead of zeroes for missing work). I eventually just gave them worksheets and spent my time making art on my computer (picrel).
