>>44225825gender dysphoria is a mental illness. notably, as with most mental illnesses, the objective of treatment is not to cure the illness but to alleviate and minimize the negative symptoms on an individual's life. the psychiatrist does not endeavor to completely eliminate obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder, or developmental disorders such as autism. a combination of therapies and medications are used to allow the patient to live without their condition inhibiting their daily functions or long term happiness. the most effective method of treatment for gender dysphoria is transition. this comes as both physical transition and social transition. socialization is partly contingent on gender. men receive social opportunities and belong to spaces that women typically do not, and vice versa. therefore as one socially transitions, it is natural that they will change. furthermore, in early life, it's common for gendered expectations to be thrust upon a person before they are able to transition. what emerges post-transition is not an aberration of who that person is, but a revealing of who they were. your friends and family who knew you pre-transition have an image of you in their mind which is partly informed by the gender they conceive of you as having been. it's normal for any person to change and reorient their priorities as they change. the best thing you can do is live naturally, don't overanalyze yourself. you can always change and be someone else. that's part of being human. everything about us is a habit that we can change

I would think of it more along the lines of a birth defect, as it appears to be, at least in some measure, related to genetics and/hormone exposure in the womb. However, that implies that there is a normal way to be born. That's simply not true. In a healthy society--ours definitely isn't--we would just be accepted as a normal variation within the human species. Medical transition may not even be necessary in such a society, similar to how some indigenous tribes treat trans people as a third, distinct group.

>>44226311It's kind of hard to say that given that we cannot separate our existence from the sociopathy of our society. I'm not saying that medical transition wouldn't exist in a better society, but it might not be all that necessary. Or at least, not for everyone.
